ant problem in winter: Bluebirds and Their Survival Wayne H. Davis, Philippe Roca, 2021-05-11 Bring more bluebirds into your life with this “lavishly illustrated [and] easy-to-read” how-to book (Manchester Enterprise). Bluebird expert Wayne H. Davis tells how to attract and care for this beautiful and gentle bird and offers solutions to the most common bluebird problems. Since bluebirds are almost entirely dependent on people for providing nesting sites, the book contains plans for erecting a structure that will attract bluebirds to a safe habitat. Instructions for building and maintaining a “bluebirds trail,” complete with drawings of various bluebirds houses and guards against predators, are also included. Davis shares his plans for his specially designed Kentucky Bluebird Box?a unique bird house attractive to the Eastern Bluebird but unsuitable for the bluebird’s rivals?as well a variety of other plans for using materials as inexpensive as milk cartons and scavenged pipes. A chapter by professional photographer Philippe Roca offers tips on photographing bluebirds. Whether you’re a beginning birder or an expert, Davis will help ensure your success in attracting and raising bluebirds. “To ensure the survival of bluebirds (a North American native threatened by sparrows and starlings), the authors instruct on how to build habitats, distribute winter feed, and foil enemies, both feathered and furred. Scientific research is cited to back the authors’ claims on the best diet, nesting locations, and shelters. Finally offered are photography lessons and specific birdhouse designs, from simple milk jugs to a sparrow-inhibiting nest box. Bird-watchers, earnest and casual, will benefit from this guide.” —Booklist |
ant problem in winter: Ant Encounters Deborah M. Gordon, 2010-03-22 How do ant colonies get anything done, when no one is in charge? An ant colony operates without a central control or hierarchy, and no ant directs another. Instead, ants decide what to do based on the rate, rhythm, and pattern of individual encounters and interactions--resulting in a dynamic network that coordinates the functions of the colony. Ant Encounters provides a revealing and accessible look into ant behavior from this complex systems perspective. Focusing on the moment-to-moment behavior of ant colonies, Deborah Gordon investigates the role of interaction networks in regulating colony behavior and relations among ant colonies. She shows how ant behavior within and between colonies arises from local interactions of individuals, and how interaction networks develop as a colony grows older and larger. The more rapidly ants react to their encounters, the more sensitively the entire colony responds to changing conditions. Gordon explores whether such reactive networks help a colony to survive and reproduce, how natural selection shapes colony networks, and how these structures compare to other analogous complex systems. Ant Encounters sheds light on the organizational behavior, ecology, and evolution of these diverse and ubiquitous social insects. |

ant problem in winter: The Complex World of Ants Vonnie D.C. Shields, 2018-10-24 Ants play important roles in natural ecosystems. These eusocial insects are omnivorous feeders and live in a wide variety of habitats. They belong to the order Hymenoptera, and family Formicidae. There are more than 8800 described species that occur throughout the world. They have large heads, segmented antennae, and powerful jaws and undergo complete metamorphosis. In general, ants live typically in structured nest communities, forming nest sites in close proximity to moisture and food, underground, in ground-level mounds, or in trees. Among ant species, there is a wide range of interesting behaviors displayed. Many species are mutualistic, where they develop interactions with other insects and/or plants. Other species display parasitic relationships among each other. Still other species exhibit predatory behaviors. This book contains contributions written by experts in their respective fields and targets a wide audience. It is highly recommended as a valuable resource for general biologists, entomologists, ecologists, zoologists, and students and teachers in training in this subject matter. |

