dj akademiks andrew tate interview: Bad with Money Gaby Dunn, 2019-01-01 “Humorous and forthright...[Gaby] Dunn makes facing money issues seem not only palatable but possibly even fun....Dunn’s book delivers.” —Publishers Weekly The beloved writer-comedian expands on her popular podcast with an engaging and empowering financial literacy book for Millennials and Gen Z. In the first episode of her “Bad With Money” podcast, Gaby Dunn asked patrons at a coffee shop two questions: First, what’s your favorite sex position? Everyone was game to answer, even the barista. Then, she asked how much money was in their bank accounts. People were aghast. “That’s a very personal question,” they insisted. And therein lies the problem. Dunn argues that our inability to speak honestly about money is our #1 barrier to understanding it, leading us to feel alone, ashamed and anxious, which in turns makes us feel even more overwhelmed by it. In Bad With Money, she reveals the legitimate, systemic reasons behind our feeling of helplessness when it comes to personal finance, demystifying the many signposts on the road to getting our financial sh*t together, like how to choose an insurance plan or buy a car, sign up for a credit card or take out student loans. She speaks directly to her audience, offering advice on how to make that #freelancelyfe work for you, navigate money while you date, and budget without becoming a Nobel-winning economist overnight. Even a topic as notoriously dry as money becomes hilarious and engaging in the hands of Dunn, who weaves her own stories with the perspectives of various comedians, artists, students, and more, arguing that—even without selling our bodies to science or suffering the indignity of snobby thrift shop buyers—we can all start taking control of our financial futures.

dj akademiks andrew tate interview: How to Ruin Everything George Watsky, 2016-06-14 A New York Times Bestseller Funny, subversive, and able to excavate such brutally honest sentences that you find yourself nodding your head in wonder and recognition. —Lin-Manuel Miranda, composer and lyricist of In the Heights and Hamilton: An American Musical Are you a sensible, universally competent individual? Are you tired of the crushing monotony of leaping gracefully from one lily pad of success to the next? Are you sick of doing everything right? In this brutally honest and humorous debut, musician and artist George Watsky chronicles the small triumphs over humiliation that make life bearable and how he has come to accept defeat as necessary to personal progress. The essays in How to Ruin Everything range from the absurd (how he became an international ivory smuggler) to the comical (his middle-school rap battle dominance) to the revelatory (his experiences with epilepsy), yet all are delivered with the type of linguistic dexterity and self-awareness that has won Watsky devoted fans across the globe. Alternately ribald and emotionally resonant, How to Ruin Everything announces a versatile writer with a promising career ahead.
dj akademiks andrew tate interview: The Forgotten First Keyshawn Johnson, Bob Glauber, 2021-09-21 The unknown story of the Black pioneers who collectively changed the face of the NFL in 1946. THE FORGOTTEN FIRST chronicles the lives of four incredible men, the racism they experienced as Black players entering a segregated sport, the burden of expectation they carried, and their many achievements, which would go on to affect football for generations to come. More than a year before Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball, there was another seismic moment in pro sports history. On March 21,1946, former UCLA star running back Kenny Washington—a teammate of Robinson's in college—signed a contract with the Los Angeles Rams. This ended one of the most shameful periods in NFL history, when African-American players were banned from league play. Washington would not be alone in serving as a pioneer for NFL integration. Just months after he joined the Rams, thanks to a concerted effort by influential Los Angeles political and civic leaders, the team signed Woody Strode, who played with both Washington and Robinson at UCLA in one of the most celebrated backfields in college sports history. And that same year, a little-known coach named Paul Brown of the fledgling Cleveland Browns signed running back Marion Motley and defensive lineman Bill Willis, thereby integrating a startup league that would eventually merge with the NFL. THE FORGOTTEN FIRST tells the story of one of the most significant cultural shifts in pro football history, as four men opened the door to opportunity and changed the sport forever.
dj akademiks andrew tate interview: Fly Fishing Memories of Angling Days J. R. Hartley, 2015-06-24 J. R. Hartley's best-known catch to date is the public imagination. Here are his elusive fishing recollections told in a series of sometimes vividly comic chronological cameos, ranging period and location from York school days in the early 1930s through memorable outings on stream, spate river and loch to startling conclusion half a lifetime later on a Scottish summer night. Complimented by his protege Patrick Benson's evocative illustrations and with his anglers expertise lightly threaded throughout, J. R.'s story will touch every fly fisherman's experience. But it is book too that will appeal to everyone even those who have never held a rod, for the engaging point that emerges of the ultimate reluctant hero.

