fort benning basic training address: With It Or in It Bacil Donovan Warren, 2016-02-24 Using humor and frank candor, author Bacil Donovan Warren shares his personal experience, as well as that of his fellow tankers, as part of the US Army's 3d Armored Cavalry Regiment (the Brave Rifles) in Saudi Arabia and Iraq. Warren recounts the initial shock of hearing about Iraq's invasion of Kuwait and his Regiment's preparation for deployment during Operation Desert Shield. He describes the stress and sometimes mind-numbing boredom of being deployed deep in the desert of Saudi Arabia, constantly preparing for a possible Iraqi invasion. He recalls the terrifying experience of the start of the air war of Operation Desert Storm and the workmanlike action during combat against Iraq's Republican Guard forces during Operation Desert Sabre. With It or in It brings clarity and focus to their unceasing efforts to bring the conflict to a swift and decisive end. Finally, Warren describes the triumphant return of the Brave Rifles to Ft. Bliss, Texas, and the waiting arms of their families and loved ones.

Herman Allen was interned and began working for his country's espionage agency, the OSS, with instructions to befriend a businessman suspected of selling secrets to the Germans. Soon Herman fell in love with a beautiful Swedish-American secretary working for the OSS, their courtship unfolding amid the glamour and intrigue of wartime Stockholm. As Swedish newspapers trumpeted one of the biggest spy scandals of the war, two of the main protagonists walked down the aisle in a storybook wedding presided over by the nephew of the King of Sweden.

fort benning basic training address: Hell in Hürtgen Forest Robert S. Rush, 2001 Some of the most brutally intense infantry combat in World War II occurred within Germany's Hurtgen Forest. Focusing on the bitterly fought battle between the American 22d Infantry Regiment and elements of the German LXXIV Korps around Grosshau, Rush chronicles small-unit combat at its most extreme and shows why, despite enormous losses, the Americans persevered in the Hurtgenwald meat grinder. On 16 November 1944, the 22d Infantry entered the Hurtgen Forest as part of the U.S. Army's drive to cross the Roer River. During the next eighteen days, the 22d suffered more than 2,800 casualties -- or about 86 percent of its normal strength of about 3,250 officers and men. After three days of fighting, the regiment had lost all three battalion commanders. After seven days, rifle company strengths stood at 50 percent and by battle's end each had suffered nearly 140 percent casualties.Despite these horrendous losses, the 22d Regiment survived and fought on, due in part to army personnel policies that ensured that unit strengths remained high even during extreme combat. Previously wounded soldiers returned to their units and new replacements, green to battle, arrived to follow the remaining battle-hardened cadre. The German units in the Hurtgenwald suffered the same horrendous attrition, with one telling difference. German replacement policy detracted from rather than enhanced German combat effectiveness. Organizations had high paper strength but low manpower, and commanders consolidated decimated units time after time until these ever-dwindling bands of soldiers disappeared forever: killed, wounded, captured, or surrendered. The performance of American and German forces during thisharrowing eighteen days of combat was largely a product of their respective backgrounds, training, and organization.Rush's work underscores both the horrors of combat and the resiliency of American organizations.   fort benning basic training address: Fort Benning Kenneth H. Thomas, Jr., 2003 Established outside Columbus, Georgia in October 1918 by the United States Army as Camp Benning, the base was moved to its permanent location, nine miles south, in June 1919. In 1922, the post was made permanent and was named Fort Benning. Created as the new location of The Infantry School of Arms, Fort Benning became the training post for many of the country's future leaders, as well as a major part of the military experience for hundreds of thousands of American soldiers. The post's current size, more than 180,000 acres, has long made it recognized as one of the largest infantry bases in the world. Named for Gen. Henry L. Benning of Columbus, the installation has had a major impact on the economic and social life of nearby Columbus. Images of America: Fort Benning features vintage photographs and postcards, mostly from 1918 to 1978, showcasing the first 60 years of the base's 85-year history. Included are scenes of the temporary encampment on Macon Road and the early wooden encampment on the Main Post. The permanent buildup from the late 1920s to the early 1940s is shown in photographs of The Infantry School, the Officers' Club, Main Post Chapel, Doughboy Stadium, Gowdy Field, the Jump Towers, Lawson Field, the Cuartel Barracks, and the officers' quarters, as well as Riverside, the Commandant's Home, formerly the Bussey Plantation. Activities and events include military reviews, visits of presidents, and the National Infantry Museum's dedication. Generals who served there and are featured include Bradley, Eisenhower, Marshall, and Patton.

fort benning basic training address: Letters to Boot Camp Hayden Hodges, 2012-05-23 From July to Sept. 2014 all book sales will go to housing our homeless veterans here in the US. Check out http: //www.gofundme.com/b34yes for more information. Thank you! Letters to Boot Camp provides the reader with a heart wrenching and awe inspiring look into the lives of a mother and her son as he made his way through Boot Camp on Parris Island. - Once they're shipped out to Boot Camp, the only things that those of us left at home can really do for them is to write and pray. And if you're lucky, smuggle in the occasional treat. (I did.) It wasn't easy, but I wrote him every day, and he wrote me as often as he could. Inside these pages you'll find our personal story, our personal letters, and a good deal of information you may find useful. I like to think of Parris Island as a place of miraculous change and growth. Yeah, change isn't easy, and growing often hurts, but the end result is worth every bit of it. - - On November 7, 2011, in a hotel lobby, I smiled and gave my son one last big hug. I told him I loved him and how proud I was of him. The last thing I said was, You go kick some ass Baby, and I'll be there waiting when you're done. He had to go, so with that I turned around and walked out. Yes, I did look back, and yes, he did grin and wave. From there he would go to MEPS one last time and then get on a bus with all his new best buddies to Parris Island where they would be made into Marines. -
