fulton and alsbury academy of arts and engineering: Reforming Teaching and Teacher Education Eija Kimonen, Raimo Nevalainen, 2017-03-21 What are the prerequisites for reforming education, and how can these reforms be seen in school development and culture? How should teacher education support this reform process? What are the principles and practices underlying the functioning of the schools of tomorrow? These questions are examined in this unique volume. The authors in this book argue that the central function of teacher education and education in general is to respond to the challenges brought on by the twenty-first century. According to this approach, the competencies and skills needed in the future are not merely a new addition to school activities, but rather something requiring a comprehensive reform of school culture encompassing teacher education, curricula, and teaching methods. Such a fundamental process of change in the action and thinking models used by schools would be an effort to achieve a complete transformation, the result of which would be schools developing into organizations that are both creative and imbued with a strong sense of community. A central attribute is that the creation of new knowledge is not just restricted to the classroom but also takes place in out-of-school environments. This would link learning to its natural context, eventually leading to an ideal instruction that is actively problem oriented, holistic, and life centered. This reform-minded volume is divided into three parts. The first part focuses on the reform processes in teacher education, the second on the reforms of pedagogics at schools and teacher education institutions, and the third on the processes of reculturing schools. New prospects for active schools in the United States and Europe, as well as in Japan and China, are discussed. |

Most municipalities in the United States, and nearly all countries around the world, have laws and policies to preserve heritage in situ, seeking to protect places from physical loss and the forces of change. That privilege, however, is increasingly being unsettled by the legacies of racial, economic, and social injustice in both the built environment and historic preservation policy, and by the compounding climate crisis. Though many heritage projects and practitioners are confronting injustice and climate in innovative ways, systemic change requires looking beyond the formal and material dimensions of place and to the processes and outcomes of preservation policy--operationalized through laws and guidelines, regulatory processes, and institutions--across time and socio-geographic scales, and in relation to the publics they are intended to serve. This third volume in the Issues in Preservation Policy series examines historic preservation as an enterprise of ideas, methods, institutions, and practices that must reorient toward a new horizon, one in which equity and sustainability become critical guideposts for policy evolution. |

As a kid I would hang around the kitchen as my family cooked and socialized. The end result was either a casual dinner or an intimate supper, but always fabulous! It wasn't until I moved to Ames and had to fend for myself that I discovered I also had the ability to cook. The kitchen in our tiny apartment was far from gourmet but it didn't stop me from cooking. Now, as I quickly approach the end of my senior year in graphic design, I decided to put together a collection of the recipes I've tried with roommates and friends at Iowa State through the years. My life changed for the better when I adopted my Shiba Inu, Louie, this past January. He brings me just as much happiness as cooking does. It's hard to deny our furry friends when they sit and wait patiently for just a nibble. Louie has been a taste tester for many of these recpies; however, they are not specifically intended for dogs. Therefore, I have included a few pupcake recipes, which are dog friendly cupcakes that Louie loves. Enjoy! |
