The Core Concepts of ACL University Gender Studies
The ACL University Gender Studies program is built upon a foundation of critical feminist theory, queer theory, and intersectionality. These frameworks provide essential tools for analyzing the complexities of gender, sexuality, and power.
Feminist Theory: This foundational element examines the social, political, and economic inequalities based on gender. At ACL University, feminist theory is taught in its diverse forms, including liberal feminism, radical feminism, socialist feminism, and postmodern feminism, encouraging critical engagement with the historical and contemporary manifestations of patriarchy.
Queer Theory: This approach challenges normative understandings of gender and sexuality, highlighting the fluidity and performativity of identity. ACL University Gender Studies courses explore how queer theory can be used to analyze power dynamics, social justice issues, and the construction of sexual identities.
Intersectionality: This crucial framework recognizes that gender intersects with other social categories like race, class, and ability to shape individual experiences of oppression and privilege. ACL University Gender Studies emphasizes the importance of understanding how these intersecting systems of power influence social inequalities.

acl university gender studies: Sex and Gender in Acute Care Medicine Alyson J. McGregor, Esther K. Choo, Bruce M. Becker, 2016-05-20 Until the past decade, clinicians and researchers assumed that the medical evaluation and treatment of both women and men were the same. This archaic and dangerous notion persisted in spite of the clear anatomic and physiologic differences between the genders. Today, we fully understand that this paradigm is false. In all specialties of medicine, practitioners and researchers are beginning to consider the influence of sex and gender and how it should inform the care of their patients. This book focuses on the issue of sex and gender in the evaluation and treatment of patients specifically in the delivery of acute medical care. It serves as a guide both to clinicians interested in the impact of sex and gender on their practice and to researchers interested in the current state of the art in the field and critical future research directions. |
acl university gender studies: The Psychology of Gender Alice H. Eagly, Anne E. Beall, Robert J. Sternberg, 2005-08-19 To what extent does gender influence our behavior, thoughts, and feelings? How do nature and nurture interact to shape our identities as female or male? And what are the effects of gender on the ways we are perceived and treated by others? The second edition of this important text and reference confronts the central questions pertaining to gender differences and similarities across the lifespan. Rather than focusing on a particular viewpoint, the volume is carefully designed to foster comparison among different lines of psychological research and provide a broad survey of cutting-edge work in the field. |
acl university gender studies: Gender Smart Mobility Hilda Rømer Christensen, Michala Hvidt Breengaard, Lena Levin, 2023-07-21 This book presents gender and diversity in smart transport as a cutting-edge issue in urban contexts around the globe. It addresses new challenges and possibilities related to the smart transport sector. It demonstrates how gender and diversity are entangled in concepts and various forms of current smart mobility practices in policy, planning, and innovation. Gender Smart Mobility is presented as a game changer for future transport planning and mobility practices and how smart mobility technologies and practices might be created as a common good for all. The readers are presented with fresh approaches ranging from intersectional and visual analysis of smart mobility, gender scripts and language, to gendered innovation of design and planning. Moreover, the readers will encounter engaging boxed features which present historical, cross-cultural, and methodological examples and pose questions for critical thinking. This book meets a need for a systematic, accessible, and practical introduction and is of interest to city planners, transport providers, and politicians as well as the general public. acl university gender studies: Gender Roles Carole A. Beere, 1990-03-20 Beere has produced a new edition of her Women and Women's Issues: A Handbook of Tests and Measurements. Based largely on a search of the PsychLIT and ERIC databases from January 1978 to December 1988, the volume includes information on 211 tests and measures pertaining to gender roles and attitudes towards gender. . . . Particularly useful are chapter reviews of the literature in which the author reviews the quality of available research. Recommended for college and university libraries. Choice This handbook stems, in part, from the author's previously published Women and Women's Issues. Realizing that a book published in 1979 could no longer provide researchers with the up-to-date information they require regarding measures to use in research, Beere set out to revise and update her work. In the process, she soon discovered that the measures identified through her search of the literature produced since her first book was published far exceeds the number that can be realistically described in a single handbook. Thus, she has undertaken a two-volume guide, the first of which, Gender Roles, describes only those measures pertaining to gender roles and attitudes toward gender-related issues. Gender roles are broadly defined to include adults' and children's gender roles, gender stereotypes, marital roles, parental roles, employee roles, and multiple roles. A total of 211 measures are included. In addition to 67 scales still in use that were described in her earlier book, Beere includes scales that are relevant, have evidence of their reliability and/or validity, and are used in more than one published article or ERIC document. If a scale does not satisfy these criteria, but its development is the focus of an article or ERIC document, it is included, as are scales that are unusual or pertain to a topic that would otherwise receive inadequate coverage in this handbook. The scale descriptions follow a standard format that includes the following information: title; author or authors as listed in the earliest publication mentioning the scale; earliest date that the scale is mentioned in a publication; profile of variable being measured; type of instrument; description; sample items; previous and appropriate subjects; scoring information; a description of the development of the measure; information regarding reliability and validity; and a listing of published studies that use the measure. This important new handbook promises to make several important contributions to gender-related research. It will make it easier for researchers to locate quality instruments appropriate for their research, discourage the proliferation of substandard or redundant measures, set some minimal standards for measures used in gender role research, and encourage more research regarding gender roles. All social science libraries will want to find a place for it in their reference collections. |

