The case scenarios illustrate actual experiences faced by a diverse group of general and adapted physical educators representing various contexts from self-contained APE classes and inclusive GPE (elementary, middle, and high school; urban, rural, and suburban) to youth sports, community recreation, and health club settings. When reading the book, pre-service and in-service teachers will be exposed to the issues facing physical educators as changes in federal law further mandate the inclusion of students with disabilities in general physical education classes and after-school sports. Identifying with the situations and characters in the cases will encourage readers to explore such issues as diversity and disability, attitude and ethics, behavior management and conflict resolution, and inclusion strategies. Questions following each case prompt readers to identify the critical issues and how the physical education professionals dealt with those issues, and then determine whether they would have handled the issues in the same way. Analyzing and discussing the cases will enable readers to formulate strategies for dealing with related issues and better prepare them to provide safe, satisfying, and successful physical activity experiences to individuals with varied abilities.

  doctor of physical education: Towards a Compulsory Curriculum John White, 2012 Written prior to the introduction of the national curriculum, this volume argued for precisely that: a broad framework of a compulsory education at national level for all schools. The author considers the question of the content of his proposed compulsory curriculum in terms of principles derived from a fundamental ethical position and from an analysis of kinds of human activity that seeks to establish important educational priorities. The discussion covers arguments concerning intrinsically worthwhile activities, the need for a practical component of the curriculum and the priority that humanistic studies should have. It puts forward a case for a new concept of voluntary education, partly on the model of the Pioneer organizations of Eastern Europe, to supplement the compulsory curriculum.
  doctor of physical education: Women Doctors in Weimar and Nazi Germany Melissa Kravetz, 2019-03-11 Examining how German women physicians gained a foothold in the medical profession during the Weimar and Nazi periods, Women Doctors in Weimar and Nazi Germany reveals the continuity in rhetoric, strategy, and tactics of female doctors who worked under both regimes. Melissa Kravetz explains how and why women occupied particular fields within the medical profession, how they presented themselves in their professional writing, and how they reconciled their medical perspectives with their views of the Weimar and later the Nazi state. Focusing primarily on those women who were members of the Bund Deutscher Ärztinnen (League of German Female Physicians or BDÄ), this study shows that female physicians used maternalist and, to a lesser extent, eugenic arguments to make a case for their presence in particular medical spaces. They emphasized gender difference to claim that they were better suited than male practitioners to care for women and children in a range of new medical spaces. During the Weimar Republic, they laid claim to marriage counselling centres, school health reform, and the movements against alcoholism, venereal disease, and prostitution. In the Nazi period, they emphasized their importance to the Bund Deutscher Mädels (League of German Girls), the Reichsmütterdienst (Reich Mothers' Service), and breast milk collection efforts. Women doctors also tried to instil middle-class values into their working-class patients while fashioning themselves as advocates for lower-class women.
