Jeremy Lehnen argues that these films promote an agenda in support of the nation’s recent swing toward authoritarianism that culminated in the 2018 election of far-right president Jair Bolsonaro. The first group overcomes malpractice in elections through long exercises, when they could be using technology for accurate and swift delivery of poll results. For instance, the US can overcome controversial elections by empowering the Federal Election Commission to establish a uniform system. Colonial and dictatorial legacies instigated citizens' undemocratic behavior in new democracies. Electronic voting has fixed malpractices in their elections in a shorter period. Therefore, this book argues that electronic voting should be implemented in both mature and new democracies. |

He is widely recognized for having transformed the urban imprint of São Paulo. His best-known buildings include the Brazilian Museum of Sculpture, remarkable for its engagement with the site and its daring structure; the renovation of the Pinacoteca do Estado, with audacious metallic inserts; and outstanding private houses, starting with his own. In 2006, he became the second Brazilian architect, after Oscar Niemeyer, to win the Pritzker Prize. This retrospective catalogue is the first major publication on Mendes da Rocha since the establishment of his archive at the Casa da Arquitectura in 2021. A team of international scholars provides a comprehensive view of the architect's trajectory and the collective dimension of his work, along with thematic essays. It was a fruit of the Portuguese Enlightenment, which encouraged investment in manufacturing, particularly of iron, a metal indispensable for military and technological purposes. However, the plans faced the resistance of African blacksmiths and founders who refused to learn foreign techniques and work processes. By emphasizing Central African agency, the book highlights the successful strategies of historical actors who scholars have largely ignored. Based upon a wide variety of sources from Brazilian, Portuguese, and Angolan archives, the book reconstructs how Africans were taken to work at the foundry and the important role they played in developing the form of production employed there. By emphasizing continuities with African technology and the quality of the iron produced, it counters interpretations of the project as an example of the failure of the Portuguese Enlightenment. The analysis demonstrates the circulation of knowledge about iron production, thus revitalizing debates that have posited knowledge transmission as unidirectional. It also highlights the relationship between local political leaders and the colonial government, in addition to elucidating the processes by which workers were organized. |

Quando fatores como gênero e deficiência se associam à certa condição social, nacionalidade e cor, potencializam as práticas de discriminação e de opressão das identidades, desafiando as doutrinas antidiscriminatórias. A sinergia entre essas diversas fontes de discriminação demanda que o enfrentamento também se faça de forma sistêmica, segundo o paradigma da interseccionalidade. Nessa perspectiva, a análise de gênero e deficiência como fatores de discriminação e vulnerabilidade no âmbito do direito privado, esbarrará, inequivocamente, na interseccionalidade – ou seja, na interação sinergética entre diversas modalidades de discriminação que vulnera ainda mais a pessoa. Mais vulnerável e espoliado em sua autonomia será aquele que sofre os efeitos sinergéticos de múltiplos fatores de opressão e discriminação. |
