Very little information is available about the current status of the potential impact of soil degradation and whether the situation is worsening in all the States of northern Nigeria. However, it is now clear that the major factor explaining the severity and spatial distribution of soil degradation such as erosion and desertification in northern Nigeria is associated with human impact such as deforestation and mismanagement of land resources. Other factors includes overgrazing, use of mechanized equipment, deforestation and lack of government concern to protect the environment in the region, but few studies have been made on applied issues related to the physical and chemical processes including erosion, runoff and leaching. These problems are widely considered as a serious problem to agricultural production and its environmental consequences will remain an important issue during the 21st century. Possible solutions such as soil management practices will help to minimise/control soil degradations which caused serious hazards to farmer's land in northern Nigeria. Sustainable soil management practices are vital for enhancing and sustaining the productivity of soil, food, livestock, water quality and other related land resources such as forestry in northern Nigeria. The critical impetus of this book is to contribute to the literature of this area, with a detailed exploration of the Nigerian regulatory architecture. In addition, the book also engages in a comparative analysis with two emerging economies in Africa: South Africa and Kenya. It also considers the UK and the US as comparator jurisdictions in light of their regulatory responses to the global financial crisis of 2008. This book contributes to the ongoing discourse in this area by exploring, in detail, the theoretical underpinnings of regulation and supervision, to determine whether there is an understanding of what constitutes effective regulation in these jurisdictions. Given that Nigeria is the core jurisdictional focus, a historical account of banking exchanges from the pre-colonial era to more recent times is provided. Offering an understanding of how political, local and economic settings, in conjunction with the theories of regulation, have impacted and influenced regulatory development in Nigeria, the book engages in an examination of Nigeria’s historical experiences with bank failures, including the banking crisis it experienced in 2008. federal university of technology babura: Emotions in Muslim Hausa Women's Fiction Umma Aliyu Musa, 2021-03-31 This book examines the emotions expressed in Hausa women's prose fiction in northern Nigeria, showing how Hausa Muslim women writers use fiction in their indigenous language to demonstrate and express their anger about the problems they face in a patriarchal society. Umma Aliyu Musa shows how Hausa women authors use literature as a subversive instrument to voice their anger and draw attention to their plight, and what they perceive to be unfair traditional authority in a male-dominated society. Their stories about women protagonists who rebel against existing traditional structures enable women readers to understand the anger experienced by other women who have gone through similar situations. Issues at the heart of these women's narratives include forced marriage, polygyny, family honor and the effects of love. The authors' use of metaphorical expressions of anger, particularly those registered through body parts, provides insight into Hausa women's thoughts, culture and socialization within their private spheres. Thus, writing by these women in the Hausa language creates an effective communication network that offers insight into domestic ecology as it affects women.