dj akademiks andrew tate interview: Gender Policies in Japan and the United States: Comparing Women’s Movements, Rights and Politics J. Gelb, 2003-12-11 This book is the first to explore the similarities and differences in gender related policy making and outcomes in Japan and the United States. It focuses on the role of women's movements and other factors in determining policy. Three policies are examined: Equal employment, domestic violence and reproductive rights, with additional attention to gender equality policy in Japan and 'family friendly policy' in both nations. The analysis examines the significance of international feminism and new standards of gender equity - kansetsu gaiatsu - as a resource for Japanese feminists seeking policy reform, as well as new trends toward policy cooperation. The future role of the United States, long a leader in policy development for women, is critically analyzed, and Gelb suggests that American feminists and policymakers can learn important lessons from the experience of Japanese women's movements and efforts at influencing public policy.
dj akademiks andrew tate interview: The Mirror Dance Susan Krieger, 1983 A day draws to a close. Helen worries about when her children will get home; Gloria considers her day at work and, again, thoughts cross her mind about telling them at church that she is a lesbian; Gayle prepares for a meeting at the Women's Shelter...; Ellen gets ready for a class. Chip and Jessica plan another party at their house; Diana paces her kitchen, troubled that Meg still intends to see Bronwyn.... These are some of the people who come to life in this unique book about a lesbian community. It is an experiment, both in women's language and in social science method, and is composed of an interplay of voices that echo, again and again, themes of self and community, sameness and difference, merger and separation, loss and change. Although the method of presentation is unusual, the book is based on solid research. The author lived for a year with the community and then spent two intensive months interviewing 78 women who were either members of the community or importantly associated with it. The author began by addressing several basic questions about privacy that quickly led her to explore dilemmas of identity. In time an even more compelling problem emerged: the loss of sense of self, how it occurs and how it may be dealt with in a social setting. The nature of the community itself raised this issue because it was a community of likeness, intimacy, and ideology. It was also a stigmatized or deviant community--and of women, individuals with life experiences that tended to encourage the giving up of the self to others. The book is organized around particular kinds of situations and relationships in the community where conflicts concerning control over identity are especially prominent. It concludes with an essay on the author's method, Fiction and Social Science. Author note: Susan Krieger is Visiting Scholar, Department of Sociology, Stanford University.

dj akademiks andrew tate interview: Defining America Bill Ong Hing, 2012-10-22 From the earliest days of nationhood, the United States has determined who might enter the country and who might be naturalized. In this sweeping review of US immigration policies, Bill Ong Hing points to the racial, ethnic, and social struggles over who should be welcomed into the community of citizens. He shows how shifting visions of America have shaped policies governing asylum, exclusion, amnesty, and border policing. Written for a broad audience, Defining America Through Immigration Policy sets the continuing debates about immigration in the context of what value we as a people have assigned to cultural pluralism in various eras. Hing examines the competing visions of America reflected in immigration debates over the last 225 years. For instance, he compares the rationales and regulations that limited immigration of southern and eastern Europeans to those that excluded Asians in the nineteenth century. He offers a detailed history of the policies and enforcement procedures put in place to limit migration from Mexico, and indicts current border control measures as immoral. He probes into little discussed issues such as the exclusion of gays and lesbians and the impact of political considerations on the availability of amnesty and asylum to various groups of migrants. Hing's spirited discussion and sophisticated analysis will appeal to readers in a wide spectrum of academic disciplines as well as those general readers interested in America's on-going attempts to make one of many.

dj akademiks andrew tate interview: Private Lives in Renaissance Venice Patricia Fortini Brown, 2004-01-01 As the sixteenth century opened, members of the patriciate were increasingly withdrawing from trade, desiring to be seen as gentlemen in fact as well as gentlemen in name. The author considers why this was so and explores such wide-ranging themes as attitudes toward wealth and display, the articulation of family identity, the interplay between the public and the private, and the emergence of characteristically Venetian decorative practices and styles of art and architecture. Brown focuses new light on the visual culture of Venetian women - how they lived within, furnished, and decorated their homes; what spaces were allotted to them; what their roles and domestic tasks were; how they dressed; how they raised their children; and how they entertained. Bringing together both high arts and low, the book examines all aspects of Renaissance material culture.--BOOK JACKET.

