exam chair with stirrups: Refracting through Technologies Ericka Johnson, 2019-10-08 This book explores the ‘material-discursive entanglement’ of how we both make the world with our words and how the materiality of the world forces us to put words on it. Beginning with the conundrum of how the things that make up our world are both shaped by and shape the ways in which we talk about, engage with and think about them, the author accepts the entanglement and then works backwards, using the metaphor of refraction to help articulate the structures, values and norms that discursively shape our world and our selves in it. Through a series of empirical examples taken from work on medical technologies and the body, Refracting through Technologies shows how researchers and designers can use material things – technologies – to refract discourses and articulate the concerns and voices producing them. Refraction as a metaphor is thus revealed to be an important concept, enabling scholars to apply analytical work to political concerns about the technological world. As such, it will appeal to scholars of sociology, science and technology studies, philosophy and design with interests in technoscience, feminist thought and social theory. |
exam chair with stirrups: Saha: A Novel Cho Nam-joo, 2022-11-01 TIME • Most Anticipated Books of Fall 2022 From the international best-selling author of Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982 comes this chilling dystopian fable for fans of Netflix’s Squid Game. In a country called Town, a doctor named Su is found dead in an abandoned car. There is only one place the police intend to look for her suspected killer: the Saha Estates. Controlled by a secretive organization of ministers, Town is the safest, richest nation in the world. But it is a society clearly divided into the haves and have-nots, and those who have the very least—who aren’t even considered citizens—live on the Saha Estates. Residents of Saha must squat in moldy units without plumbing or electricity and can only find work doing harsh labor. For many, the apartment complex is a bleak haven for escaping even bleaker pasts—as it was for Jin-kyung and her brother, Do-Kyung, who showed up one day sopping wet and shivering. No one is shocked when a lowlife like Do-Kyung becomes the main suspect in Su’s—a citizen’s—murder. But then Do-Kyung disappears. Isolated in a barren Saha unit, Jin-Kyung makes a choice: she will finally confront a system hellbent on erasing her brother’s existence. To find him, she must rely on her tightlipped neighbors, from the mysterious janitor known as “Old Man,” to Granny Konnim, the community gardener and reluctant midwife, to Woomi, an unwitting test subject at the local clinic. On her quest for the truth, Jin-kyung will uncover a reality far darker than she could have imagined. Written in Cho Nam-Joo’s signature sharp prose, brilliantly translated by Jamie Chang, Saha is a chilling portrait of what happens when we finally unmask our oppressors. |

exam chair with stirrups: Aquavit Karen Stensgaard, 2017-05-02 With the help of some Scandinavian aquavit, a restless businesswoman finds a bucket-list worthy voyage, but continual setbacks and bad omens try to stop her! After a traumatic night, American businesswoman Kat Jensen de-stresses with shots of Scandinavian aquavit known as ‘water of life’ liquor. With her audit consulting business closing and nothing keeping her at home in New York City, Kat has a few months before starting another job search. She decides to do something special - a cruise onboard an old clipper sailing ship pictured on an aquavit bottle. Despite finding a fantastic voyage and itinerary, Kat is forced to resolve continual issues while juggling dates with three men. After arriving in Copenhagen, Denmark, for the ship’s scheduled departure, scary omens, shocking confessions, and worries threaten all her plans. AQUAVIT features a resilient businesswoman determined to go on an unforgettable adventure on her dream ship. This novel is the first book in a series and isn’t over yet! What readers are saying: ~ Intoxicating ~ Best book I've read in years ~ Adventuresome and fun ~ Lots of twists and turns ~ Imaginative, held my interest, easy read ~ The only disappointment was that the book ended ~ This book is extremely well written. The character development is excellent, dialogue is believable, and descriptions of settings are thorough and quite vivid. The plot is intriguing, and the pace is satisfying in that the reader wants to keep turning the pages. The author makes the reader care about the characters, which is no easy feat. Independent Judge, 4 Star Review, 5th Annual Writer's Digest Self-Published eBook Award Competition Aquavit is a novel that will touch the hearts of anyone who reads it. Kat is a woman who misses the comfort zone she had with her husband. She has an urge to break out of her standard routine and try something new. The character development and scenes are impressive and well planned. Karen Stensgaard shows her writing strength in all areas of this beautiful, exciting story and the excerpt from Blueness, Book Two. The Aquamarine Sea Series is filled with romance, adventure, and a bit of danger to hold your interest. 5 Star Review, Michelle Stanley, Readers' Favorite After completely hooking us on Kat's battles with her suitors and hints of complications once Kat is on her voyage, author Karen Stensgaard leaves readers dying to know what happens with Kat, the clipper trip, and the men she leaves behind. The author gives us a taste of what's to come in the second book, Blueness, at the end of Aquavit. This sequel is already available on Amazon. But you know what I have to do before I get into that one? I've got to buy some Aquavit! There must be something in that drink besides the photo of the clipper ship on the label that got Kat so excited about sailing on an old 1860s boat! Such a refreshing change to read a unique book like this! Delightful. 5 Star Review, Viga Boland, Readers' Favorite An interesting story that explores travel and one woman's struggle with her choices, especially when it comes to where she wants to be and whom she wants to be with. The story is told in the protagonist's own words, in a first-person narrative voice that pulls the reader in right from the start. The author explores the internal fears and preoccupations of the protagonist brilliantly and allows readers to feel the vagaries of her heart and inner world. Aquavit has an international setting that is clearly depicted in the beautiful descriptions. I enjoyed the well-crafted dialogues, the richly developed characters, and the realism that permeates the narrative. 5 Star Review, Romuald Dzemo, Readers' Favorite Kat has been widowed for about a year now. She's just closed down her internal audit business and isn't quite ready to move into a new field. She gets the idea from a picture on a bottle of Aquavit to take a cruise on a vintage clipper ship. In the process, she seems to be attracting men that she's not sure are right for her. The pace was good. Kat is one of those characters that things just keep happening around and who doesn't sit still for long. She moved on from one thing to another and didn't let the dust settle. The tension was amazing. I remember when I got to the last page, I let out my breath, not realizing I'd been holding it. I had to let the tension go! I'm intrigued with this clipper ship business. They have asked all sorts of questions. They have made all sorts of rules about what she can and cannot take. The three men in Kat's life were great. I thought they were a really nice assortment. Greg and his snap changes of personality. Charlie and his possible ulterior motives, and Matteo and his possible outside interests. They were all nice enough to be possibilities, but then they all had their faults as well. The author's profile says she has more books with Kat's adventures underway, so let's hope we don't have to wait too long for the next installment. Highlights from Blue Cat Book Blogger Review |

