Thus she was able to exploit her trading partnership with the coast Indians and cement a lucrative sea-borne commerce with the Far East. The arrival overland of the Nor'westers and other fur-trading groups further strengthened Britain's financial and political interests in the area -- ending forever the isolation of Northwest America, and 'changing beyond measure the culture of its Indian peoples.' The issues of submarine groundwater discharge and its opposite phenomenon of seawater invasion are discussed in this book from the geophysical, geochemical, biological, and engineering perspectives. This is where land hydrogeology and marine hydrogeology overlap. Submarine groundwater discharge is a rapidly developing research field. The SCOR and LOICZ of the IGBP have recently established a working group for this research. IASPO and IAHS under IUGG also recently formed a new joint committee Seawater/Groundwater Interactions to collaborate with oceanographers and hydrologists. The other articles introduce frontier research topics in more typical land and marine environments, such as fluid flow in karst aquifers, the biological aspects of fluids in sedimentary basins and submarine sedimentary formations, respectively, and vigorous fluid flow in subsea formations and their significance in global tectonics. Geochemical characteristics of hydrothermal activities at a number of active continental margins are also reviewed, and multidisciplinary geophysical constraints of the permeability of young igneous oceanic crust are summarized. A variety of driving mechanisms for fluid flow is discussed in land and subsea formations; terrestrial hydraulic gradient, buoyancy driven free convection, tidally induced flow, flow induced by tectonic strain, flow due to sediment compaction.

Documentation of serial killing exists as early as the Roman Empire with Julia Agrippina, who serially poisoned husbands and family members to attain power. Among commoners, ancient tales of vampires, werewolves, and other grisly killings may be the human race's first stories about serial killers. Because the murders were so gruesome, often occurred in isolated areas and included dismemberment, disfiguration, or obvious signs of sexual assault and torture, it was thought that no human could have committed such heinous crimes. These vicious acts were attributed to supernatural, not-completely-human entities. Serial killing has been discovered in many cultures around the world. Humans are capable of such dreadful crimes, and also of committing them repeatedly. Most scholars, psychologists, and law enforcement officers concentrate on researching male serial killers - especially the ones they term sexual predators, like Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, and Jeffrey Dahmer. It's been discovered, however, that female serial killers are infinitely more successful and dangerous than their male counterparts. Female serial killers are less flashy, less flamboyant, more patient, and tend to kill in ways that are rarely detected as murder. Also, female serial killers tend to murder people known to them, rather than the strangers that male sexual predators seek out. Black Widow serial killers usually murder husbands, lovers, boyfriends, children, and even boarders for insurance proceeds, inheritance money, or Social Security checks. Medeas kill their children to punish their ex-husbands or to otherwise manipulate the men in their lives, as did the Greek princess Medea, who killed her children to make her husband suffer after he left her to marry a younger woman. Angels of Death kill those who are dependent upon their care - in hospitals, nursing homes, or in private care - often murdering them with drugs or in ways that are undetected by medical examination. The most dangerous category of female serial killers are the women who viciously abuse, torture, and often kill their own children, children in their care, or others who are entirely dependent upon them. Posing as ideal mothers and self-less caregivers, these female serial killers practice Munchausen's by Proxy (MBP), an incurable personality disorder where the woman intentionally and repeatedly sickens, injures, tortures, abuses, and kills her victims in order to get attention, respect, admiration, and love for herself. Often called Munchers by those in law enforcement and the medical establishment who eventually discover the terrible truth behind the illnesses, injuries, and deaths of the children and others in their care, women who practice Munchausen's by Proxy are the most dangerous of all serial killers because they operate openly, virtually flaunting their crimes while appearing, at the same time, to be completely and unquestionably innocent. They are the serial killers next door.