acl university gender studies: Culturally Responsive Leadership in Higher Education Lorri Santamaría, Andrés Santamaría, 2015-10-16 Rapidly changing global demographics demand visionary, collaborative, and culturally appropriate leadership practices on university campuses. In the face of widening gaps in academic achievement and socio-economic roadblocks, Culturally Responsive Leadership in Higher Education offers a new vision of leadership, where diversity is transformed from challenge into opportunity. This book offers a range of perspectives from culturally, racially, linguistically, ability, and gender-diverse contributors who demonstrate that effective leadership springs from those who engage, link theory to practice, and promote access, equity, and educational improvement for underserved students. Each chapter explores a critical higher educational leadership issue with feasible strategies and solutions. In this exciting book, theory and research-based chapters unpack culturally responsive leadership, revealing how higher education leaders in the U.S. and international contexts can improve their practice for social equity and educational change. |
acl university gender studies: Measures of Personality and Social Psychological Attitudes John P. Robinson, Phillip R. Shaver, Lawrence S. Wrightsman, 2013-10-22 Measures of Personality and Social Psychological Attitudes: Volume 1 in Measures of Social Psychological Attitudes Series provides a comprehensive guide to the most promising and useful measures of important social science concepts. This book is divided into 12 chapters and begins with a description of the Measures of Personality and Social Psychological Attitudes Project's background and the major criteria for scale construction. The subsequent chapters review measures of response set; the scales dealing with the most general affective states, including life satisfaction and happiness; and the measured of self-esteem. These topics are followed by discussions of measures of social anxiety, which is conceived a major inhibitor of social interaction, as well as the negative states of depression and loneliness. Other chapters examine the separate dimensions of alienation, the predictive value of interpersonal trust and attitudes in studies of occupational choice and racial attitude change, and the attitude scales related to locus of control. The final chapters look into the measures related to authoritarianism, androgyny, and values. This book is of great value to social and political scientists, psychologists, nurses, social workers, non-academic professionals, and students. |
acl university gender studies: From Sounds to Structures Roberto Petrosino, Pietro Cerrone, Harry van der Hulst, 2018-09-10 The term ‘Maya’, in Indian traditions, refers to our sensory perception of the world and, as such, to a superficial reality (or ‘un–reality’) that we must look beyond to find the inner reality of things. Applied to the study of language, we perceive sounds, a superficial reality, and then we seek structures, the underlying reality in what we call phonology, morphology, and syntax. This volume starts with an introduction by the editors, which shows how the various papers contained in the volume reflect the spectrum of research interests of Andrea Calabrese, as well as his influence on the work of colleagues and his students. Contributors, united in their search for the abstract structures that underlie the appearances of languages include linguists such as Adriana Belletti, Paola Benincà, Jonathan Bobaljik, Gugliemo Cinque, David Embick, Mirko Grimaldi, Harry van der Hulst, Michael Kenstowicz, Maria Rita Manzini, Andrew Nevins, Elizabeth Pyatt, Luigi Rizzi, Leonardo Savoia, Laura Vanelli, Bert Vaux, Susi Wurmbrand, as well as a few junior researchers including Mariachiara Berizzi, Giuliano Bocci, Stefano Canalis, Silvio Cruschina, Irina Monich, Beata Moskal, Diego Pescarini, Joseph Perry, Roberto Petrosino, and Kobey Schwayder. |
acl university gender studies: The Politics of Language Jason Stanley, David Beaver, 2023-11-07 In much of the theory of meaning, philosophers and linguists have focused on the use of language in conveying information in cooperative informational exchanges. As a result, political uses of speech, of the sort that political propaganda exemplifies, have not been taken to be a central case of language use. In this book, Jason Stanley and David Beaver focus on the political use of speech as a central case, which leads to a foundational rethinking of the theory of meaning. By focusing on the political uses of speech, one arrives at better (and more general) tools to describe speech, as well as a more accurate view of its central functions. More dramatically, it enables us to see the ways in which virtually all speech is political-a fact that is masked by much of the theory of meaning. Stanley and Beaver's topic is speech generally-its function and how best to represent that function. Political propaganda serves as a window into that topic, since its function is not obviously to share information, or even misinformation. They emphasize the importance of understanding how political propaganda works via the topic of the justification of free speech and argue that political propaganda poses a problem for a broad range of justifications of free speech. Stanley and Beaver argue that it is not possible to compartmentalize the political aspects of speech from the non-political aspects of speech, nor is it possible to carve out a neutral deliberative space of evaluating reasons qua reasons. Speech is invariably political-- |

