financial aid cal poly pomona: The Road to En-dor E. H. Jones, Neil Gaiman, 2014-05-01 The incredible true story of two WWI POWs who used amateur magic to convince their captors that they were in touch with the spirit world Captured during World War I, Lieutenant E. H. Jones, a Welsh officer in the Indian Army, and Lieutenant C. W. Hill, an Australian serving in the R.A.F., were prisoners of war at the Yozgad prison camp in Turkey. Duty-bound as officers to attempt to escape, Jones sensed that what had previously been the harmless fun of fooling around with a homemade Ouija board could be turned into something much more productive. Playing on the credulous nature of their captors, Hill and Jones weaved an incredibly elaborate plot, hatched to plan their escape. Acting as mediums for the Ouija board, they attempted to convince their captors that they were gradually descending into insanity—which, had it been true, would have seen them repatriated. A true story of bravery, dedication, and extreme hardship, this book is a fascinating insight account of a daring escapade. As well as containing astonishing original materials including photographs, letters, and postcards, the book contains a preface by the author's grandson, as well as a foreword by Neil Gaiman who is linked to a film which is currently in pre-production. A free companion ebook is available to download from the Hesperus website (www.hesperuspress.com/the-road-to-en-dor) which includes back stories on the characters, maps, letters, and coded messages; and an exclusive short story written by Jones.

It presents strategies to achieve CO2 reductions, with an emphasis on control of energy flows through the building envelope and passive heating and cooling strategies. This new, revised edition is updated throughout, and includes a new chapter on building simulations.

financial aid cal poly pomona: Keeping Races in Their Places Anthony W. Orlando, 2021-11-29 A book perfect for this moment –Katherine M. O’Regan, Former Assistant Secretary, US Department of Housing and Urban Development More than fifty years after the passage of the Fair Housing Act, American cities remain divided along the very same lines that this landmark legislation explicitly outlawed. Keeping Races in Their Places tells the story of these lines—who drew them, why they drew them, where they drew them, and how they continue to circumscribe residents’ opportunities to this very day. Weaving together sophisticated statistical analyses of more than a century’s worth of data with an engaging, accessible narrative that brings the numbers to life, Keeping Races in Their Places exposes the entrenched effects of redlining on American communities. This one-of-a-kind contribution to the real estate and urban economics literature applies the author’s original geographic information systems analyses to historical maps to reveal redlining’s causal role in shaping today’s cities. Spanning the era from the Great Migration to the Great Recession, Keeping Races in Their Places uncovers the roots of the Black-white wealth gap, the subprime lending crisis, and today’s lack of affordable housing in maps created by banks nearly a century ago. Most of all, it offers hope that with the latest scholarly tools we can pinpoint how things went wrong—and what we must do to make them right.
financial aid cal poly pomona: The Pig Book Citizens Against Government Waste, 2013-09-17 The federal government wastes your tax dollars worse than a drunken sailor on shore leave. The 1984 Grace Commission uncovered that the Department of Defense spent $640 for a toilet seat and $436 for a hammer. Twenty years later things weren't much better. In 2004, Congress spent a record-breaking $22.9 billion dollars of your money on 10,656 of their pork-barrel projects. The war on terror has a lot to do with the record $413 billion in deficit spending, but it's also the result of pork over the last 18 years the likes of: - $50 million for an indoor rain forest in Iowa - $102 million to study screwworms which were long ago eradicated from American soil - $273,000 to combat goth culture in Missouri - $2.2 million to renovate the North Pole (Lucky for Santa!) - $50,000 for a tattoo removal program in California - $1 million for ornamental fish research Funny in some instances and jaw-droppingly stupid and wasteful in others, The Pig Book proves one thing about Capitol Hill: pork is king!
financial aid cal poly pomona: Tributes in Honor of Richard K. Emmerson Deirdre Carter, Elina Gertsman, Karlyn Griffith, 2021-06-24 This interdisciplinary collection celebrates the scholarship of Richard K. Emmerson, one of the most prominent medievalists of his generation. With contributions to the history of medieval literature, drama, theology, and art, this anthology not only showcases the fields with which Emmerson's own work engaged, but also demonstrates the fruitfulness of the cross-disciplinary approach that has come to define these fields. Although the essays employ a broad range of source material--from devotional texts to royal chronicles and from architectural sculpture to illuminated manuscripts--the book focuses specifically on four distinct but related topics: word-image relationships, eschatology, identity, and moral argument. The contributions, written by Emmerson's colleagues and former students, speak to the importance of interdisciplinarity and demonstrate the profound influence of Emmerson's work on the rich field of medieval studies.
financial aid cal poly pomona: Manufacturing Hope and Despair Ricardo D. Stanton-Salazar, 2001 Relying on a wealth of ethnographic and statistical data, this groundbreaking volume documents the many constraints and social forces that prevent Mexican-origin adolescents from constructing the kinds of networks that provide access to important forms of social support. Special attention is paid to those forms of support privileged youth normally receive and working-class youth do not, such as expert guidance regarding college opportunities. The author also reveals how some working-class ethnic minority youth become the exception, weaving social webs that promote success in school as well as empowering forms of resiliency. In both cases, the role of social networks in shaping young people’s chances is illuminated. “In this badly needed alternative to the individualism that pervades most debates about American education, Stanton-Salazar explores how Latino teenagers’ lives are embedded within social networks from home, community, and school. This grand work shows how school programs can confound or can draw from the strengths of such networks to build better lives for all.” —Bruce J. Biddle, Professor Emeritus of Psychology and Sociology, University of Missouri–Columbia “A beautifully written and inspiring book that announces a new generation of Mexican/Latino scholars. . . . This is a book which tells the tale about Mexican/Latino adolescents but, in reality, it is a book about how working-class adolescent life is socially constructed, defined, and elaborated in the United States. An eloquent rendering, indeed.” —Carlos G. Vélez-Ibáñez, Presidential Chair in Anthropology, University of California, Riverside “Using creative theorizing and rigorous methodology, Manufacturing Hope and Despair illuminates brilliantly the supposed mystery of persistent race/class inequities in American society.” —Walter R. Allen, Professor, University of California, Los Angeles

