el camino de santiago history: The Pilgrimage Road to Santiago David M. Gitlitz, Linda Kay Davidson, 2000-07-21 The road across northern Spain to Santiago de Compostela in the northwest was one of the three major Christian pilgrimage routes during the Middle Ages, leading pilgrims to the resting place of the Apostle St. James. Today, the system of trails and roads that made up the old pilgrimage route is the most popular long-distance trail in Europe, winding from the heights of the Pyrenees to the gently rolling fields and woods of Galicia. Hundreds of thousands of modern-day pilgrims, art lovers, historians, and adventurers retrace the road today, traveling through a stunningly varied landscape which contains some of the most extraordinary art and architecture in the western world. For any visitor, the Road to Santiago is a treasure trove of historical sites, rustic Spanish villages, churches and cathedrals, and religious art. To fully appreciate the riches of this unique route, look no further than The Pilgrimage Road to Santiago, a fascinating step-by-step guide to the cultural history of the Road for pilgrims, hikers, and armchair travelers alike. Organized geographically, the book covers aspects of the terrain, places of interest, history, artistic monuments, and each town and village's historical relationship to the pilgrimage. The authors have led five student treks along the Road, studying the art, architecture, and cultural sites of the pilgrimage road from southern France to Compostela. Their lectures, based on twenty-five years of pilgrimage scholarship and fieldwork, were the starting point for this handbook. |

In the 21st century, this medieval tradition is seeing a revival with travelers, both spiritual and secular, who embrace it for different reasons. Offering insight into the personal journeys of contemporary pilgrims, this collection of new essays explores cultural expressions of the Camino from the perspective of literature, film and graphic novels, and looks beyond Spain and the Caminoisation of other historical routes. |
el camino de santiago history: I'm Off Then Hape Kerkeling, 2009-06-16 I'm Off Then has sold more than three million copies in Germany and has been translated into eleven languages. The number of pilgrims along the Camino has increased by 20 percent since the book was published. Hape Kerkeling's spiritual journey has struck a chord. Overweight, overworked, and disenchanted, Kerkeling was an unlikely candidate to make the arduous pilgrimage across the Pyrenees to the Spanish shrine of St. James, a 1,200-year-old journey undertaken by nearly 100,000 people every year. But he decided to get off the couch and do it anyway. Lonely and searching for meaning along the way, he began the journal that turned into this utterly frank, engaging book. Filled with unforgettable characters, historic landscapes, and Kerkeling's self-deprecating humor, I'm Off Then is an inspiring travelogue, a publishing phenomenon, and a spiritual journey unlike any other. |

el camino de santiago history: The Best Way Bill Walker, 2011-12-28 Since the times of Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin, Americans have headed off to Europe on odysseys of self-improvement. But until recently, Americans have not chosen 'the best way'-El Camino de Santiago. Bill Walker (Skywalker) decided to undertake this 500 mile pilgrimage, stretching from the Pyrenees in southern France to the mystical Galician province in Northwest Spain. Better yet, he did it in the 'Holy Year' of 2010. Fully 200,000 pilgrims were struggling on foot to make it to the Great Gothic Cathedral in Santiago de Compostela. The Camino is supposed to be a religious-spiritual pilgrimage. But some European pilgrims told Walker it was really the The European Divorcee Trail. At Walker's side was his 18 year-old nephew, Gavin, who thrives with his special brand of Fonzie-like charm. The towel-snapping banter between the two of them is reminiscent of the frat-boy dialogue between Bill Bryson and Katz. Better yet, the two of them learn just how delightful the French really can be (except, of course, when they're being impossible), why the Germans are almost all model pilgrims, and the tragi-glorious roots of the Spanish national character. |

el camino de santiago history: Camino de Santiago Sergi Ramis, 2014-05-15 The first one-volume walking guide to the most popular long-distance route walked by British tourists in Europe. With the advent of low-cost airlines it is as cheap for the British tourist to go to mainland Europe as to the extremities of the UK -- which is why in recent years continental long-distance routes have become increasingly popular with the British walker. Most popular by far is El Camino de Santiago de Compostela, the ancient Christian pilgrimage route that has been travelled for over a thousand years to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, where, legend has it, the bones of St James are buried. This guide follows the most popular route, starting at St Jean-Pied-de-Port in south-west France and heading all the way westwards across northern Spain for 800km to finish at Cape Finisterre on the Atlantic coast. Now, extending its series of Trail Guides beyond the UK for the first time, Aurum publishes the first compact one-volume guide to the path, fully illustrated with photography, it offers comprehensive route directions, sectional route maps, gradient profiles, a history of the route and details of sights to see and separate chapter guides to the main cities along the way like Pamplona, and a list of accommodation en route. |

