  bachelors of science in mathematics: Degrees in Science and Mathematics Irene Harwarth, 1993 This compilation of recent statistical information on science and mathematics degrees in the United States also describes the larger environment of employment of individuals with science and mathematics degrees and provides some information on non-U.S. citizens receiving degrees in these areas. Data are derived from four survey programs of the National Center for Education Statistics, as well as from other government agencies. On the national level, bachelor's degrees in science and mathematics declined by close to 16 percent between 1985-86 and 1989-90, in contrast to an increase of 6 percent in bachelor's degrees overall. Decreases were found for every state. In contrast, master's degrees in science increased in 37 states and doctoral degrees in science increased in 44 states in the same period. On the national level, master's degrees in science and mathematics rose by 9 percent and doctor's degrees in these field rose by 25 percent. Increases were noted for computer sciences, engineering, and health sciences, but decreases were seen for the agricultural sciences, life sciences, and physical sciences. Nonresident aliens were awarded over 50 of all doctor's degrees in engineering and mathematics in 1989-90, and master's and doctor's degrees in these field increased at a faster rate for nonresident aliens than for U.S. students.
