The vast majority of American college students attend two thousand or so private and public institutions that might be described as the Middle—reputable educational institutions, but not considered equal to the elite and entrenched upper echelon of the Ivy League and other prestigious schools. Richard DeMillo has a warning for these colleges and universities in the Middle: If you do not change, you are heading for irrelevance and marginalization. In Abelard to Apple, DeMillo argues that these institutions, clinging precariously to a centuries-old model of higher education, are ignoring the social, historical, and economic forces at work in today's world. Last year, when the lockdown struck, I was left feeling listless because I couldn't attend classes. Undeterred, I began watching ballet-centered movies ranging from documentaries like A Ballerina's Tale to a drama series, The Dance Academy. It didn't take me too long to start noticing certain similarities between my ballet journey and those of the characters. Soon enough, I found myself penning down all of those stories - my ballet stories intertwined with anecdotes from the films I had seen. A reasoner using old experiences (cases) might use those cases to suggest solutions to problems, to point out potential problems with a solution being computed, to interpret a new situation and make predictions about what might happen, or to create arguments justifying some conclusion. A case-based reasoner solves new problems by remembering old situations and adapting their solutions. It interprets new situations by remembering old similar situations and comparing and contrasting the new one to old ones to see where it fits best. Case-based reasoning combines reasoning with learning. It spans the whole reasoning cycle. A situation is experienced. Old situations are used to understand it. Old situations are used to solve a problem (if there is one to be solved). Then the new situation is inserted into memory alongside the cases it used for reasoning, to be used another time. The key to this reasoning method, then, is remembering. Remembering has two parts: integrating cases or experiences into memory when they happen and recalling them in appropriate situations later on. The case-based reasoning community calls this related set of issues the indexing problem. In broad terms, it means finding in memory the experience closest to a new situation. In narrower terms, it can be described as a two-part problem: assigning indexes or labels to experiences when they are put into memory that describe the situations to which they are applicable, so that they can be recalled later; and at recall time, elaborating the new situation in enough detail so that the indexes it would have if it were in the memory are identified. It then turns to some of the important and evolving areas of informatics including population and public health, mHealth and big data and analytics. Use cases and case studies are used in all of these discussions to help readers connect the technologies to real world challenges. Effective use of informatics systems and tools by providers and their patients is key to improving the quality, safety and cost of healthcare. With health records now digital, no effective means has existed for sharing them with patients, among the multiple providers who may care for them and for important secondary uses such as public/population health and research. This problem is a topic of congressional discussion and is addressed by the 21st Century Cures Act of 2016 that mandates that electronic health record (EHR) systems offer a patient-facing API. HL7’s Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) is that API and this is the first comprehensive treatment of the technology and the many ways it is already being used. FHIR is based on web technologies and is thus a far more facile, easy to implement approach that is rapidly gaining acceptance. SureScripts, the national e-Prescribing network, is using FHIR to help doctors know if their patients are complying with prescriptions. Interaction transforms people from mere viewers to active participants in the process of analyzing and understanding data. This discourse between people and data enables people to understand aspects of their data, such as structure, patterns, trends, outliers, and other properties that ultimately result in insight. Through interacting with visualizations, users engage in sensemaking, a process of developing and understanding relationships within datasets through foraging and synthesis. The book provides a description of the principles of semantic interaction, providing design guidelines for the integration of semantic interaction into visual analytics, examples of existing technologies that leverage semantic interaction, and a discussion of how to evaluate these technologies. Semantic interaction has the potential to increase the effectiveness of visual analytic technologies and opens possibilities for a fundamentally new design space for user interaction in visual analytics systems. |

In this book, Annette Vee examines the coding-as-literacy analogy and argues that it can be an apt rhetorical frame. The theoretical tools of literacy help us understand programming beyond a technical level, and in its historical, social, and conceptual contexts. Viewing programming from the perspective of literacy and literacy from the perspective of programming, she argues, shifts our understandings of both. Computer programming becomes part of an array of communication skills important in everyday life, and literacy, augmented by programming, becomes more capacious. Vee examines the ways that programming is linked with literacy in coding literacy campaigns, considering the ideologies that accompany this coupling, and she looks at how both writing and programming encode and distribute information.
