| diagram of a suppressor: Ion Chromatography Hamish Small, 2013-11-11 Bewitched is an odd word with which to begin a chemical textbook. Yet that is a fair description of how I reacted on first leaming of ion exchange and imagining what might be done with it. That initial fascination has not left me these many years later, and it has provided much ofthe motivation for writing this book. The perceived need for a text on the fundamentals of ion chromatography provided the rest. Many readers will have a general idea of what ion chromatography is and what it does. Briefly, for those who do not, it is an umbrella term for a variety of chromatographie methods for the rapid and sensitive analysis of mixtures of ionic species. It has become highly developed in the last decade, and while it is now routinely used for the determination of organic as weH as inorganic ions, its initial impact was greatest in the area of inorganic analysis. In the past the determination of inorganic ions, particularly anions, meant laborious, time-con suming, and often not very sensitive wet chemieal methods. In the last ten years that has changed radically as ion chromatography has supplanted these older methods. |

| diagram of a suppressor: Quasi-linear Interference Suppressor Alan Clair Phillips, Stanford University Stanford Electronics Laboratories, 1968 The purpose of the research was to devise and test new interference suppression techniques. A major motivation was the desire to minimize the deleterious effects of HF radio-station interference to an ionosphere sounder. Previous research has shown that the FM-CW waveform is particularly attractive for ionosphere sounding because of the ability to generate waveforms having very large time bandwidth products using electronically controlled frequency synthesizers. In studying interference problems during this research it was appreciated for the first time that simple nonlinear processing (e.g., clipping) in the FM-CW sounder is directly analogous to the much more complicated nonlinear processing (e.g., frequency-by-frequency limiting) necessary in the corresponding simple-pulse or coded-pulse sounding systems. A new interference suppression method was devised and shown to be effective in removing pulse or FM-CW interference from narrow-band signals. Interference energy at frequencies outside the desired-signal bandwidth is processed and used to balance out the interference energy included with the desired signal. The balancing action is intermittent and the principle of operation is to switch from one linear mode to another, hence the name quasi-linear suppressor. (Author). |

Because of the ever-increasing demands to provide a wider range of sophisticated and reliable vacuum equipment a good understanding of these instruments is of vital importance to all workers in the research and industrial sectors. Of the gauges considered only the mechanical types are absolute, in the sense that they measure pressure directly as a force upon a liquid column or a solid surface. Under ideal conditions it is possible to calculate their sensitiv ities, which are the same for all gases and vapours. The recent developments in the viscous or molecular damping gauges indicate that these may also be considered absolute. Other gauges are indirect in that they involve the measurement of some secondary phenomenon which is pressure-dependent and therefore these gauges can only be used for measurement after calibration against an absolute standard. The radiometer or Knudsen type gauge has been excluded from the text since these are now only of historic interest. Also no mention is made of the integration techniques involving surface changes (such as work function) although these could have application under very special circumstances. The McLeod gauge is dealt with in some detail, for even though this gauge has few practical applications, it is the most sensitive absolute gauge available and has value as a reference standard. |