exam chair with stirrups: Little Miracles Everywhere Marcie Fallek, 2024-10-29 Join holistic veterinarian Marcie Fallek on an unconventional healing path that puts love of animals and their wellness first. In this funny, honest, and illuminating memoir, Marcie Fallek, a skeptical New Yorker and animal lover, embarks on a journey to become a veterinarian. She begins her quest at an Italian veterinary school, where most students flunk out. Her struggles lead her to India, in search of Divine help. She vows, following a series of cathartic experiences there, to devote her life to caring for animals, with her conscience as her guide. Eventually licensed and working, Marcie discovers that the driving force for many of her colleagues is money, not a love of animals. Unscrupulous vets fake test results, perform unnecessary procedures, and prescribe drugs and food to line their pockets. In fact, Marcie discovers that many of the very prescriptions and procedures designed to heal her charges might, in fact, be leading to more injury and illness. Though she risks losing everything that took so long to build, she sets out to learn the truth. This quest is not without consequences. Yet Marcie stays true to her ethical compass, refusing to compromise her morals and values. At each dark turn, a succession of instances (coincidences? miracles?) leads her down an unconventional healing path, where her spiritual and professional self merge. Marcie finds her true purpose in life: healing animals—including those destined for end-of-life measures—using her wits, wisdom, intuition, love, and holistic care. |

exam chair with stirrups: Cage The Hummingbird Angela Stanfield, 2022-08-05 Kat trembled in fear; her heart racing as she looked around the windowless room. She sat against the headboard of the bed, staring at the scarring and damage of the wood of the four bedposts, indicating that women before her had been shackled against their will. She glanced fearfully at the guard who sat across the room from her, watching her without sympathy. How could her life have changed in a flash of a few seconds? Just a year before she had joined her family on the island, which had seemed to promise peace and tranquility. It had been anything but for her, as she battled her mother's intolerance and abuse of her, and what seemed like constant scheming against her by her arch enemy she'd known since childhood. And now, just as life was beginning to fulfill the promise of peace, she was facing terror instead. Kat heard the door to her room open, and her eyes widened as he walked in, smiling and greeting her with those black, soulless eyes that were devoid of humanity. Kito came to her mind instantly. She knew now why she was there. Revenge on Kito Robinson. As Kito's enemy drew near to her, Kat wondered if she had any hope at all. Would Kito be able to use his vast resources to find her on time? Or was she doomed as the other missing islanders had been? Cage the Hummingbird tells the story of Kat Jordan, a quirky, impulsive, art prodigy, brain injury survivor who limps her way into the life of Kito Robinson. Kito's atheistic world will be rocked by Kat's outlandish humor, antics, and devotion to her faith. It is a tale of overcoming obstacles of cultural differences, beliefs, and severe suffering and trauma through the incredible power of having a relationship and identity in Jesus Christ. |

