baxter peritoneal dialysis manual: Automated Peritoneal Dialysis Claudio Ronco, 1999-01-01 While continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) has been the standard peritoneal procedure since the seventies, different schedules of automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) have emerged during the eighties. Today, APD is considered a valuable tool in the management of ESRD patients, together with CAPD and hemodialysis. However, despite its frequent use, APD has not yet been well assessed, and most pathophysiological and clinical studies on PD refer to CAPD. In this book, major experts in the field therefore discuss and evaluate the insights gained on APD up to now, presenting a comprehensive review of all experimental, technical and clinical aspects related to the various treatments grouped under the definition of APD. The recent developments presented are divided into four sections: membrane permeability, transport mechanisms and kinetic modeling applied to APD; prescription and adequacy of different APD treatment schedules; dialysis machines and solutions for APD, and, lastly, different clinical aspects such as the possibility to maintain APD program and residual renal function. Physicians involved in ESRD care, renal fellows and scientists both in the academic world and in the hospital setting will undoubtedly profit from this timely publication.
baxter peritoneal dialysis manual: Manual of Peritoneal Dialysis G.A. Coles, 2012-12-06 Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is in widespread use for the treatment of acute and chronic renal failure. A considerable amount of knowledge about the various procedures and problems associated with this form of treatment has accumulated over recent years, particularly since the introduction of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). However to date the information regarding the more technical or practical aspects of PD has been largely scattered in various books and journals. There appears to be no straightforward text concerned with these points suitable for recommending to junior doctors or nurses dealing with patients receiving this therapy. Though in-house-training is of considerable value it takes time and I have noticed that on a number of occasions in our own unit, technical problems with PD have not been dealt with quickly because of lack of knowledge in the staff on duty. There thus appeared to me to be a need for a short book giving firm advice on how to perform the various procedures and how to deal with problems as they arose. This manual is an attempt to fulfil that aim. Initially it was tried and tested on the renal unit in the Cardiff Royal Infirmary for 3 years. Prior to publishing it has been extensively revised and updated.
baxter peritoneal dialysis manual: Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis G.R. Catto, 2012-12-06 For more than a generation haemodialysis has been the principal method of treating patients with both acute and chronic renal failure. Initially, developments and improvements in the system were highly technical and relevant to only a relatively small number of specialists in nephrology. More recently, as advances in therapy have dem onstrated the value of haemofiltration in the intensive therapy unit and haemoperfusion for certain types of poisoning, the basic principles of haemodialysis have been perceived as important in many areas of clinical practice. In this volume, the potential advantages of bicarbonate haemo dialysis are objectively assessed, the technical and clinical aspects of both haemofiltration and haemoperfusion discussed and the con tinuing problems associated with such extra corporeal circuits analysed. All the chapters have been written by recognized experts in their field. The increasing availability of highly technical facilities for appropriately selected patients should ensure that the information contained in the book is relevant not only to nephrologists but to all practising clinicians. ABOUT THE EDITOR Dr Graeme R. D. Catto is Professor in Medicine and Therapeutics at the University of Aberdeen and Honorary Consultant Phy sician/Nephrologist to the Grampian Health Board. His current inter est in transplant immunology was stimulated as a Harkness Fellow at Harvard Medical School and the Peter Bent Brighton Hospital, Boston, USA. He is a member of many medical societies including the Association of Physicians of Great Britain and Ireland, the Renal Association and the Transplantation Society.
baxter peritoneal dialysis manual: Remote Patient Management in Peritoneal Dialysis C. Ronco, C. Crepaldi, M.H. Rosner, 2019-04-08 Telemedicine and remote patient monitoring are innovative tools to provide remote transmission, interpretation, and storage of data for review by the care team. These tools allow for accurate home monitoring of patients enabling the team to improve care through prevention and early identification of problems. This book is structured into four main parts. The first describes the evolution of peritoneal dialysis and related technology. The second part summarizes current unmet clinical needs reported by patients and care teams, the need for innovation in the field, and the technical and clinical issues involved with the modern management of peritoneal dialysis. The third section presents the operational characteristics of the new information communication technology system and, in detail, the features of the Sharesource platform. Finally, a series of field experiences by expert users are reported to describe the benefits and the potential applications of remote patient monitoring in the future. Telemedicine and remote patient monitoring have proven to be useful in the care of patients on peritoneal dialysis. The scope of this publication, therefore, is to present the experiences of clinical key opinion leaders who have been using the application.
baxter peritoneal dialysis manual: Peritoneal Dialysis Manual R.T. Krediet, D.G. Struijk, S. van Esch, 2018-04-23 Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a valid renal replacement therapy when incorporated in an overall integrated care programme for end-stage renal disease patients. Despite this fact, PD has not yet been established as a true long-term dialysis modality. This practical handbook offers sensible advice as well as detailed information on virtually all clinical and pathophysiological aspects of PD in a readily accessible format and explains the complexities of PD in a clear but still scientific and comprehensive way. Due to its handy size it fits in a white coat pocket of a nephrologist visiting a PD patient during rounds or in the outpatient ambulatory setting. Nephrologists, residents in nephrology and internal medicine, and all other health care workers – nurses, pharmacists, dieticians, intensivists, and medical students – involved with patients suffering from end-stage renal disease will find this book very helpful for understanding the scientific background of PD.

