evergreen health physical therapy kirkland: Neurohospitalist Medicine S. Andrew Josephson, W. David Freeman, David J. Likosky, 2011-09-29 Over the past decade, the hospitalist model has become a dominant system for the delivery of inpatient care. Forces such as national mandates to improve safety and quality, and intense pressure to safely reduce length of hospital stays, are now exerting pressure on neurologists. To meet these challenges, a new neurohospitalist model is emerging. This is the first authoritative text to detail the advances and strategies for treating neurologic disease in a hospital setting. It includes chapters on specific acute neurologic diseases including stroke, epilepsy, neuromuscular disease and traumatic brain injury and also addresses common reasons for neurologic consultation in the hospital including encephalopathy, electrolyte disturbances and neurologic complications of pregnancy. Ethical and structural issues commonly encountered in neurologic inpatients are also addressed. This will be a key resource for any clinician or trainee caring for neurologic patients in the hospital including practising neurologists, internists and trainees across multiple subspecialities.

evergreen health physical therapy kirkland: The Inevitable Katie Engelhart, 2021-03-02 “A remarkably nuanced, empathetic, and well-crafted work of journalism, [The Inevitable] explores what might be called the right-to-die underground, a world of people who wonder why a medical system that can do so much to try to extend their lives can do so little to help them end those lives in a peaceful and painless way.”—Brooke Jarvis, The New Yorker More states and countries are passing right-to-die laws that allow the sick and suffering to end their lives at pre-planned moments, with the help of physicians. But even where these laws exist, they leave many people behind. The Inevitable moves beyond margins of the law to the people who are meticulously planning their final hours—far from medical offices, legislative chambers, hospital ethics committees, and polite conversation. It also shines a light on the people who help them: loved ones and, sometimes, clandestine groups on the Internet that together form the “euthanasia underground.” Katie Engelhart, a veteran journalist, focuses on six people representing different aspects of the right to die debate. Two are doctors: a California physician who runs a boutique assisted death clinic and has written more lethal prescriptions than anyone else in the U.S.; an Australian named Philip Nitschke who lost his medical license for teaching people how to end their lives painlessly and peacefully at “DIY Death” workshops. The other four chapters belong to people who said they wanted to die because they were suffering unbearably—of old age, chronic illness, dementia, and mental anguish—and saw suicide as their only option. Spanning North America, Europe, and Australia, The Inevitable offers a deeply reported and fearless look at a morally tangled subject. It introduces readers to ordinary people who are fighting to find dignity and authenticity in the final hours of their lives.

evergreen health physical therapy kirkland: Why Can't Johnny Just Quit? Kyle Oh, Kyle Oh M D, 2014-06-20 Amazon Best Seller A fascinating, realistic study of pain management and addiction that offers hope to patients and their families. Kirkus Reviews. Currently, there is no book on addiction that is talking about how to prevent addiction. My book does! It may seem strange that no one else is talking about how to prevent addiction. It's because the current theory on addiction is that it is a maladjusted coping mechanism. Those who suffer from emotional pain may abuse drugs to mask their pain. I disagree. Whether you can get addicted to any drug depends on your genetic predisposition to that drug. Every drug has a different genetic basis. A person who becomes a lot more talkative and excited after the first few drinks is the person who has the alcohol gene. The same is true for opioid pain medications. Most are not susceptible to either! No one wants to get addicted. Addicts got addicted because they did not know they were getting addicted. They did not know they were getting addicted because they did not know they were getting high. Let me explain! High is never dopey, loopy, or intoxicating at first. High is anything that artificially makes you happy, sometimes extremely happy. A person who is high is always more awake and alert, not dopey or intoxicated. The high produces the same chemical reaction in your brain as sex. No one's feeling dopey or loopy while having sex. Because we have done such a poor job explaining what the true high is that someone who smokes pot and gets dopey thinks he is high (when he is not), and a person who feels great on pain pills do not think that he is (when he is). Once you understand these simple concepts, you can prevent yourself from getting addicted! This is the only way to win the war on drugs.
evergreen health physical therapy kirkland: Seeing Patients Augustus A. White III, 2019-11-19 “A powerful and extraordinarily important book.” —James P. Comer, MD “A marvelous personal journey that illuminates what it means to care for people of all races, religions, and cultures. The story of this man becomes the aspiration of all those who seek to minister not only to the body but also to the soul.” —Jerome Groopman, MD, author of How Doctors Think Growing up in Jim Crow–era Tennessee and training and teaching in overwhelmingly white medical institutions, Gus White witnessed firsthand how prejudice works in the world of medicine. While race relations have changed dramatically since then, old ways of thinking die hard. In this blend of memoir and manifesto, Dr. White draws on his experience as a resident at Stanford Medical School, a combat surgeon in Vietnam, and head orthopedic surgeon at one of Harvard’s top teaching hospitals to make sense of the unconscious bias that riddles medical care, and to explore how we can do better in a diverse twenty-first-century America. “Gus White is many things—trailblazing physician, gifted surgeon, and freedom fighter. Seeing Patients demonstrates to the world what many of us already knew—that he is also a compelling storyteller. This powerful memoir weaves personal experience and scientific research to reveal how the enduring legacy of social inequality shapes America’s medical field. For medical practitioners and patients alike, Dr. White offers both diagnosis and prescription.” —Jonathan L. Walton, Plummer Professor of Christian Morals, Harvard University “A tour de force—a compelling story about race, health, and conquering inequality in medical care...Dr. White has a uniquely perceptive lens with which to see and understand unconscious bias in health care...His journey is so absorbing that you will not be able to put this book down.” —Charles J. Ogletree, Jr., author of All Deliberate Speed
