fl spring training map: Havana Hardball César Brioso, 2015-10-13 In February 1947, the most memorable season in the history of the Cuban League finished with a dramatic series win by Almendares against its rival, Habana. As the celebration spread through the streets of Havana and across Cuba, the Brooklyn Dodgers were beginning spring training on the island. One of the Dodgers' minor league players was Jackie Robinson. He was on the verge of making his major-league debut in the United States, an event that would fundamentally change sports--and America. To avoid harassment from the white crowds in Florida during this critical preseason, the Dodgers relocated their spring training to Cuba, where black and white teammates had played side by side since 1900. It was also during this time that Major League Baseball was trying its hardest to bring the outlaw Cuban League under the control of organized baseball. As the Cubans fought to stay independent, Robinson worked to earn a roster spot on the Dodgers in the face of discrimination from his future teammates. Havana Hardball captures the excitement of the Cuban League's greatest pennant race and the anticipation of the looming challenge to MLB's color barrier. Illuminating one of the sport's most pivotal seasons, veteran journalist César Brioso brings together a rich mix of worlds as the heyday of Latino baseball converged with one of the most socially meaningful events in U.S. history. |
fl spring training map: The Cactus League Emily Nemens, 2020-02-04 Named a Best Book of 2020 by NPR and Lit Hub. A Los Angeles Times Bestseller. A New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice In The Cactus League [Emily Nemens] provides her readers with what amounts to a miniature, self-enclosed world that is funny and poignant and lovingly observed. --Charles McGrath, The New York Times Book Review An explosive, character-driven odyssey through the world of baseball Jason Goodyear is the star outfielder for the Los Angeles Lions, stationed with the rest of his team in the punishingly hot Arizona desert for their annual spring training. Handsome, famous, and talented, Goodyear is nonetheless coming apart at the seams. And the coaches, writers, wives, girlfriends, petty criminals, and diehard fans following his every move are eager to find out why—as they hide secrets of their own. Humming with the energy of a ballpark before the first pitch, Emily Nemens's The Cactus League unravels the tightly connected web of people behind a seemingly linear game. Narrated by a sportscaster, Goodyear’s story is interspersed with tales of Michael Taylor, a batting coach trying to stay relevant; Tamara Rowland, a resourceful spring-training paramour, looking for one last catch; Herb Allison, a legendary sports agent grappling with his decline; and a plethora of other richly drawn characters, all striving to be seen as the season approaches. It’s a journey that, like the Arizona desert, brims with both possibility and destruction. Anchored by an expert knowledge of baseball’s inner workings, Emily Nemens's The Cactus League is a propulsive and deeply human debut that captures a strange desert world that is both exciting and unforgiving, where the most crucial games are the ones played off the field. |
fl spring training map: Ball Four Jim Bouton, 2012-03-20 The 50th Anniversary edition of “the book that changed baseball” (NPR), chosen by Time magazine as one of the “100 Greatest Non-Fiction” books. When Ball Four was published in 1970, it created a firestorm. Bouton was called a Judas, a Benedict Arnold, and a “social leper” for having violated the “sanctity of the clubhouse.” Baseball commissioner Bowie Kuhn tried to force Bouton to sign a statement saying the book wasn’t true. Ballplayers, most of whom hadn’t read it, denounced the book. It was even banned by a few libraries. Almost everyone else, however, loved Ball Four. Fans liked discovering that athletes were real people—often wildly funny people. David Halberstam, who won a Pulitzer for his reporting on Vietnam, wrote a piece in Harper’s that said of Bouton: “He has written . . . a book deep in the American vein, so deep in fact that it is by no means a sports book.” Today Ball Four has taken on another role—as a time capsule of life in the sixties. “It is not just a diary of Bouton’s 1969 season with the Seattle Pilots and Houston Astros,” says sportswriter Jim Caple. “It’s a vibrant, funny, telling history of an era that seems even further away than four decades. To call it simply a ‘tell all book’ is like describing The Grapes of Wrath as a book about harvesting peaches in California.” Includes a new foreword by Jim Bouton's wife, Paula Kurman “An irreverent, best-selling book that angered baseball’s hierarchy and changed the way journalists and fans viewed the sports world.” —The Washington Post |
fl spring training map: Uncle Robbie Jack Kavanagh, Norman Lee Macht, 1999 Hall of Fame member Wilbert Robinson began his career as a catcher. As a Baltimore Oriole in the 1890s the hard-nosed but congenial receiver joined John McGraw, Wee Willie Keeler, and other greats on the roughest team of the game’s toughest era. He went on to make a reputation with McGraw’s New York Giants as a great developer of pitchers. Subsequently he took over the Brooklyn Dodgers, quickly turning them into pennant winners and gradually becoming the borough’s beloved Uncle Robbie. |

