  diagram of the galaxy: An Atlas of Selected Galaxies Sunggyu Takase, 2023-01-06 It is only several decades since galaxies were recognized as huge aggregations of matter in the universe which consist of myriads of stars and vast clouds of gas. The wide variety of shapes of galaxies is one of the wonders of the universe. Attempts to classify galaxies have continued since an early stage of study, when they were still called nebulae. The first step towards classification was a grouping of the patterns; the second step a systematic arrangement of various morphological types. Classification schemes that are in present use, such as Hubble's, are in the second group. These classifications are usually based on pattern recognition after a visual inspection of the photographic image of the galaxy, and is therefore qualitative and more or less subjective. Using surface photometry of galaxies, a technique which has advanced remarkably in recent years, photographs of galaxies taken in several colour bands can now be efficiently reduced to photometric data. Analysis of this data gives quantitative information on the luminosity and colour distribution for every element of galaxies. The Atlas of Selected Galaxies presents photographs taken with the Okayama 188 cm reflector and the Kiso 105 cm Schmidt telescope for the purpose of photometric analysis. A large number of illustration are given to demonstrate the way in which photographs of galaxies are reduced into quantitative data. These illustrations also show some representative results obtained in the course of the editors' work on the quantitative classification of galaxies. Part I, General Description of the Classification and Photometric Analyses, includes eight sections, whose authors all shared the photometric work and prepared the photographs. In Part II, The Atlas, the illustrations are arranged in sections corresponding to those in Part I. Part III includes tables of data for the atlas.

Contopoulos, 2012-12-06 The idea of the organization of a Symposium on Spiral Structure came at a special meeting of Commission 33 on Spiral Structure during the 12th General Assembly of the IAU in Prague, 1967. So much interest was shown during this meeting that one of us proposed a special Symposium on the 'Spiral Structure of Our Galaxy' for 1969. The response was immediate and it was finally agreed upon holding the Symposium in Basel, a center of galactic research in the center of Europe. During the next months a special 'List of Problems', related to this Symposium, was sent to many prospective participants by the president of Commission 33. This stimulated an increase of interest in problems of galactic spiral structure and a con centrated effort on some problems. The organizing Committee of the Symposium was composed of Drs. L. Woltjer (president), W. Becker, A. Blaauw, B. J. Bok, G. Contopoulos, F. J. Kerr, C. C. Lin, S. W. McCuskey and S. B. Pikel'ner. Most of the work for the organization of the Symposium was carried by Dr. L. W oltjer. The Local Committee, composed of Drs. W. Becker, U. W. Steinlin, R. P. Fenkart, and G. A. Tammann, made every effort to secure the success of the Symposium. Most of the credit goes to Dr. Steinlin. The Symposium was supported financially by the IAU and by the Swiss National Science Foundation. The meetings took place at the University of Basel, which provided also secretarial help and many other facilities.

They are the basic building blocks of the Universe, gathered in groups, clusters and super-clusters. They exist in many forms, either as spheroids or disks. Kron, Alvio Renzini, 2012-12-06 This workshop was intended as an update and an extension of the workshop 011 the Spectral Evolution of Galaxies that was held in Erice two years ago. It concentrates 011 Ilew developments concerning galaxies seen at large look back times. This seemed also a good opportunity to look ahead to the next generation of ground- and space based instrumentation, and to consider various future strategies for collecting information concerning the edge of the observable universe. The main idea was to bring together people with specialities in modelling galaxy components (such as stars, clusters, gas, and dust) as well as whole stellar systems (stellar populations, star formation rates, chemical enrichment), and people specialized in making direct measurements of galaxies and clusters at large look back times. The confrontation of expectations and observations was planned to be the central theme of the conference, which explains the title Towards Understanding Galaxies at Large Redshift. The first part of the workshop focussed on the physical processes that operate in galaxies, and that would likely have some observable manifestation at large redshifts. In the second part the most recent observational work was reported, and we were pleased to have the participation of most of the groups active in this field. The last part was directed towards new approaches to be made possible by the next generation of instrumentation, although in general all the contributions were indeed in this spirit of setting more ambitious goals.

The main body of the thesis describes the kinematic observations with the GHaFAS Fabry-Perot instrument on the William Herschel Telescope of a sample of 29 spiral galaxies. The work is closely related to the Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies, and uses the mid-infrared data of that survey to determine key parameters of the galaxies studied. From these data, important results are obtained on streaming and other non-circular motions in galaxies, on the distribution and rates of star formation, and on how correlations of these parameters and of the rotation curve shape with basic galaxy parameters yield clues on the evolutionary processes taking place in disk galaxies.