ant problem in winter: Ant Colony Optimization and Swarm Intelligence Marco Dorigo, Mauro Birattari, Christian Blum, Maurice Clerc, Thomas Stützle, Alan Winfield, 2008-09-10 The series of biannual international conferences “ANTS – International C- ference on Ant Colony Optimization and Swarm Intelligence”, now in its sixth edition, was started ten years ago, with the organization of ANTS’98. As some readers might recall, the ?rst edition of ANTS was titled “ANTS’98 – From Ant Colonies to Arti?cial Ants: First International Workshop on Ant Colony Op- mization. ” In fact, at that time the focus was mainly on ant colony optimization (ACO), the ?rst swarm intelligence algorithm to go beyond a pure scienti?c interest and to enter the realm of real-world applications. Interestingly, in the ten years after the ?rst edition there has been a gr- ing interest not only for ACO, but for a number of other studies that belong more generally to the area of swarmintelligence. The rapid growth of the swarm intelligence ?eld is attested by a number of indicators. First, the number of s- missions and participants to the ANTS conferences has steadily increased over the years. Second, a number of international conferences in computational - telligence and related disciplines organize workshops on subjects such as swarm intelligence, ant algorithms, ant colony optimization, and particle swarm op- mization. Third, IEEE startedorganizing,in 2003,the IEEE SwarmIntelligence Symposium (in order to maintain unity in this growing ?eld, we are currently establishingacooperationagreementbetweenIEEE SISandANTSsoastohave 1 IEEE SIS in odd years and ANTS in even years). ant problem in winter: The Keys to a Happy and Fulfilling Life as a Couple Ron Cherry, 2022-08-01 YouaEUR(tm)re holding in your hands now, Solutions to all of your relationship challenges for now and the future. One of the finest book about love and forgiveness we have ever read, this inspiring book guides us how to reach the full potential to a lasting commitment of joy, peace, forgiveness, and endless love while fulfilling yourself daily. The best-loved teaching and forgiveness show us how we can transform all life difficulties of the couple into a valuable opportunity for building a healthy relationship we have been looking for a long time. When weaEUR(tm)re talking about love or forgiveness, is there really Western or Eastern love? Does not everyone seek happiness, joy, peace, unconditional love, financial security? Do we not seek a wise, intelligent, and captivating man or woman to build forgiveness and love based on mutual respect, understanding, responsibility, integrity and humility, faithfulness, effective communication, family, and community spirit? Human being is perfectly imperfect, but we can be perfected in love, forgiveness, and kindness. Each of us has already been hurt, betrayed, and despised by our wife or our husband, and would like to hear the words: aEURoeI apologize sincerely,aEUR aEURoeI am sorry for everything that has happened between us,aEUR aEURoeI truly regret everything,aEUR aEURoeI love you tremendously,aEUR aEURoeYou are adorable,aEUR aEURoeWe will get there. I trust you,aEUR aEURoeI promise to be faithful, supportive, and loyal.aEUR ShouldnaEUR(tm)t you also think about forgiving, loving, having patience for your husband and for your wife who was yesterday the prince charming or the woman of your dreams who no longer has any value in your eyes today? YouaEUR(tm)re saying, aEURoeHeaEUR(tm)s my enemy.aEUR ArenaEUR(tm)t you someone elseaEUR(tm)s enemy? Our greatest enemy, isnaEUR(tm)t that ourselves? When you remind your husband of things that have happened in the last twenty years, or explain to your friends and colleagues the private life of your relationship or the mistakes of either one of you, arenaEUR(tm)t you destroying the relationship by thinking youaEUR(tm)re hurting your husband or wife? Teeth sometimes bite the tongue, but they remain together. Let us be merciful and slow to anger, rich in kindness and fidelity. Love is patient; it is full of greatness and sacrifice. Should we not be a source of love in order to know the height, depth, length, and width of love? Love is strong as death. Death, life, and environmental difficulties can never overcome immeasurable love. At the point where we have reached, let us walk with the same step, eye to eye, hand in hand, with the same vision. We have a lot more in common than you think. I only have a minute. Sixty seconds in it. Forced upon me, I did not choose it, but I know that I must use it. Give account if I abuse it. Suffer, if I lose it. Only a tiny little minute, But eternity is in it. (Rep. Elijah Cummings) DonaEUR(tm)t ever make decisions based on fear. Make decisions based on hope and possibility. Make decisions based on what should happen, not what shouldnaEUR(tm)t. (Michelle Obama) To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner was you. (Lewis B. ant problem in winter: Games, Sports, and Play Thomas Hurka, 2019-09-05 This volume presents new philosophical essays on a topic that's been neglected in most recent philosophy: games, sports, and play. Some contributions address conceptual questions about what games and sports have in common and that distinguishes them from other activities; here many take their start from Bernard Suits's celebrated analysis of game-playing in his book The Grasshopper and either elaborate it or propose an alternative to it. Other essays discuss normative issues that arise within games and sports, such as about fairness, for example in the treatment of male and female athletes. Yet others consider broader evaluative questions about the value of games and sports, which some see as enabling the display of distinctive excellences. Games, Sports, and Play includes a posthumous essay by Suits defending his claim, in The Grasshopper, that life in utopia would consist primarily in playing games. The volume's chapters approach the topic of games, sports, and play from different angles but always in the belief that there is rich terrain here for philosophical investigation. |
ant problem in winter: Ant Architecture Walter R. Tschinkel, 2021-06-22 An unprecedented look at the complex and beautiful world of underground ant architecture Walter Tschinkel has spent much of his career investigating the hidden subterranean realm of ant nests. This wonderfully illustrated book takes you inside an unseen world where thousands of ants build intricate homes in the soil beneath our feet. Tschinkel describes the ingenious methods he has devised to study ant nests, showing how he fills a nest with plaster, molten metal, or wax and painstakingly excavates the cast. He guides you through living ant nests chamber by chamber, revealing how nests are created and how colonies function. How does nest architecture vary across species? Do ants have architectural plans? How do nests affect our environment? As he delves into these and other questions, Tschinkel provides a one-of-a-kind natural history of the planet's most successful creatures and a compelling firsthand account of a life of scientific discovery. Offering a unique look at how simple methods can lead to pioneering science, Ant Architecture addresses the unsolved mysteries of underground ant nests while charting new directions for tomorrow’s research, and reflects on the role of beauty in nature and the joys of shoestring science. |

ant problem in winter: Ants of Florida Mark Deyrup, 2016-10-14 Ants are familiar to every naturalist, ecologist, entomologist, and pest control operator. The identification of the 233 species of Florida ants is technically difficult, and information on Florida ants is dispersed among hundreds of technical journal articles. This book uses detailed and beautiful scientific drawings for convenient identification. To most Florida biologists ants are currently the most inaccessible group of conspicuous and intrusive insects. This book solves the twin problems of ant identification and the extraordinary fragmentation of natural history information about Florida ants. |