exam chair with stirrups: City of Dreadful Delight Judith R. Walkowitz, 1992-10-15 From tabloid exposes of child prostitution to the grisly tales of Jack the Ripper, narratives of sexual danger pulsated through Victorian London. Expertly blending social history and cultural criticism, Judith Walkowitz shows how these narratives reveal the complex dramas of power, politics, and sexuality that were being played out in late nineteenth-century Britain, and how they influenced the language of politics, journalism, and fiction. Victorian London was a world where long-standing traditions of class and gender were challenged by a range of public spectacles, mass media scandals, new commercial spaces, and a proliferation of new sexual categories and identities. In the midst of this changing culture, women of many classes challenged the traditional privileges of elite males and asserted their presence in the public domain. An important catalyst in this conflict, argues Walkowitz, was W. T. Stead's widely read 1885 article about child prostitution. Capitalizing on the uproar caused by the piece and the volatile political climate of the time, women spoke of sexual danger, articulating their own grievances against men, inserting themselves into the public discussion of sex to an unprecedented extent, and gaining new entree to public spaces and journalistic practices. The ultimate manifestation of class anxiety and gender antagonism came in 1888 with the tabloid tales of Jack the Ripper. In between, there were quotidien stories of sexual possibility and urban adventure, and Walkowitz examines them all, showing how women were not simply figures in the imaginary landscape of male spectators, but also central actors in the stories of metropolotin life that reverberated in courtrooms, learned journals, drawing rooms, street corners, and in the letters columns of the daily press. A model of cultural history, this ambitious book will stimulate and enlighten readers across a broad range of interests. |

exam chair with stirrups: Your Heart Is the Size of Your Fist Martina Scholtens, 2017-09-26 An absorbing and touching read, this collection of true stories is the first book by a Canadian doctor on the topic of refugee health. Your Heart Is the Size of Your Fist draws readers into the complicated, poignant, and often-overlooked daily happenings of a busy urban medical clinic for refugees. An Iraqi journalist whose son has been been murdered develops post-traumatic stress disorder and mourns his loss of vocation. A Congolese woman refuses antiretroviral treatment for her new HIV diagnosis, and instead places her trust in Jesus. Two conservative Muslim Iraqi women are inadvertently exposed to pornography when a doctor uses Google Images to supplement a medical discussion. By turns humorous, distressing, and moving, these stories offer insight into the people seeking a new life while navigating poverty, language barriers, and neighbours who aren’t always friendly. This riveting collection of true stories from Dr. Martina Scholtens is filled with hope and humour, and together make up a deeply moving portrait of how one doctor attempts to provide quality care and advocacy for patients while remaining culturally sensitive, even as she wrestles with guilt, awareness of her own privilege, the faith she was raised with, and vicarious trauma after hearing countless stories of brutality and suffering. In the spirit of Louise Aronson and Atul Gawande, Scholtens’ writing is based on her personal experiences and explores the transformative moments in which a clinical doctor-patient relationship becomes a profound human-human connection. |

exam chair with stirrups: Twin to Twin Crystal Duffy, 2018-12-15 A twenty-nine-year-old mother’s harrowing and inspiring adventure through a high-risk twin pregnancy. One minute Crystal was sitting at a candlelight dinner in Paris with her husband. The next she was back home in Houston, sitting in her OB-GYN’s office concerned that she was having a second miscarriage. But she was actually pregnant with twins! Since Crystal and her husband Ed already had a two-year-old daughter, Abigail, she couldn’t imagine why mothering twins would be all that different. That is until she learns her twins have a life-threatening condition called Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome, meaning Baby B is transfusing blood (disproportionately) to Baby A. Crystal is declared too high risk, so her OB sends her to the 5th floor of the Houston Medical Center for the duration of her pregnancy. Sitting alone in her hospital bed, Crystal wonders how she’ll pass the next few weeks, away from her husband and daughter. Soon she embarks on an emotional rollercoaster—from late night emergency ultrasounds to hospital baby blessings, sprinkled with comic relief from nurses and hospital staff. Twin to Twin is a raw and inspirational story filled with tenderness, vulnerability, and humor. It chronicles the wildest, most terrifying and challenging year of Crystal’s life, which is also the most beautiful and eye-opening. Her hope is that it will bring strength to other women dealing with their own personal trials and tragedies, so they can also triumph. Praise for Twin to Twin “An “orphan” disease, expectant mothers with Twin to Twin (and their support systems) should adopt . . . Twin to Twin. An intimate account, told with flagging and unflagging optimism, Duffy’s story ensures that others need not ride alone through this rollercoaster experience.” —Suzy Becker, author of One Good Egg “Duffy’s wit and self-deprecating humor helped her survive the realities and (sometimes devastating) physical and emotional truths of her high-stakes twin pregnancy. Twin to Twin is engaging, compelling, and yes, entertaining read.” —Susan Krawitz, author of Viva Rose |