The focus on junior athletes will aid in their education, injury prevention and increased performance. It will also benefit instructors at the junior and senior high school levels. The book is composed of seven parts. In the beginning part, current situations and the general characteristics of sports-related injuries are outlined on the basis of an investigation utilizing statistical data involving a large number of populations. In the following parts, detailed information on the injuries in terms of the types of sports activities, body sites, symptoms and the relationships among these factors are discussed. Part 2, for example, deals with topics on concussion and severe head–neck injuries which occur frequently in rugby and judo. In Parts 3 and 4, as one of the major sports-related injuries, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are discussed. Beginning with the underlying mechanisms as assessed by using the latest measuring techniques, characteristic features of their occurrence are described. Further, Part 4 deals with topics on post-operative (ACL reconstruction) aspects of ACL injuries, especially those related to muscle functions and tendon regeneration in the hamstring muscles. Part 5 deals with muscle strain and focuses particularly on those occurring in the hamstring muscles, as this muscle group is known, as one of the most frequent sites of muscle strain. In Part 6, disorders related to the ankle and foot are introduced. Finally, Part 7 provides information on lower back disorders. Included are detailed mechanisms of their incidence, epidemiology and implications for their prevention. |

acl university gender studies: DisCrit Expanded Subini A. Annamma, Beth A. Ferri, David J. Connor, Alfredo J. Artiles, 2022 The grounding assumption that undergirds Disability Critical Race Theory (DisCrit) is that racism and ableism are mutually constitutive and collusive-always circulating across time and context in interconnected ways. Through we originally wrote DisCrit in 2013 and have written a number of projects with it as the foundation, DisCrit rapidly expanded far beyond our own work. In tracing this reverberation, we are struck by the ways DisCrit has been taken up, expanded upon, and used as a jumping off point for further creative articulations. The dynamic landscape of scholarship taking up DisCrit reflects its role in fostering a transgressive space that has generated critical questions looking outward, inward, and across differences and divides. Following an introduction by a, intellectual forerunner to DisCrit, Alfredo Artiles, is a three-part edited book organized around central inquiries that are directed outward, inward, as well as across or margin-to-margin. Through each section, authors answer these central inquiries by applying DisCrit across theoretical, methodological, and analytical spaces to shift praxis, exploring who we are answerable to axiologically, and expanding beyond missing pieces or silences associated with DisCrit. The closing chapter synthesizes ruptures, including issues raised and explored in the present text, and look toward the future of how DisCrit can be useful in developing more complex understandings of inequalities with view to working toward countering them in different, yet interconnected, levels including: the personal, the professional, and the structural-- |

acl university gender studies: Sport, Violence and Society Kevin Young, 2019-03-28 In this fully updated and revised new edition of his landmark study of violence in and around contemporary sport, Kevin Young offers a comprehensive sociological analysis of an issue of central importance within sport studies. The book explores organised and spontaneous violence, both on the field and off, and calls for a much broader definition of ‘sports-related violence’, to include issues as diverse as criminal behaviour by players, abuse within sport and exploitative labour practices. Offering a sophisticated theoretical framework for understanding violence in a sporting context and including new case studies and updated empirical data – from professional soccer in Europe to ice hockey in North America – the book establishes a benchmark for the study of violence within sport and wider society. Through close examination of often contradictory trends, from anti-violence initiatives in professional sports leagues to the role of the media in encouraging hyper-aggression, the book throws new light on our understanding of the socially-embedded character of sport and its fundamental ties to history, culture, politics, social class, gender and the law. This new edition also recognises burgeoning new literatures, such as research examining concussion and the link between sport and mental illness and includes student-friendly pedagogical aids, such as critical thinking questions at the end of each chapter. Sport, Violence and Society is a vital read for anyone studying or working in the areas of the Sociology of Sport, Sport Psychology, Ethics and Philosophy of Sport, Sport and Politics, Sports History, and Sport and the Media. |