fl spring training map: Blackout Chris Lamb, 2006-03-01 Chronicles the story of Jackie Robinson's first spring training during 1946, a time when America was struggling with racism and segregation, as well as with the impact of the Second World War, documenting the player's ordeal on and off the field, the reaction of the black and white communities, the influence of the press, and Robinson's own determination and anxieties. |

fl spring training map: Money Games David M Carter, 2010-11-09 “A compelling perspective on the evolution of sports business . . . provides an excellent roadmap to maximizing the benefits and minimizing the pitfalls.” —David Stern, NBA Commissioner The businesses behind Dubai Sports City, the branding of David Beckham, and the popularity of fantasy sports leagues are unmistakable indicators that the sports and the entertainment industries are quickly becoming one and the same. This rapid convergence has been key to the sports business industry’s continued growth and financial success. Money Games not only analyzes how industry stakeholders have monetized this convergence, but also answers this core question: how can the sports business continue to profit from the blurring of sports and entertainment? Author David M. Carter considers a wide array of implications for television content, video gaming, athlete branding, the Internet, mobile technology, gambling, sports-anchored real estate development, venue technology, and corporate marketing—in short, those areas where business opportunities exist now that sports and entertainment have become one. “Fans, sports and media executives, and even investors will find that Carter’s examination . . . of the changing landscape of sports and entertainment helps them understand their own experiences.” —Stephen A. Greyser, Harvard Business School “An invaluable resource for stakeholders hoping to monetize sports as entertainment.” —Kenneth L. Shropshire, Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and author of The Business of Sports Agents “The strategies and tactics that all the players will want—from the boardroom to the locker room—can be found in Money Games.” —John Nendick, Ernst & Young Global Media & Entertainment Industry Leader “Identifies the challenges facing the various sports leagues in delivering fans what they want.” —Allan H. fl spring training map: The Umpire Strikes Back Ron Luciano, David Fisher, 2022-04-26 Here is Ron Luciano, the funniest ump ever to call balls and strikes. A huge and awesome legend who leaps and spins and shoots players with an index finger while screaming OUTOUTOUT!!! Now baseball's flamboyant fan-on-the-field comes out from behind the mask to call the game as he really sees it. There’s the day the automatic umpire debuted at home plate—and struck out. The time Rod Carew stole home twice in one inning, and Earl Weaver stole second base—and took it back to the dugout. The pitch Tommy John dropped on the mound, which Luciano called a strike. And there’s the fantastic phantom double play, the impossible frozen ice-ball theory, and, another first, Luciano picking Harmon Killebrew off second base. From brawls to catcalls, from dugout jokes to on-the-field pratfalls to one-of-a-kind conversations with baseball’s greats, Ron Luciano, the only umpire who confessed to missing calls, takes a few grand slam swings of his own. It is baseball at its best. |

fl spring training map: Tales from the Phillies Dugout Rich Westcott, 2006 In the 120-year history of the Philadelphia Phillies there is one unavoidable description of the franchise - it was often last, but seldom dull. This is a club, after all, that once had a lefthanded catcher named Jack Clements. Bill Hulen was a shortstop. He was also lefthanded. They had a pitcher who was aptly named Boom Boom Beck. Third baseman Mike Schmidt once tried to disguise himself by wearing a wig onto the field. The Phillies, the oldest, continuous one-city franchise in professional sports, surely have suffered more indignities than most other teams, as detailed in the updated softcover edition of Tales from the Phillies Dugout. No club has ever finished in last place 29 times, as the Phillies have. What other team has ever lost 23 games in a row, or blew a pennant after holding a six-and-a-half game lead with 12 games left to play? What other team hit .315 for the season, but lost 102 games while finishing 40 games out of first place? Fans should look at it this way, however - the Phillies are a team that has won a World Series and no less than five National League pennants. All of these things have been accomplished since 1883, too.The Phillies might also be among the league leaders in bizarre incidents and unusual characters. Some of the personalities fans will meet in Tales from the Phillies Dugout include John Kruk, Tim McCarver, Bob Uecker, Russ Meyer, and Jay Johnstone. All played with the Phillies. So did world-famous evangelist Billy Sunday, NFL Hall of Fame coach Greasy Neale, and a guy who did some managing named Casey Stengel. Some of their experiences are told here. Many of the stories head in the direction of being humorous, a few more serious. Some are even tragic. All in all, though, the updated softcover edition of Tales from the Phillies Dugout is a book about a franchise that has overflowed with colorful characters, and the strange, the odd, and the outrageous events with which they have been connected. |

