diagram of the rain gauge: Advances in Spatio-Temporal Analysis Xinming Tang, Yaolin Liu, Jixian Zhang, Wolfgang Kainz, 2007-08-23 Developments in Geographic Information Technology have raised the expectations of users. A static map is no longer enough; there is now demand for a dynamic representation. Time is of great importance when operating on real world geographical phenomena, especially when these are dynamic. Researchers in the field of Temporal Geographical Information Systems (TGIS) have been developing methods of incorporating time into geographical information systems. Spatio-temporal analysis embodies spatial modelling, spatio-temporal modelling and spatial reasoning and data mining. Advances in Spatio-Temporal Analysis contributes to the field of spatio-temporal analysis, presenting innovative ideas and examples that reflect current progress and achievements. |

diagram of the rain gauge: Formative Assessment Strategies for Enhanced Learning in Science, K-8 Elizabeth Hammerman, 2009 Proven to be one of the most powerful tools for promoting effective learning, formative assessment enables teachers to capture evidence of student thinking and learning and use that information to adjust instruction. In this concise resource, science educator Elizabeth Hammerman clearly outlines the formative assessment process and provides practical strategies for embedding assessments into the Kئ8 standards-based science curriculum. This research-based book demonstrates how student-centered assessment helps students assume more responsibility for what they learn and how they learn. Teachers can use the various models of formative assessments to monitor student progress and evaluate learning. The author guides readers through discussions, thought and reflection activities, analyses of assessment techniques, and applications to classroom practice. Ideal for teachers and science and curriculum specialists, this user-friendly resource provides all the necessary tools to: assess student understanding using observation checklists, questioning strategies, notebooks, reports, graphic organizers, projects, and performance tasks; differentiate science instruction to reach all learners; use rubrics as a means of discovering student strengths and weaknesses; collect student data to inform instructional decisions. With this easy-to-implement guide, any teacher can effectively use formative assessment strategies to enhance instruction and increase student achievement in science.--Publisher's website. |

diagram of the rain gauge: Doppler Radar and Weather Observations Richard J. Doviak, 2012-12-02 Doppler Radar and Weather Observations deals with the use of Doppler radar to make observations of a variety of weather phenomena such as tornado vortices, hurricanes, and lightning channels. Topics covered include electromagnetic waves and propagation; weather echo signals; Doppler spectra of weather echoes; and meteorological radar signal processing. Rain and turbulence measurements are also considered, along with observations of winds, storms, and related phenomena. Comprised of 11 chapters, this book begins with an introduction to weather radar principles and how the radar parameters and signal characteristics relate to the target's meteorological properties. The effect of the atmosphere on the path of the signal is then examined, together with techniques used in extracting a target's properties from its echoes. The radar signal path from the transmitter, through the antenna, along the beam to the target, and on its return to the receiver is also discussed. Subsequent chapters explore the discrete Fourier transform and its application to weather echo signals; the weather Doppler spectrum and the signal processing methods used to derive its principal moments; range and Doppler velocity ambiguities as they pertain to distributed targets; and the limitations imposed by antenna sidelobes, ground clutter, signal decorrelation, and power. A comprehensive treatment of pulse compression and the Doppler processing of frequency modulated signals is given. This monograph should be of value to oceanographers, meteorologists, atmospheric scientists, and radar engineers, as well as students and researchers interested in Doppler radar principles. |

diagram of the rain gauge: Picture Business James Stratton, 2016-09-16 Los Angeles past and present is the focus of this accomplished, entertaining collection of short stories, poems and essays. Among the unforgettable characters are a faded actress planning a media hoax, a would-be entertainment mogul, a young Midwest widow in love with Dean Martin, an ambitious newscaster, a cranky film director and a pigeon who doubles as a talent agent. The comically bizarre settings include a Las Vegas coffee shop, a university department devoted to Marilyn Monroe studies, a junior high science fair and a swimming raft off the coast of Malibu. Varied in tone and theme, the pieces are linked by an unfailing eye for detail and a fondness for the absurd. This is a Los Angeles, according to the introduction, of “dreamers, hustlers, artists, visionaries, eccentrics and a considerable number of ordinary working people who have come west to reinvent themselves.” |
