ff14 island sanctuary workshop guide: The Daedalus Incident Michael J. Martinez, 2016-03-15 Bizarre earthquakes are rumbling over the long-dormant tectonic plates of the planet, disrupting its trillion-dollar mining operations and driving scientists past the edges of theory and reason. However, when rocks shake off their ancient dust and begin to roll—seemingly of their own volition—carving canals as they converge to form a towering structure amid the ruddy terrain, Lt. Jain and her JSC team realize that their routine geological survey of a Martian cave system is anything but. The only clues they have stem from the emissions of a mysterious blue radiation, and a 300-year-old journal that is writing itself. Lt. Thomas Weatherby of His Majesty’s Royal Navy is an honest 18th-century man of modest beginnings, doing his part for King and Country aboard the HMS Daedalus, a frigate sailing the high seas between continents . . . and the immense Void between the Known Worlds. Across the Solar System and among its colonies—rife with plunder and alien slave trade—through dire battles fraught with strange alchemy, nothing much can shake his resolve. But events are transpiring to change all that. With the aid of his fierce captain, a drug-addled alchemist, and a servant girl with a remarkable past, Weatherby must track a great and powerful mystic, who has embarked upon a sinister quest to upset the balance of the planets—the consequences of which may reach far beyond the Solar System, threatening the very fabric of space itself. Set sail among the stars with this uncanny tale, where adventure awaits, and dimensions collide!   ff14 island sanctuary workshop guide: A Composer's Guide to Game Music Winifred Phillips, 2017-08-11 A comprehensive, practical guide to composing video game music, from acquiring the necessary skills to finding work in the field. Music in video games is often a sophisticated, complex composition that serves to engage the player, set the pace of play, and aid interactivity. Composers of video game music must master an array of specialized skills not taught in the conservatory, including the creation of linear loops, music chunks for horizontal resequencing, and compositional fragments for use within a generative framework. In A Composer's Guide to Game Music, Winifred Phillips—herself an award-winning composer of video game music—provides a comprehensive, practical guide that leads an aspiring video game composer from acquiring the necessary creative skills to understanding the function of music in games to finding work in the field. Musicians and composers may be drawn to game music composition because the game industry is a multibillion-dollar, employment-generating economic powerhouse, but, Phillips writes, the most important qualification for a musician who wants to become a game music composer is a love of video games. Phillips offers detailed coverage of essential topics, including musicianship and composition experience; immersion; musical themes; music and game genres; workflow; working with a development team; linear music; interactive music, both rendered and generative; audio technology, from mixers and preamps to software; and running a business. A Composer's Guide to Game Music offers indispensable guidance for musicians and composers who want to deploy their creativity in a dynamic and growing industry, protect their musical identities while working in a highly technical field, and create great music within the constraints of a new medium.

ff14 island sanctuary workshop guide: Perceptions of Byzantium and Its Neighbors Olenka Z. Pevny, 2000 The thirteen papers in this volume were delivered at the international symposium held at The Metropolitan Museum of Art May 23-25, 1997, in the context of The Glory of Byzantium exhibition, which was on view from March 11 through July 6, 1997. One of the main purposes of this exhibition was to explore the Byzantine Empire's complex and varied relationship with its neighbors, recognizing the multi-national, multi-ethnic, and multi-cultural character of its artistic traditions. Whereas the symposium was conceived in close conjunction with the exhibition, its intent was somewhat different. It strove to acknowledge the international character and diversity of current scholarship on Byzantine art, and to present not only new material but also the variety of objectives, approaches, and methodologies that shape modern perceptions of the subject. Thus, the symposium was not restricted to a specific theme; instead, the participants were asked to address a broad range of aspects of the Glory of Byzantium exhibition. The contributors to this volume, all of whom are scholars of Byzantine art and culture, hail from ten different countries, including Austria, Bulgaria, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Poland, the Russian Federation, Ukraine, and the United States of America. They all hold prominent positions in the leading scholarly or cultural institutions of their respective countries, and are distinguished experts in their fields of specialization, with established international reputations. Immediately apparent is that many of the authors are from Eastern Europe, and reside in lands that once were under the ecclesiastical and cultural sway of Byzantium. Yet, their perceptions of the Byzantine artistic legacy, which contributed to the cultural identity of their homelands, rarely are included in such English-language symposia and publications.

