education in plato's republic: The Allegory of the Cave Plato, 2021-01-08 The Allegory of the Cave, or Plato's Cave, was presented by the Greek philosopher Plato in his work Republic (514a–520a) to compare the effect of education (παιδεία) and the lack of it on our nature. It is written as a dialogue between Plato's brother Glaucon and his mentor Socrates, narrated by the latter. The allegory is presented after the analogy of the sun (508b–509c) and the analogy of the divided line (509d–511e). All three are characterized in relation to dialectic at the end of Books VII and VIII (531d–534e). Plato has Socrates describe a group of people who have lived chained to the wall of a cave all of their lives, facing a blank wall. The people watch shadows projected on the wall from objects passing in front of a fire behind them, and give names to these shadows. The shadows are the prisoners' reality. |

Smith presents an original interpretation of the Republic, considering it to be a book about knowledge and education. Over the course of Summoning Knowledge in Plato's Republic, he argues for four main theses. Firstly, the Republic is not just a work that has a lot to say about education; it is a book that depicts Socrates as attempting to engage his interlocutors in such a way as to help to educate them and also engages us, the readers, in a way that helps to educate us. Secondly, Plato does not suppose that education, properly understood, should have as its primary aim putting knowledge into souls that do not already have it. Instead, the education Plato discusses, represents occurring between Socrates and his interlocutors, and hopes to achieve in his readers is one that aims to arouse the power of knowledge in us and then to begin to train that power always to engage with what is more real, rather than what is less real. Adaptation of Truth considered Generally. We may now express Plato's principle of method in the moral and religious education of the young through literature in this summary way: The truth must be adapted to their capacity for assimilation; but the foundation thus laid must be one which will support the superstructure which maturer knowledge will erect. We have seen that this is a principle which teachers will be wise in adopting. But both the principle that all communication of ideas must be adapted to the mind of the recipient,2 and the warning which it involves, that in such adaptation there is danger lest the truth should be irretrievably distorted, seem to be applicable to all subjects of instruction. We shall appreciate the particular application of it better if we consider it in its more general aspects. education in plato's republic: Poetic Justice Jill Frank, 2018-01-20 When Plato wrote his dialogues, written texts were disseminated primarily by performance and oral recitation. Literacy, however, was spreading, and Frank is the first to point out that the dialogues offer two distinct ways of learning to read. One method treats learning to read as being led to true beliefs about letters and syllables by an authoritative teacher. The other method, recommended by Socrates, focuses on learning to read by trial and error, and on the opinions learners come to have based on their own fallible experiences. In all the dialogues in which these methods appear, learning to read is likened to coming to know, and the significant differences between the two methods are at the center of Frank's argument. When learning to read is understood as a practice of assimilating true beliefs by an authoritative teacher, it reflects the dominant scholarly account of Plato's philosophy as authoritative knowledge and of Plato's politics as, if not authoritarian, then at least anti-democratic. Rulers should have such authoritative knowledge and be philosopher-kings. However, learning to read or coming to know by way of Socrates' method, leads to quite a different set of conclusions. Professor Frank resists the claim that Plato's dialogues seek to endorse or enforce a hierarchy of knowledge and politics. Instead, she argues that they offer a philosophical education in self-authorization by representing and enacting challenges to all claims to expert authority, including those of philosophy. |

Magrini, 2016-11-25 Bridging the gap between interpretations of Third Way Platonic scholarship and phenomenological-ontological scholarship, this book argues for a unique ontological-hermeneutic interpretation of Plato and Plato’s Socrates. Reconceptualizing Plato’s Socrates at the Limit of Education offers a re-reading of Plato and Plato’s Socrates in terms of interpreting the practice of education as care for the soul through the conceptual lenses of phenomenology, philosophical hermeneutics, and ontological inquiry. Magrini contrasts his re-reading with the views of Plato and Plato’s Socrates that dominate contemporary education, which, for the most part, emerge through the rigid and reductive categorization of Plato as both a realist and idealist in philosophical foundations texts (teacher education programs). This view also presents what he terms the questionable Socrates-as-teacher model, which grounds such contemporary educational movements as the Paideia Project, which claims to incorporate, through a scripted-curriculum with Socratic lesson plans, the so-called Socratic Method into the Common Core State Standards Curriculum as a technical skill that can be taught and learned as part of the students’ critical thinking skills. After a careful reading incorporating what might be termed a Third Way of reading Plato and Plato’s Socrates, following scholars from the Continental tradition, Magrini concludes that a so-called Socratic education would be nearly impossible to achieve and enact in the current educational milieu of standardization or neo-Taylorism (Social Efficiency). However, despite this, he argues in the affirmative that there is much educators can and must learn from this non-doctrinal re-reading and re-characterization of Plato and Plato’s Socrates. |

It explores the post-classical origins and changing meanings of the term 'anachronism' as well as the presence of anachronism in all its forms in classical literature, criticism and material objects.