fl spring training map: Wicked Curve John C. Skipper, 2014-11-26 When in 1911 Phillies pitcher Grover Cleveland Alexander set the National League record for wins by a rookie (28), it was a sign of things to come. Alexander went on to win 373 games over his 20-year career, the third highest total in major league history, and he would lead the league in ERA four times, shutouts seven times, complete games six times, and wins six times. But he also became a deeply troubled man. After the Shell-Shocked pitcher returned from World War I, he would battle alcoholism, epilepsy, and personal demons that damaged his reputation and proved disastrous for his life outside of baseball. This biography sheds new light on the pitcher and the man, focusing on Alexander's personal life, especially his complex relationship with his wife, Aimee, as well as their marriages and divorces. His Hall of Fame career, wartime service, and long decline are also documented. |

fl spring training map: GIS Cartography Gretchen N. Peterson, 2014-05-23 In the five years since the publication of the first edition of A Guide to Effective Map Design, cartography and software have become further intertwined. However, the initial motivation for publishing the first edition is still valid: many GISers enter the field without so much as one hour of design instruction in their formal education. Yet they are then tasked with creating one the most effective, easily recognized communication tools: a map. See What’s New in the Second Edition Projection theory Hexagonal binning Big Data point density maps Scale dependent map design 3D building modeling Digital cartography and its best practices Updated graphics and references Study questions and lab exercises at the end of each chapter In this second edition of a bestseller, author Gretchen Peterson takes a don’t let the technology get in the way approach to the presentation, focusing on the elements of good design, what makes a good map, and how to get there, rather than specific software tools. She provides a reference that you can thumb through time and again as you create your maps. Copiously illustrated, the second edition explores novel concepts that kick-start your pursuit of map-making excellence. The book doesn’t just teach you how to design and create maps, it teaches you how to design and create better maps. |

Very little technical help is available to small agencies that are responsible for managing these roads. Gravel road maintenance has traditionally been more of an art than a science and very few formal standards exist. This manual contains guidelines to help answer the questions that arise concerning gravel road maintenance such as: What is enough surface crown? What is too much? What causes corrugation? The information is as nontechnical as possible without sacrificing clear guidelines and instructions on how to do the job right. |

fl spring training map: School Moms Laura Pappano, 2024-01-30 An investigative study of the far-right’s attack on education and an on-the-ground look at the parent activist battle, on either side of the debate, to control the future of public schools For well over a century, public schools have been a non-partisan gathering place and vital center of civic life in America—but something has changed. In School Moms, journalist Laura Pappano explores the on-the-ground story of how public schools across the country have become ground zero in a cultural and political war as the far-right have made efforts to seek power over school boards. Pappano argues that the rise of parent activism is actually the culmination of efforts that began in the 1990s after campaigns to stop sex education largely fizzled. Recent efforts to make public schools more responsive and inclusive, as well as the pandemic, have offered openings the far-right have been waiting for to organize and sway parents, who are frustrated and exhausted by remote learning, objections by teachers’ unions, and shifting directives from school leaders. Groups like Moms for Liberty and Parents Defending Education are organizing against revised history curricula they have dubbed as “CRT,” banning books, pressing for “Don’t Say Gay” laws, and asserting “parental rights” to gain control over the review of classroom materials. On the other side, progressive groups like Support Our Schools and Red, Wine & Blue are mobilizing parents to counter such moves. Combining on-the-ground reporting with research and expert interviews, School Moms will take a hard look at where these battles are happening, what is at stake, and why it matters for the future of our schools. |
