On the basis of this information, efferent autonomic neural activity is modulated finely, and the neurohumoral milieu of the heart and the blood vessels is adjusted on a second-to-second basis. The arterial baroreflex may be the most important of the cardiovascular control mechanisms, because the baroreflex, above all other reflex mechanisms, is the one whose speed is most adequate to respond rapidly to the abrupt transients of arterial pressure that occur in daily life. This volume presents the many experimental methods available for use in humans that have been recently developed. Some are ingenious and yield results that earlier might have been thought impossible to obtain from human volunteers. Development of these new methods has increased the scientific credibility of human baroreflex research, and this work discusses the advances made in these studies. It clearly describes the existing deficiencies in the understanding of baroreflex mechanisms, and suggests methods for future research in this developing field.

Fondly conceived as another Flexner report, it lacked a Flexner to produce it. The excitement of planning by varied committees was not always maintained through execution; communication, necessarily difficult, was strained by im portant changes in operating staff; questions were forgotten by the time answers became available; too much was undertaken with inadequate experi ence and funds (large though the support seemed) ; multiple purposes and distributed responsibility caused confusion and delay; the inevitable and evi table hazards of an extended undertaking exacted their full toll. As a result, the report is seriously late in appearing, and it lacks important portions of the anticipated perspectives along time and across disciplines. But high devotion and hard labor have been poured into the mold, and the finished creation is not without merit. The Survey did pioneer in formulating a study of a profession, and its struggles have supplied both guidance and warning to many followers. It did amass great chunks of new data, collate older information, and make interpretations of the whole which have been put to use long before this report was completed. And it did catalyze much other successful activity, especially in the area of education, by the American Physiological Society and its sister organizations and by agents of other in terests, from mathematics to medical schools.

  american physiological society citation: August and Marie Krogh Bodil Schmidt-Nielsen, 2013-05-27 August Krogh, the son of a brewer, studied zoology in Copenhagen and earned his doctoral degree under the physiologist Christian Bohr, the father of the world-renowned nuclear physicist Niels Bohr. Krogh's unusual ability to construct instruments and complex apparatuses and his intuitive understanding of physical principles made it possible for him to improve on Bohr's methods. His findings led him to challenge Christian Bohr's ideas about oxygen secretion, and when Bohr refused to accept his findings, Krogh unwillingly came into a painful conflict with his own mentor. Krogh's continued studies of how oxygen is supplied to the tissues led to his realization that the blood flow in the finest blood vessels, the capillaries, has to be regulated through a mechanism that opens and closes the capillaries according to the tissue's need for oxygen. This idea and his scientific proof were at the time so new and revolutionary that he was promptly (in 1920) awarded the Nobel Prize. His fame in Denmark and all over the world continued to grow until his death in 1949. His scientific discoveries extended from respiration, exercise physiology and capillary physiology into comparative osmoregulation, isotope studies, active transport of ions in plants and animals, and finally insect flight. Another dramatic story of Krogh's life began when he introduced insulin production in Denmark in 1922. This move saved his own wife's life as well as numerous other lives and helped make Denmark's Novo-Nordisk the largest producer of insulin in the world today. Krogh's wife, Marie, became a physician and a renowned scientist in her own right. Throughout their harmonious marriage and partnership, Marie played an important role in her husband's life both scientifically and personally. Written by the proud daughter of August and Marie Krogh, this biography is based on numerous letters, scientific papers, interviews, symposia, and other sources as well as the author's own knowledge of her parents. The intertwining of the scientific work and personal lives of these two remarkable people is beautifully illustrated in a well-rounded picture of their struggles and triumphs. These microgravity-associated findings collectively define the Spaceflight Associated Neuro-ocular Syndrome (SANS). In this book, the editors compare and contrast prior published work on SANS by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Space Medicine Operations Division with retrospective and prospective studies from other research groups. The book describes the possible mechanisms and potential etiologies for SANS, and provides an update and review on the clinical manifestations of SANS including: unilateral and bilateral optic disc edema, globe flattening, choroidal and retinal folds, hyperopic refractive error shifts, and focal areas of ischemic retina (i.e., cotton wool spots). The ocular imaging findings (e.g., retinal nerve fiber layer, optic disc, and choroidal changes on optical coherence tomography) of SANS is also described, including the intraorbital and intracranial findings on orbital ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging. The knowledge gaps for in-flight and terrestrial human research including potential countermeasures for future stud is also explored, including reports on the in-flight and terrestrial human and animal research being investigated by NASA and its partners to study SANS both prospectively and longitudinally and in preparation for future long duration manned missions to space including the moon, the asteroid belt, or Mars.
