fedorov therapy in the united states: The Syndicate of Twenty-two Natives Lindiwe Sangweni-Siddo, 2024-08-01 In The Syndicate of Twenty-two Natives, Lindiwe Sangweni-Siddo offers an elegy to her father, the late Professor Stan Sangweni, which explores the personal saga of a family’s lineage rooted in Zuka on Suspence Farm, Newcastle, in what is now northern KwaZulu-Natal. In turn, Prof Sangweni opens a window into a past where his grandfather, with foresight and ingenuity, became part of The Syndicate of Twenty-two Natives, a group that secured land for their families, including his family of seven wives, and for succeeding generations at a time when Black people in South Africa were being systematically dispossessed of their land. While packing up her father’s study as her parents prepare to move from their home after 27 years, Lindiwe and her father uncover his lifelong collection of documents and pictures that detail the intricacies of his life as a devoted family man, an ANC veteran and anti-apartheid activist, a pioneer of public service excellence in post-apartheid South Africa and an inveterate stickler for detail in every aspect of his life. Inspiring, often humorous, occasionally cataclysmically disruptive and generally victorious, this memoir is a tribute and a testament to the enduring legacy of those who paved the way amidst the trials of history for future generations. |

fedorov therapy in the united states: Development of Gene Therapies Avery McIntosh, Oleksandr Sverdlov, 2024-05-23 Cell and gene therapies have become the third major drug modality in pharmaceutical medicine of the 21st century after low molecular weight and antibody drugs. The gene therapy (GTx) field is rapidly advancing, and yet there are still fundamental scientific questions that remain to be answered. Development of GTx products poses unique challenges and opportunities for drug developers. However, there is lack of a systematic exposition of the GTx product development and the pivotal role of the biostatistician in this process. Development of Gene Therapies: Strategic, Scientific, and Regulatory, and Access Considerations attempts to summarize the current state-of-the-art strategic, scientific, statistical, and regulatory aspects of GTx development. Intended to provide an exposition to the GTx new product development through peer-reviewed papers written by subject matter experts in this emerging field, this book will be useful for researchers in gene therapy drug development, biostatisticians, regulators, patient advocates, graduate students, and the finance and business development community . Key Features: A collection of papers covering a wide spectrum of topics in gene therapies (GTx), written by leading subject matter experts An exposition of the core principles of GTx product development, emerging business models, industry standards, best practices, and regulatory pathways An exposition of statistical and innovative modeling tools for design and analysis of clinical trials of GTx Insights into commercial models, access hurdles, and health economics of gene therapies Case studies of successful GTx approvals from core team members that developed the first two FDA-approved AAV gene therapies: Luxturna and Zolgensma A discussion of potential benefits and hurdles to be overcome for GTx in coming years from a multi-stakeholder perspective |

fedorov therapy in the united states: The Price of Immortality Peter Ward, 2022-04-19 In the tradition of Jon Ronson and Tim Wu, an absorbing and revelatory journey into the American Way of Defying Death . . . As longevity medicine revolutionizes the lives of many older people, the quest to take the next step—to live as long as we choose—has spurred a scientific arms race in search of the elixir of life, funded by Big Tech and Silicon Valley. Once the stuff of Mesopotamian mythology and episodes of Star Trek, the effort to make humans immortal is becoming increasingly credible as the pace of technological progress quickens. It has also empowered a wild-eyed fringe of pseudo-scientists, tech visionaries, scam-artists, and religious fanatics who have given their lives over to the pursuit of immortality. Starting off at the Church of Perpetual Life in Florida and exploring the feuding subcultures around the cryonics industry, Peter Ward immerses himself into an eccentric world of startups, scam artists, scientific institutions, and tech billionaires to deliver this deeply reported, nuanced, and sometimes very funny exploration of the race for immortality — and the potentially devastating consequences should humanity realize its ultimate dream. |

fedorov therapy in the united states: Priests of Prosperity Juliet Johnson, 2016-02-11 Priests of Prosperity explores the unsung revolutionary campaign to transform postcommunist central banks from command-economy cash cows into Western-style monetary guardians. Juliet Johnson conducted more than 160 interviews in seventeen countries with central bankers, international assistance providers, policymakers, and private-sector finance professionals over the course of fifteen years. She argues that a powerful transnational central banking community concentrated in Western Europe and North America integrated postcommunist central bankers into its network, shaped their ideas about the role of central banks, and helped them develop modern tools of central banking. Johnson’s detailed comparative studies of central bank development in Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Russia, and Kyrgyzstan take readers from the birth of the campaign in the late 1980s to the challenges faced by central bankers after the global financial crisis. As the comfortable certainties of the past collapse around them, today’s central bankers in the postcommunist world and beyond find themselves torn between allegiance to their transnational community and its principles on the one hand and their increasingly complex and politicized national roles on the other. Priests of Prosperity will appeal to a diverse audience of scholars in political science, finance, economics, geography, and sociology as well as to central bankers and other policymakers interested in the future of international finance, global governance, and economic development. |
fedorov therapy in the united states: Human Skin Cancer, Potential Biomarkers and Therapeutic Targets Miroslav Blumenberg, 2016-10-19 Skin cancers, basal and squamous cell carcinomas, malignant melanomas, and Merkel cell carcinomas, constitute arguably the most common and increasingly prevalent human neoplasms. Here we discuss the epigenetic changes in DNA and chromatin, which are increasingly associated with melanoma. Several chapters focus on the posttranscriptional modification of the proteins at the melanocyte cell surface, their role in tumorigenesis, and their potential as therapeutic targets. Specifically, extracellular modifications of integrins, glycosylation of cell surface proteins, and changes of cadherins are presented. In a very interesting approach, a potential to target the mitochondria of melanoma cells is investigated. In conclusion, this volume presents various aspects of human skin cancers, components of the large worldwide effort to combat and eradicate this growing health concern. |
