  anatomy of a camel: The Biology of Camel-Spiders Fred Punzo, 2012-12-06 My initial interest in the Solifugae (camel-spiders) stems from an incident that occurred in the summer of 1986. I was studying the behavioral ecology of spider wasps of the genus Pepsis and their interactions with their large theraphosid (tarantula) spider hosts, in the Chihuahuan Desert near Big Bend National Park, Texas. I was monitoring a particular tarantula burrow one night when I noticed the resident female crawl up into the burrow entrance. Hoping to take some photographs of prey capture, I placed a cricket near the entrance and waited for the spider to pounce. Suddenly, out of the comer of my eye appeared a large, rapidly moving yellowish form which siezed the cricket and quickly ran off with it until it disappeared beneath a nearby mesquite bush. So suddenly and quickly had the sequence of events occurred, that I found myself momentarily startled. With the aid of a headlamp I soon located the intruder, a solifuge, who was already busy at work macerating the insect with its large chelicerae (jaws). When I attempted to nudge it with the edge of my forceps, it quickly moved to another location beneath the bush. When I repeated this maneuver, the solifuge dropped the cricket and lunged at the forceps, gripping them tightly in its jaws, refusing to release them until they were forcefully pulled away.

In spite of this growing importance, research on camel was limited until the early seventies to studies on topics such as anatomy, physiology, behaviour and to a lesser extent disease. However, since the early eighties the interest of the research on camels has been growing. Most advances have been made in reproductive physiology, veterinary and in the biochemistry of milk, while practical oriented research on improving camel productivity by developing marketable products targeting small and middle enterprises regrettably received little attention. This book attempts to fill this gap. The authors have profound knowledge on use of the camel as milk and meat animal. This knowledge is based on results of research work carried out in partnership with universities, camel farmers and pastoralists in Eastern African countries. The first part deals with chemical composition, technological properties, hygienic safety and quality control of camel milk. This is followed by the presentation of processing methods for different dairy products which should allow smallholder producers to process milk on farm or in centralised small scale dairy unit. In the second part special knowledge gained in slaughtering, deboning and processing of camels on-site over several years of long-term stays on the Ol Maisor Farm in Kenya is presented. During the development of camel meat products the authors set a great value on the keeping quality of the products as well as creating a wide range of product groups with low and high cost for the local market and a good shelf life. The book presents background information and recipes on the manufacture of camel milk and meat products and it is intended as a practical guide to professionals, government bodies and development agencies interested in building up small scale processing units for camel meat and milk products. It is hoped that it may also serve as a reference for extension personal working with camel herders, food scientists and students. The book is concerned entirely with the one-humped camel (Camelus dromedarius). The term camel should, therefore, be taken to refer to this species unless specifically stated otherwise.

The cast of characters in this story is larger than life and includes U.S. Army and Navy officers, explorers, writers, politicians, and diplomats. The most famous person involved was Jefferson Davis, a U.S. Senator from Mississippi who went on to become Secretary of War and the Confederacy's only president. The project also utilized Haji Ali (also known as Hi Jolly), the U.S. Army's first Muslim employee, and it even had a small effect on the Civil War. One of the camels, Doug, was used by the Confederates at Vicksburg, and locals despised the Red Ghost, a feral camel that terrorized rural Arizona. The most important result of this historical footnote probably has no resonance in American history, and in fact, the name United States Camel Corps was never formalized, but it seems to be what historians call a retronym, a name given after a phenomenon has receded into the past. How long the name of Camel Corps has been in existence is unknown, but it has been used in literature for close to a century. What the troopers themselves called the unit remains unknown. However, the unit was extraordinarily important to Mexico, thanks to a man named Elias, one of the Syrian-Arab cameleers.