Covering both building, landscape and green infrastructure design and management, detailed consideration is given to how the building sector, the biggest player in the energy use equation, can minimize energy demand while providing measurable gains for productivity, health, and the environment. With a focus on the environmental context, the reader will understand how sustainable design merges the natural, minimum resource conditioning solutions of the past (daylight, solar heat, and natural ventilation) with the innovative technologies including nature-based solutions of the present. The desired result is an integrated “intelligent” and as socially “just as possible” system that supports individual control with expert negotiation for resource consciousness.

financial aid cal poly pomona: Feminisms in Motion Jessica Hoffmann, Daria Yudacufski, 2018-10-16 In recent years, feminism has been at the forefront of social criticism in the United States, but the mainstream face of feminism is still typically white and often focused on gender issues to the exclusion of race, class, and almost everything else. Meanwhile, there are long and rich traditions of women-of-color-centered feminisms that acknowledge all systems of power as connected, and recognize how ending one form of violence entails the transformation of society on multiple fronts. From 2007 to 2017, a small, Los Angeles-based independent magazine called make/shift published some of the most inspiring feminist voices of the decade, articulating ideas from the grassroots and amplifying feminist voices on immigration, state violence, climate change, and other issues. Feminisms in Motion offers highlights from 10 years of make/shift magazine, providing a wide-ranging look at contemporary intersectional feminist thought and action. We are living in a moment of mounting racist violence, xenophobia, income inequality, climate displacement, and war. Intersectional feminism has been creating and pointing toward solutions to these problems for generations. Feminisms in Motion offers ideas, critique, and inspiration from diverse feminists from Los Angles, to India, to Palestine, who are pointing toward a world where all people can thrive.

As an accessible malleable form of recreation its appeal can be explained by a genius loci elicited from direct engagement & a culture of play. What landscape & cultural characteristics of disc golf make it attractive? Participants in the LA region were given semi-structured interviews at 4 popular courses representing 4 distinct typologies to discover preferences. Demographic results and analysis of interviews revealed an overall reluctance to travel, but a desire for variety. Interviewees also expressed overall enthusiasm for courses developed on underutilized post-industrial sites. Camaraderie at each site was shown to be uniquely shaped by rule-creation through play forms (Callois1961); leveling the field for new players, or creating complexity/challenge for experienced players. Guidelines & recommendations are given.

The poems contained in Farewell Clay Dove have an intriguing simplicity that harmonizes with their richness. These poems show remarkable insight into the Falco's subjective world.Sophia Falco's world is a dreamy land of swirling colors - until it is upended. Farewell Clay Dove is a meditation on mania, when every levitation brings an inevitable fall. The contrast between idyllic nature scenes and harsh reality propels the book forward on a wave of bright color and intense perception. Dandelions become astronauts and skyscrapers grow roots, as the speaker moves in and out of reality, and eventually into the psych ward, where they must confront the workings of their own mind.Sophia Falco's new book is wonderful!   financial aid cal poly pomona: How to Run a College Brian C. Mitchell, W. Joseph King, 2018-01-15 How can colleges stay relevant in the twenty-first century? Residential colleges are the foundation on which US higher education is based. These institutions possess storied traditions fondly cherished by students, alumni, and faculty. There is no denying, however, that all colleges today struggle with changing consumer preferences, high sticker prices, and aging infrastructure. Technological and pedagogical alternatives—not to mention growing political pressure—present complex challenges. What can colleges and smaller universities do to stay relevant in today’s educational and economic climate? In their concise guide, How to Run a College, Brian C. Mitchell and W. Joseph King analyze how colleges operate. Widely experienced as trustees, administrators, and faculty, they understand that colleges must update their practices, monetize their assets, and focus on core educational strategies in order to build strong institutions. Mitchell and King offer a frank yet optimistic vision for how colleges can change without losing their fundamental strengths. To survive and become sustainable, they must be centers of dynamic learning, as well as economic engines able to power regional, state, and national economies. Rejecting the notion that American colleges are holdovers from a bygone time, How to Run a College shows instead that they are centers of experimentation and innovation that heavily influence higher education not only in the United States but also worldwide.

financial aid cal poly pomona: The Politics of Performance Funding for Higher Education Kevin J. Dougherty, Rebecca S. Natow, 2015-05-15 One of the striking ways in which state governments have pursued better performance in public higher education is through the use of performance funding. Performance funding involves tying state support directly to institutional performance on specific outcomes such as rates of graduation and job placement. The principal rationale for performance funding has been that the introduction of market-like forces will prod institutions to become more efficient, delivering more bang for the buck. Kevin Dougherty, an expert on state performance funding, finds its development puzzling. First, despite the great interest in it, only half the states have ever adopted performance funding for higher education. Moreover, of the states that did adopt performance funding, over half later dropped it. Finally, in the states that have retained performance funding over a long period of time, their programs have undergone considerable changes in the amount of state funding they devote to performance funding and in the content of the indicators they use to allocate that funding. In spite of this, performance funding continues to attract interest as a way of improving educational outcomes. This book, based on an extensive ten-state study, aims to shed light on the social and political factors affecting the origins, evolution, and demise of these programs--