dj akademiks andrew tate interview: Comeback Cities Paul Grogan, Tony Proscio, 2008-08-01 Comeback Cities shows how innovative, pragmatic tactics for ameliorating the nation's urban ills have produced results beyond anyone's expectations, reawakening America's toughest neighborhoods. In the past, big government and business working separately were unable to solve the inner city crisis. Today, a blend of public-private partnerships, grassroots nonprofit organizations, and a willingness to experiment characterize what is best among the new approaches to urban problem solving. Pragmatism, not dogma, has produced the charter-school movement and the police's new focus on quality of life issues. The new breed of big city mayors has welcomed business back into the city, stressed performance and results at city agencies, downplayed divisive racial politics, and cracked down on symptoms of social disorder. As a consequence, America's inner cities are becoming vital communities once again.
dj akademiks andrew tate interview: Compassionate Capitalism Marc Benioff, 2009-01-22 You'll learn from this compelling book, coauthored by Marc and veteran journalist Karen Southwick, how important philanthropy is and what kind of positive messages it sends to your employees and to outside stakeholders. You'll discover how some of the best practitioners of good community service - among them IBM, Timberland, Hewlett-Packard, Lens Crafters, Wells Fargo, and many others - have put their ideals into practice. The examples of salesforce.com and smaller companies included in the book will demonstrate that giving back is not a matter of size nor of longevity, but of early and sustained commitment. That commitment must come from the executives of the company, particularly the CEO, and extend down to the newest employee. It must be reinforced at company meetings and integrated within the corporation. I'll put it bluntly: We want to get companies that don't give to start giving. People can't take it with them. Salesforce.com is a wonderful model, because, starting at the top, Marc has the passion. If you have passion and let your people become involved, the sky's the limit on what the company can do.
dj akademiks andrew tate interview: South Bronx Rising Jill Jonnes, 2022-10-04 Thirty-five years after this landmark of urban history first captured the rise, fall, and rebirth of a once-thriving New York City borough—ravaged in the 1970s and ’80s by disinvestment and fires, then heroically revived and rebuilt in the 1990s by community activists—Jill Jonnes returns to chronicle the ongoing revival of the South Bronx. Though now globally renowned as the birthplace of hip-hop, the South Bronx remains America’s poorest urban congressional district. In this new edition, we meet the present generation of activists who are transforming their communities with the arts and greening, notably the restoration of the Bronx River. For better or worse, real estate investors have noticed, setting off new gentrification struggles.

dj akademiks andrew tate interview: Love Mary Evans, 2002-12-13 Since the end of the eighteenth century, the pursuit of 'true love' has been enshrined in the expectations of Western societies. We regard this pursuit as our right, and organize our lives around it. However, the possibility that love is becoming more difficult to achieve in the West has begun to attract considerable attention. The consensus is that love is both deeply desirable and extremely difficult to find. This highly original book explores two aspects of the nature of the apparently socially essential 'glue' of love. The first theme concerns the sources of our ideas about love: where the concept originated and, most importantly, what its relationship has been to morality and moral systems. The second theme is our determination to find love: whatever the social and personal costs, the desire for identification with another person drives us to impossible expectations and occasionally damaging alternatives. In a compelling critique, this book rejects the high romantic version of love as well as what could be described as a contractual version of love. In their place, it describes a love that depends upon reasoned care and commitment and argues that we should abandon love in its romanticized and commercialized form.
dj akademiks andrew tate interview: Gender and Migration Caroline Sweetman, 1998-01-01 The articles in this collection explore the vast array of different reasons for women and men moving within and outside their native countries, whether it be for employment, upon marriage, or in the midst of conflict. The authors, who include Uma Kothari and Emma Crewe, Ben Rogaly and Alex Jones, stress the importance of seeing an individual migrant in her or his context as a member of a social network, spanning different locations. Understanding these links means that migration can be seen as part of a wider strategy for making a living.
dj akademiks andrew tate interview: Gender Relations in Forest Societies in Asia Govind Kelkar, Dev Nathan, Pierre Walter, 2003-12-06 Extrait de la couverture : Of the numerous available studies on forest management in Asia, only a few mention the role of women or pay attention to gender relations. Even projects are largely designed in terms of households or communities where men are the decision-makers and the owners or managers of forests. This important volume views gender relations as a crucial factor in the management of land and forests, and maintains that the continuing invisibility of women in these areas only compounds poverty, shortages, and the increased workloads of forest-based women. Based on fieldwork conducted in several forest societies in China, Thailand, India and Malaysia, the contributors explore the changes in gender relations within indigenous communities, from matrilineal and/or gender egalitarian systems to ones where male domination is the norm.
