eap training program cost: A Ready and Resilient Workforce for the Department of Homeland Security Committee on the Department of Homeland Security Workforce Resilience, Board on Health Sciences Policy, Institute of Medicine, 2013-12-10 The responsibilities of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) range from preventing foreign and domestic terrorist attacks; securing the nation's borders; safeguarding transportation systems; responding to natural disasters; nuclear detection; and more. Created in 2002 from a merger that rapidly incorporated parts of eight cabinet departments and 22 government agencies, DHS has struggled to integrate its numerous components and their unique cultures. While DHS is very accomplished at performing its many missions, the nature of the DHS work environment is inherently stressful, and employees suffer from low morale. A Ready and Resilient Workforce for the Department of Homeland Security: Protecting America's Front Line reviews current workforce resilience efforts, identifies gaps, and provides recommendations for a 5-year strategy to improve DHSTogether, the current DHS workforce resilience program. This report stresses the importance of strong leadership, communication, measurement, and evaluation in the organization and recommends content for a 5-year plan that will promote centralized strategic direction and resource investment to improve readiness and resilience at the department. While all DHS component agencies share a common mission, each have distinct roles with different stressors attached, making implementation of an organization-wide resilience or wellness program difficult. The recommendations of A Ready and Resilient Workforce for the Department of Homeland Security outline how DHS can focus its efforts on creating a common culture of workforce readiness and resilience, while recognizing the distinct, proud, celebrated cultures of its component agencies.

eap training program cost: Alcoholism and Drug Abuse in the Workplace Walter F. Scanlon, 1991-06-30 Deteriorating job performance resulting from alcohol and drug dependency requires special handling and specific skills. Developing these skills and learning what to do with them are not difficult tasks. Employee assistance program professionals provide such training for key personnel. Focusing on strategic intervention designed to help employees with personal problems that interfere with job performance, Walter Scanlon describes the functions and benefits of employee assistance programs (EAPs), discusses their training and consultation objectives, and shows how EAPs effectively identify and address such problems. An important EAP goal is to reduce both the incidence of alcohol- and drug-related problems and the costs associated with them. EAPs target employees whose work performance has deteriorated because of chemical dependency or other personal problems. Scanlon has divided his discussion of EAPs into seven workable segments: the concept of EAP; EAP history; the history of drug and alcohol use; current drug and alcohol use in the United States; the legal, corporate, societal, and individual influences on rehabilitation and EAP; governmental influences including the Drug Free Workplace Act and mandatory drug screening; and cost considerations, including the trend toward managed health care.

To this end, data were collected on firefighter fatalities between 1990 and 2000. (For further information, see the Methodology section or the Appendix.) Using this analysis, better targeted prevention strategies can be developed in keeping with the USFA's goal to reduce firefighter deaths 25 percent by 2005.   eap training program cost: Health and Safety Needs of Older Workers Institute of Medicine, National Research Council, Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education, Board on Behavioral, Cognitive, and Sensory Sciences, Committee on the Health and Safety Needs of Older Workers, 2004-02-26 Mirroring a worldwide phenomenon in industrialized nations, the U.S. is experiencing a change in its demographic structure known as population aging. Concern about the aging population tends to focus on the adequacy of Medicare and Social Security, retirement of older Americans, and the need to identify policies, programs, and strategies that address the health and safety needs of older workers. Older workers differ from their younger counterparts in a variety of physical, psychological, and social factors. Evaluating the extent, causes, and effects of these factors and improving the research and data systems necessary to address the health and safety needs of older workers may significantly impact both their ability to remain in the workforce and their well being in retirement. Health and Safety Needs of Older Workers provides an image of what is currently known about the health and safety needs of older workers and the research needed to encourage social polices that guarantee older workers a meaningful share of the nation's work opportunities.