el camino de santiago history: The Longest Way Home Andrew McCarthy, 2013-06-04 The author, a travel writer and actor, delivers a memoir about how travel helped him become the man he wanted to be, helping him overcome life-long fears and confront his resistance to commitment. From time immemorial, travel has been a pursuit of passion, from adventurers of old seeking gold or new lands, to today's spiritual and pleasure seekers who follow in the footsteps of Elizabeth Gilbert. Some see travel as a form of light-hearted escapism while others believe it has the power to open your mind, forcing you to confront your demons, and discover your true self. The author belongs to this second category of traveler. His memoir follows his excursions to Patagonia, the Amazon, Costa Rica, Baltimore, Vienna, Kilimanjaro, Dublin, and beyond. He uses his wanderlust to examine his motives and desires, and explore his ambivalence about commitment. He ponders his personal life, his acting career, and his impulse to leave home, all building toward one of the most significant moments of his life: his wedding day. His message about the transformative power of travel is universal, and his exploration of the nature and passion of relationships, both fleeting and enduring, strikes a chord with every man and woman who has ever wondered at the vicissitudes of the human heart. |
el camino de santiago history: Iberia James A. Michener, 2015-03-10 “Massive, beautiful . . . unquestionably some of the best writing on Spain [and] the best that Mr. Michener has ever done on any subject.”—The Wall Street Journal Spain is an immemorial land like no other, one that James A. Michener, the Pulitzer Prize–winning author and celebrated citizen of the world, came to love as his own. Iberia is Michener’s enduring nonfiction tribute to his cherished second home. In the fresh and vivid prose that is his trademark, he not only reveals the celebrated history of bullfighters and warrior kings, painters and processions, cathedrals and olive orchards, he also shares the intimate, often hidden country he came to know, where the congeniality of living souls is thrust against the dark weight of history. Wild, contradictory, passionately beautiful, this is Spain as experienced by a master writer. |

el camino de santiago history: The Walk of a Lifetime Russ Eanes, 2019-09-02 Trekking 500 miles on the ancient Camino de Santiago was not just an item for Russ Eanes to check off his bucket list. It was a journey he had dreamed of taking for decades. At age 61, with his children grown, he was too young to retire but wise enough to know that he needed to reorient the hurried pace of his life. He left his work and took a sabbatical to reset himself and the first step was to head to the Camino. With everything he needed in a 16-pound pack and, equipped with a set of seven simple principles, he took off from St. Jean Pied de Port, France, to walk, as pilgrims have for twelve centuries, across Spain, to realize his dream. It was the Walk of a Lifetime. In a style that is part personal memoir and part travel memoir, he combines history, spirituality, coffee, culture and humor into an engaging journey of personal rediscovery. |

el camino de santiago history: El Camino de Santiago Wayne Chimenti, 2006-12-11 El Camino de Santiago - Rites of Passageis about the Chimenti family's travels on a 500-mile walking pilgrimage. It started as Nahja, their 12-year old daughterÕs rite of passage . It turned out to be a test for everyone. The Camino de Santiago is a 1,200-year old pilgrimage that crosses Northern Spain from the French border in the Pyrenees to Santiago near Cape Finisterre. It is steeped in myth, history, and tradition. The idea for the book came when I looked for a book to tell me what it was really like to walk the Camino. I found several straightforward travel guides, dry books on art and architecture, and lots of personal journeys. I wanted to know what day to day life was like on the trail. I personally was fascinated by the myths and legends of the Camino. I kept a journal while we walked, then once back home flush out the background until I got the book I was looking for a year beforehand. The reader learns what it is like to walk the Camino and gets lots of juicy tid-bits. The journey takes you through 40 days of boot-sucking mud, snowstorms, and blazing Iberian sun. We walk out of the Pyrenees, across the meseta, through the hills of Galicia, then into the medieval town of Santiago. Come along and meet the people of the Camino; partying Germans, pilgrims who seek truth, Spanish punks, self-proclaimed Templar knights, the elephant boys, and a Camino dog who walks 20 kilometers with pilgrims everyday. Stay in the refugios, some like palaces, others like bunkers, with hospitalieros who can range from drill sergeants to saints. Fly down the mountainside with Wayne, his foot bleeding, in a falling apart car with a self-proclaimed Templar Knight who blares Gregorian chants. This is a great book for any one interested in learning about the Camino or any one who likes a good adventure story. Included are many tales about the people we meet and the places we stay at. The story recounts the rich history and myth of this legendary medieval pilgrimage that in its heyday attracted a half a million people. It gives practical information about the journey for people who are intrigued enough to want to try it. This is a pilgrimage that is accessible to everyone. It is safe and as challenging as you want it to be. Meanwhile you step back in time, and to a whole other mindset. It is an inspiring story that talks about the value of rites of passage. See how our family overcomes challenges and adversities; and the rich lessons that are learned. As one refugio keeper told us, Walking the Camino is usually the most significant thing that a person does in their life. It touches and changes everyone. |
