derm complete science diet: Androgenetic Alopecia From A to Z Konstantinos Anastassakis, 2022-10-26 This second of three related volumes, designed as a reference tool for the understanding and treatment of Androgenetic Alopecia and Female Pattern Hair Loss (AGA/FPHL), is structured in 4 sections: 63 dedicated chapters covering every aspect of medical (non-surgical, non-invasive) and nutritional treatment options and clinical effects. FDA-approved hair growth drugs, every frequently prescribed off-label or experimental drug, hormones, cosmeceuticals, and popular fraudulent controversial products are all presented in 26 chapters, with figures, tables, algorithms, and thousands of fully updated and balanced literature citations. Filling a gap in the latest literature, Androgenetic Alopecia From A to Z: Drugs, Herbs, Nutrition, and Supplements includes a thorough review of lifestyle and nutritional factors specifically affecting AGA/FPHL, including excessive caloric intake, high-fat diets, caloric deprivation, alcohol abuse, and smoking. The intricate effects of nutrition on hair loss, one of the most neglected and misunderstood fields in Dermatology, are presented as well, with a plethora of clinically valuable information: why food supplements are so popular, the regulatory minefield of supplements, and the life-threatening perils of nutritional supplementation, are all reviewed extensively. Each vitamin, major mineral, and trace element implicated in follicular physiology is reviewed in altogether 24 dedicated chapters according to their specific effects on the hair follicle, food sources, dietary recommendations, and the impact of deficiency or excess. This volume includes a comprehensive chapter on the understanding of Complementary-Alternative Medicine (CAM). CAM is an umbrella term for methods that lie outside evidence-based medicine and a part of a societal trend towards the rejection of science as a method of determining facts. The pitfalls and challenges in understanding botanicals with reported hair growth properties, from publication bias to lack of standardization, as well as their unpredictable pharmacological and physiological effects, are all explained in detail. Finally, all popular botanical products reported to possess hair growth properties are appraised in 14 dedicated chapters, each including a detailed review of the general effects, the suggested biochemical mechanisms, claimed actions on the hair follicle, all available studies, and hundreds of literature citations. This carefully crafted book will be an invaluable reference tool for dermatologists and all clinical practitioners dealing with Androgenetic Alopecia and Female Pattern Hair Loss and will help them answer challenging patient questions, debunk myths on hair growth drugs, and supplements and navigate patients towards effective and safe treatment schemes. |

derm complete science diet: Diet & Nutrition Rudolph Ballentine, 1978 Abstract: Designed for the serious student whether he is lay or professional, this book attempts to provide a holistic and comprehensive overview of the complex nutrition field. Bringing together some of the insights of the East with the scientific research of the West, the ecology, biochemistry, physiology, and pharmacology of nutrition are examined in a systematic fashion before proceeding to the relationship between nutrition and the mind. The traditional system of medicine in India is called Ayurveda. Ayurvedic nutrition is based on the concept that for each food there is an essence or energy state of quality that can be identified and formulated. The importance of the mind and the effect of one's mental and emotional habits on nutritional requirements is where the Eastern perspective on medicine and nutrition serves to counterbalance the Western extreme. Bringing together diverse data from the Western science of nutrition and the perennial wisdom of Eastern philosophy may permit their integration into one complete vision of man and his diet. |

derm complete science diet: Honey Bees, Beekeeping and Bee Products Aijaz Ahmad Wachkoo, Gulzar Ahmad Nayik, Jalal Uddin, Mohammad Javed Ansari, 2024-03-14 Honey bees are social insects; they live together in large, well-organized family groups comprising three castes: queen (fertile female), workers (sterile females) and drones (males). During honey flow season, there is a considerable increase in the foraging activity of the workers and in the rate of egg laying by the queen. Sex determination in honey bees involves a multi-allelic locus, such that homozygotes develop as males and heterozygotes as females, whereas diet quality influences the caste determination in honey bees. Like all living organisms, honey bees can be infested with diseases and pests. Some of these are more deleterious to bee colonies than others, but it is important for the beekeeper to be able to recognize conditions that might be disease or pest-related and respond accordingly so as to improve the quality of honey and honey bee by-products. The best-known primary products of beekeeping are honey and wax, but pollen, propolis, royal jelly, venom, queens, bees and their larvae are also marketable primary bee products. The purpose of this book is to make available information on bee biology and beekeeping as well as to provide comprehensive information on manufacturing, processing and marketing of value-added bee products. This book has been designed as a useful tool for the many diverse professionals who characterize and market honey bee products, including beekeepers, non-beekeepers, small entrepreneurs, extension officers and those involved in small business development. This edited book will be the first of its kind to contain comprehensive information on both bees and bee products. Key Features: Contains comprehensive information on beekeeping. Discusses the recent advances in beekeeping. Sheds light on bee colony integration and organization. Contains brief information on honey bee products. |