ff14 island sanctuary workshop guide: Birds in the Ancient World from A to Z W. Geoffrey Arnott, 2007-09-12 Birds in the Ancient World from A to Z gathers together the ancient information available, listing all the names that ancient Greeks gave their birds and all their descriptions and analyses. W. Geoffrey Arnott identifies as many of them as possible in the light of modern ornithological studies. The ancient Greek bird names are transliterated into English script, and all that the ancients said about birds is presented in English. This book is accordingly the first complete discussion of ancient bird names that will be accessible to readers without ancient Greek. The only large-scale examination of ancient birds for seventy years, the book has an exhaustive bibliography (partly classical scholarship and partly ornithological) to encourage further study, and provides students and ornithologists with the definitive study of ancient birds.

ff14 island sanctuary workshop guide: The Fourth Marker L. Gibbons, 2013-05-14 With a supernatural undercurrent, The Fourth Marker is the story of an elderly man, Gabriel Townsend, whose spirit is being crushed between the metaphoric anvil of his pragmatic views and the falling hammer of his wife's pending death. The story revolves around a family, the Townsends, whose heritage is partly Native American. The United States' Indian Removal Act of 1830, which resulted in the Trail of Tears episode in American history, required all indigenous people, with few exceptions, to leave their tribal lands in the southeast and east, along the eastern seaboard. Some Lenape (Delaware) tribal members on the Delmarva Peninsula as well as other areas in the east, defied the government and remained on their ancestral lands, hiding from authorities in the Great Pocomoke Forest, outlying islands, and swamps on the southern peninsula.A conscious decision to hide in plain sight or not, they eventually intermarried and bred with local whites, African-Americans, and mulattoes. Many families whose ties to Delmarva date back a hundred years or more share a heritage with those aboriginal people; however, the prejudice and racial bias of a bygone era caused many to ignore – even deny – their lineage. In the story, while a child on the family farm during the Great Depression, Gabe Townsend rejected legends of his Native American ancestors and ignored miraculous cures of family members. Gabe's half-breed grandfather, Noopah, tried to teach him tribal legends and the old ways, explaining that, after most Indians had been killed or driven from their lands by the Army and settlers, tribal elders returned to their lands in spirit form after their deaths. They dwelled at a sacred hill on the family's land and protected their descendants from early death and white man's diseases.During those years, three family members were cured of life-threatening diseases, but Gabe's mother blindly credited their recoveries to the nascent field of modern medicine. After each recovery, a person of evil character and not of tribal blood disappeared, followed by the mysterious appearance of a wood marker on the sacred tribal hill. Yet, despite those events and Noopah's words, Gabe adhered to his mother's intractable views. Now facing the loss of his wife, he relives his childhood memories, guided by the spirit of his grandfather from beyond – well beyond – the grave. Finally understanding the truth of long ago, he decides to beg the tribal spirits to take his life in exchange for his wife's, aware that a fourth marker would signify his own life – and death. As Gabe's father noted, some understand only what they see; others see only what they understand. The Fourth Marker highlights this most human of vices against the backdrop of Native American legends with ample helpings of farm life during the Great Depression.

ff14 island sanctuary workshop guide: India's Contribution to World Thought & Culture Vivekananda Kendra Prakashan, 1970-10-01 The volume carries detailed articles on India's Culture contacts with Tibet, Central Asia, China, Japan, Burma, Indonesia, Japan, Afghanistan, Ceylon, Nepal, as well as far away sores of Siberia, Koria and the phillipines, Middle East, Africa, Europe and America. Shree Lokesh Chandra acted as the Eiditor of the Volume and Shri Devendra Swaroop, Sitaram Goel and Swarjya Prakash Gupta were the co-editors. Shri R. C. Majumdar the eminent historian, wrote the Foreword, commending the Volume. He said, contraty to the generally held belief, Hinduism has been taking its ideas across its borders and Puranic form of Brahminical religion was also spread in all parts of Asia. The Role of Swami Vivekananda, according to Dr. R. C. Majumdar, was to revive the spirit of ancient Hindus, though India had to wait for a full one thousand years for such a missionary to appear on its soil. The Volume itself, avers Dr. Majumdar, reminds us of our historical role. In the book, many articles give a broad survey of India's contacts with many stretches of regions and discuss specific items of culture such as medical sciences, art and architecture, geographical nomenclature borrowed from India, articles on India's maritime contacts, shipping and trade contacts with various countries are discussed. Dr. Majumdar concludes his note by saying that this volume is a testimony to the greatness of India. A survey of the articles reveals that in all there are 69 articles running to 705 pages with two special sections, one on Vivekananda Rock Memorial Committee and the other on Swami Vivekananda's life and mission. A number of colour pictures, black and while photographs and sketches and line drawings adorn its pages. The book was released 31.10.1970 by Shri G. S. Pathak Vice President of India at Kanyakumari as part of 8 week long celebrations (31/10 was the concluding day). Complimentary copies were sent to eminent persons and embassies. The Mysore University made an offer to translate the contents into Kannada.