baxter peritoneal dialysis manual: Nolph and Gokal's Textbook of Peritoneal Dialysis Ramesh Khanna, Raymond T. Krediet, 2009-05-28 Nolph and Gokal's Text Book of Peritoneal Dialysis, Third Edition, covers advances made in the field for the past 30 years. During the past two decades, the time during which this therapy has been increasingly utilized, this text has continued to be recognized as the major source of the discipline's base knowledge. The evolution of this text to its newest edition parallels the growth of peritoneal dialysis from Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis in the eighties to the current therapy that encompasses manual and automated therapies with full emphasis on adequacy of dialysis dose. Peritoneal dialysis represents an intracorporeal technique for blood purification. This unique dialysis system represents one of many human attempts to manipulate nature for sustenance of life. The past few years of advances have focused on further improvement of the technique. Areas that have fueled the interest of researchers include: (1) Physiology of high transporters (and the role of genetics and inflammation); (2) Continued debate over the most appropriate adequacy indices (small solute clearances, large solute clearances, clinical assessment etc.); (3) Understanding, preventing and treating the MIA syndrome in PD patients ( including the roles of leptin, and adiponectin); (4) Pathogenesis and newer management strategies of vascular calcification; (5) Continued improvements in infectious complications including peritonitis; (6) Further improvements in catheter technology; (7) Automated techniques; (8) Explaining and correcting PD underutilization; (9) Rationale and applications of newer dialysis solutions; (10) New understanding and approaches to management of osteodystrophy; (11) Refinements in anemia management including new insights in iron metabolism in PD patients; (12) Further definition of indications for PD; (13) The ideal time to initiate dialysis. Newer insight into host defense mechanisms have also made the past decade of advances in the field more meaningful for clinicians. This text also covers the knowledge gained from animal models of peritoneal dialysis. Nolph and Gokal's Textbook of Peritoneal Dialysis, Third Edition is a compilation of the latest knowledge in the field. It cites and describes in great detail, the new discoveries and the evolution of understanding the subject of these discoveries.

baxter peritoneal dialysis manual: Expanded Hemodialysis C. Ronco, 2017-09-14 Despite constant significant advances, cardiovascular as well as more general outcomes of hemodialysis treatment remain unsatisfactory. The introduction of innovative 'high retention onset' membranes has led to the development of a new treatment modality called 'expanded hemodialysis' (HDx), which is the focus of this book. This new therapy is likely to benefit end-stage kidney disease patients, thanks to enhanced removal of molecules retained by current dialysis techniques. HDx is simple to set up and application does not require special hardware or specific nursing skills. This book contains emerging evidence and fascinating new hypotheses on HDx. It is highly recommended for all physicians and healthcare professionals who are caring for dialysis patients and are seeking innovation and improved care solutions. It will also be of considerable interest to students and fellows.
baxter peritoneal dialysis manual: Pediatric Dialysis Bradley A.   baxter peritoneal dialysis manual: High-Performance Membrane Dialyzers A. Saito, H. Kawanishi, A. C. Yamashita, 2011 A comprehensive summary of high-flux dialyzers and their properties Dialyzers today are developed with high permeability and biocompatibility in mind, even though the definition of these so- called high-flux dialyzers remains controversial. In the Japanese reimbursement system, dialyzers are divided into five types, ranging from I to V, in accordance with their clearance for beta2- microglobulin (beta2-MG). Classes IV and V (beta2-MG clearance greater or equal to 50 and 70 ml/min, respectively, at a blood flow rate of 200 ml/min) are the most common ones, used in more than 90% of Japanese dialysis patients. Membranes used in types IV and V dialyzers are called high-performance membranes (HPMs) and are characterized by an exceptionally high flux rate, permeability and biocompatibility. The book at hand covers all aspects of these HPM dialyzers, including their definitions and characteristics, clinical experiences and basic investigations. Moreover, historical HPMs and several membranes with special characteristics that are not categorized into classes IV or V are discussed. Providing a summary of commercially available HPM dialyzers, this publication not only serves as a textbook for those interested in state-of the-art dialysis treatment, but is also a concise database of the products available.

baxter peritoneal dialysis manual: The Patient Satisfaction Questionnaire Short-form (PSQ-18) Grant N. Marshall, Ron D. Hays, Rand Corporation, 1994 This article reports on the development and psychometric properties of a short-form version of the 50-item Patient Satisfaction Questionnaire III (PSQ-III). The short-form instrument, the PSQ-18, contains 18 items tapping each of the seven dimensions of satisfaction with medical care measured by the PSQ-III: general satisfaction, technical quality, interpersonal manner, communication, financial aspects, time spent with doctor, and accessibility and convenience. PSQ-18 subscale scores are substantially correlated with their full-scale counterparts and possess generally adequate internal consistency reliability. Moreover, both the magnitude of the correlation coefficients and the overall pattern of correlations among PSQ-18 subscales are highly similar to those observed for the PSQ-III. These preliminary analyses support the use of the PSQ-18 in situations where the need for brevity precludes administration of the full-length PSQ-III.