acl university gender studies: The Anthropology of Digital Practices John Postill, 2024-03-29 The Anthropology of Digital Practices connects for the first time three distinct research areas – digital ethnography, causal ethnography, and media practice theory – to explore how we might track the effects of new media practices in a digital world. It invites media and communication students and scholars to overcome the field’s old aversion to ‘media effects’ and explores the messy, complex, open-ended effects of new media practices in a digital age. Based on long-term ethnographic research and drawing from recent advances in the study of causality and ethnography, this book tells the ‘formation story’ of the anti-woke movement through a series of critical media events. It argues that digital media practices (e.g. podcasting, YouTubing, tweeting, commenting, broadcasting) will have ‘formative’ effects on an emerging social world at different points in time. One important task of the digital ethnographer is precisely to distinguish between the formative and non-formative effects of specific media practices. This book makes three contributions to our understanding of media practices in the digital era, namely a theoretical, methodological, and empirical contribution. Theoretically, it furthers the ‘practice turn’ in media and communication studies by engaging with the latest thinking on causality and ethnography. Methodologically, it serves as a compelling, up-to-date guide to doing digital ethnography, with special reference to the study of digitally mediated practices. Empirically, it is the first book-length study of the anti-woke movement, a major actor in the ‘culture wars’ currently being fought across the Western world. With its accessible language and rich case studies, The Anthropology of Digital Practices will make an ideal supplementary textbook for a range of undergraduate and graduate courses in research methods, digital ethnography/anthropology, and digital activism. |

acl university gender studies: The Morphosyntax of Gender Ruth T. Kramer, 2015 This book presents a new cross-linguistic analysis of gender and its effects on morphosyntax. It addresses questions including the syntactic location of gender features; the role of natural gender; and the relationship between syntactic gender features and the morphological realization of gender. Ruth Kramer argues that gender features are syntactically located on the n head ('little n'), which serves to nominalize category-neutral roots. Those gender features are either interpretable, as in the case of natural gender, or uninterpretable, like the gender of an inanimate noun in Spanish. Adopting Distributed Morphology, the book lays out how the gender features on n map onto the gender features relevant for morphological exponence. The analysis is supported by an in-depth case study of Amharic, which poses challenges for previous gender analyses and provides clear support for gender on n. The proposals generate a typology of two- and three-gender systems, with the various types illustrated using data from a genetically diverse set of languages. Finally, further evidence for gender being on n is provided from case studies of Somali and Romanian, as well as from the relationship between gender and other linguistic phenomena including derived nouns and declension class. Overall, the book provides one of the first large-scale, cross-linguistically-oriented, theoretical approaches to the morphosyntax of gender. |

acl university gender studies: Her Country Marissa R. Moss, 2022-05-10 In country music, the men might dominate the radio waves. But it’s women—like Maren Morris, Mickey Guyton, and Kacey Musgraves—who are making history. This is the full and unbridled story of the past twenty years of country music seen through the lens of these trailblazers’ careers—their paths to stardom and their battles against a deeply embedded boys’ club, as well as their efforts to transform the genre into a more inclusive place—as told by award-winning Nashville journalist Marissa R. Moss. For the women of country music, 1999 was an entirely different universe—a brief blip in time, when women like Shania Twain and the Chicks topped every chart and made country music a woman’s world. But the industry, which prefers its stars to be neutral, be obedient, and never rock the boat, had other plans. It wanted its women to “shut up and sing”—or else. In 2021, women are played on country radio as little as 10 percent of the time, but they’re still selling out arenas, as Kacey Musgraves does, and becoming infinitely bigger live draws than most of their male counterparts, creating massive pop crossover hits like Maren Morris’s “The Middle,” pushing the industry to confront its racial biases with Mickey Guyton’s “Black Like Me,” and winning heaps of Grammy nominations. Her Country is the story of how in the past two decades, country’s women fought back against systems designed to keep them down and created entirely new pathways to success. It’s the behind-the-scenes story of how women like Kacey, Mickey, Maren, Miranda Lambert, Rissi Palmer, Brandi Carlile, and many more have reinvented their place in an industry stacked against them. When the rules stopped working for these women, they threw them out, made their own, and took control—changing the genre forever, and for the better. |
