diagram of a volvox: The Developmental Biology of Reproduction Clement Markert, 2012-12-02 The Developmental Biology of Reproduction documents the proceedings of the 33rd symposium of the Society for Developmental Biology. Reproductive Biology was selected as the main theme of the symposium. The symposium aimed to draw center attention on basic aspects of reproduction in both plants and animals in the hope of stimulating research that might provide the necessary foundation for effective, practical control of human reproduction. Five areas were selected for emphasis: the formation of eggs and sperm; the activation of the egg to develop into an embryo; the genetic and biochemical events underlying the early development of the embryo; the hormonal controls operating in the reproductive process; and the general control of implantation and growth of the mammalian embryo in the uterus. Thirteen reports were given by distinguished researchers in each of these areas. All biologists interested in a broad understanding of problems of reproduction will find this symposium interesting and important for their own work. |

diagram of a volvox: Invertebrate Embryology and Reproduction Fatma El-Bawab, 2020-01-18 Invertebrate Embryology and Reproduction deals with the practical and theoretical objectives of the descriptive embryology of invertebrates, along with discussions on reproduction in these groups of animals. It explains several morphological and anatomical expressions in the field and covers the embryology of invertebrate animals, starting from the Protozoa, to the Echinodermata, the Protochordate and Tunicates. These groups include economically important aquatic invertebrates, such as crustaceans, as well as medically important invertebrates and economic arthropods. Each chapter is preceded by the taxonomy of the discussed phylum and/or the species to enable the reader to locate the systematic position. - Covers phylum definition, general characteristics, classification, reproduction, agametic reproduction, gametic reproduction, spawning, fertilization, development and embryogenesis - Includes recent findings in the area, along with detailed figures and photos that illustrate important concepts - Brings together difficult-to-obtain research data from the field, not only in Egyptian libraries, but globally, and previously only found through specialized references not widely available - Clarifies descriptions with striking photos and electron microscopical studies of different species |

diagram of a volvox: The Essential Tension Sonya Bahar, 2017-11-28 'The Essential Tension' explores how agents that naturally compete come to act together as a group. The author argues that the controversial concept of multilevel selection is essential to biological evolution, a proposition set to stimulate new debate. The idea of one collective unit emerging from the cooperative interactions of its constituent (and mutually competitive) parts has its roots in the ancient world. More recently, it has illuminated studies of animal behavior, and played a controversial role in evolutionary biology. In Part I, the author explores the historical development of the idea of a collectivity in biological systems, from early speculations on the sociology of human crowd behavior, through the mid-twentieth century debates over the role of group selection in evolution, to the notion of the selfish gene. Part II investigates the balance between competition and cooperation in a range of contemporary biological problems, from flocking and swarming to experimental evolution and the evolution of multicellularity. Part III addresses experimental studies of cooperation and competition, as well as controversial ideas such as the evolution of evolvability and Stephen Jay Gould’s suggestion that “spandrels” at one level of selection serve as possible sources of variability for the next higher level. Finally, building on the foundation established in the preceding chapters, the author arrives at a provocative new proposition: as a result of the essential tension between competition and cooperation, multiple levels may be essential in order for evolutionary processes to occur at all. |

diagram of a volvox: Protozoology Karl Gottlieb Grell, 2013-11-11 When I prepared the first German edition of this book in 1955, it was my intention to acquaint biologists in my country with the new and exciting results being obtained on the other side of theAtlantic Ocean (incl. the English Channel). In the meantime, especially after publication of the second German edition in 1968, Dr. Konrad F. Springer and many colleagues, too, suggested that I should prepare an English version. Though this was the exact opposite of my original intention, I finally agreed despite the risks involved. Since 1968 our knowledge in Protozoology increased considerably. Though I tried to concentrate the text as much as possible, an enlargement of up to pages 554 was unavoidable. Many figures have been changed, replaced and added. Altogether their number increased from 422 to 437. In my opinion, it is only a matter of time before the true protozoologists dis appear. There will be cell biologists, biochemists, geneticists and others working with certain Protozoa, but very few who are interested in the group as a whole, their morphological and physiological diversity, their various types of reproduction and their relationships to other groups of organisms. Even at the present time, the Society of Protozoologists, comprising more than thousand members, consists for the most part of specialists who concentrate their efforts specifically upon Chlamy domonas, Amoeba, Plasmodium, Tetrahymena or some other protozoans. |
diagram of a volvox: Biology of Aging Robert Arking, 2006-02-02 Robert Arking's Biology of Aging, 3rd edition, is an introductory text to the biology of aging which gives advanced undergraduate and graduate students a thorough review of the entire field. His prior two editions have also served admirably as a reference text for clinicians and scientists. This new edition captures the extraordinary recent advances in our knowledge of the ultimate and proximal mechanisms underlying the phenomenon of aging. As a result, six important conceptual changes are included here: · Clarified distinctions between the biological mechanisms involved in longevity determination and those involved in senescent processes. · A new conceptual framework around which we can organize all the new facts about aging. This will assist readers to make sense of the information and use the data to form their own ideas. · Increased knowledge of aging cells has lead to new ideas on how a cell transits from a healthy state to a senescent state, while still allowing for high levels of intra- and inter-specific variability. · Discussion of senescent mechanisms assists the reader to understand that aging is a non-programmatic loss of function, likely arising from the loss of regulatory signals, and so is modifiable in the laboratory. · Because the standard evolutionary story does not fully explain the evolution of social organisms, this edition also includes recent work dealing with intergenerational resource transfers. · Lastly, if aging mechanisms are plastic, then the demand to move these anti-aging interventions into the human arena will inevitably grow. A discussion of the biological and ethical arguments on both sides of the question frames the question in an appropriate manner. The mass of data related to aging is summarized into fifteen focused chapters, each dealing with some particular aspect of the problem. The last two chapters integrate all this material into a coherent view of how the relevant biological processes change over the life span. This view is expressed in two non-technical figures (you might say that the whole book exists to fully support Figs 9-4 & 14-9), whose meanings are elucidated as the reader progresses through the book. |
diagram of a volvox: An Introduction to the Study of Algae V. J. Chapman, 2013-12-19 Originally published in 1941, this book was written to provide an elementary textbook on phycology suitable for university students and schools including visits to marine biological stations as part of their curriculum. Relatively few types are selected from each algae group; some are described in considerable detail whilst others are mentioned to illustrate the course of development in either the vegetative or reproductive organs. Illustrative figures are included throughout. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in phycology and the history of science. |

diagram of a volvox: How Life Moves Caryn McHose, Kevin Frank, 2006-05-25 This comprehensive movement program uses the story of biological evolution as a tool to increase strength, flexibility, and body awareness. Readers learn to unlearn inherited bodily habits by embodying the many forms that life has expressed on Earth—from the single cell to the human being—and shifting their perception. Through this evolutionary movement, the body's native intelligence is revived and new movements can be learned, enabling the body to overcome chronic musculoskeletal complaints such as lower back, shoulder, and neck pain, and to meet whatever challenges it is faced with. |
