anatomy of a well: Images of Public Wealth or the Anatomy of Well-Being in Indigenous Amazonia Fernando Santos-Granero, 2015-11-26 What is considered a good life in contemporary societies? Can we measure well-being and happiness? Reflecting a global interest on the topics of well-being, happiness, and the good life in the face of the multiple failures of millennial capitalism, Images of Public Wealth or the Anatomy of Well-Being in Indigenous Amazonia deliberately appropriates a concept developed by classical economists to understand wealth accumulation in capitalist societies in order to denaturalize it and assess its applicability in non-capitalist kin-based societies. Mindful of the widespread discontent generated by the ongoing economic crisis in postindustrial societies as well as the renewed attempts by social scientists to measure more effectively what we consider to be “development” and “economic success,” the contributors to this volume contend that the study of public wealth in indigenous Amazonia provides not only an exceptional opportunity to apprehend native notions of wealth, poverty, and the good life, but also to engage in a critical revision of capitalist constructions of living well. Through ethnographic analysis and thought-provoking new approaches to contemporary and historical cases, the book’s contributors reveal how indigenous views of wealth—based on the abundance of intangibles such as vitality, good health, biopower, and convivial relations—are linked to the creation of strong, productive, and moral individuals and collectivities, differing substantially from those in capitalist societies more inclined toward the avid accumulation and consumption of material goods.
anatomy of a well: Robert Burton's Rhetoric Susan Wells, 2021-06 Illustrates how Oxford scholar Robert Burton used the resources available to a seventeenth century academic: genres and languages, as well as academic disciplines such as medicine and rhetoric. Demonstrates how early modern practices of knowledge and persuasion can offer a model for transdisciplinary scholarship today.

anatomy of a well: Functional Anatomy of Yoga David Keil, 2023-01-17 A full-color illustrated exploration of the body in motion during yoga practice • Examines anatomical patterns and body mechanics in specific asanas, such as forward bends, twists, external hip rotations, arm balances, and back bends, to inspire confidence in students, deepen practice, and prevent injury • Provides detailed images and photos overlaid with anatomical diagrams, allowing you to see clearly what is happening within each asana discussed • Explores how various yoga postures interrelate from the perspective of functional anatomy In this full-color illustrated guide, David Keil brings the anatomy of the body in yoga asanas to life. Writing in an accessible, conversational tone, he outlines how practitioners and yoga teachers alike can utilize a deeper understanding of their anatomy and its movement and function to deepen their yoga practice, increase confidence, prevent injury, and better understand their students and their challenges. Providing detailed images and photos overlaid with anatomical diagrams, allowing you to see clearly what is happening within each asana discussed, Keil shows how the muscles, joints, tendons, and structure of the body work together to support integrated movement. He discusses the basics of functional anatomy, exploring the workings of the foot and ankle, the knee, the hip joint, the pelvis and SI joint, the spine, the shoulder, and the hand, wrist, and elbow. He examines anatomical patterns and body mechanics in specific asanas, such as forward bends, twists, external hip rotations, arm balances, and back bends, such as, for example, how a wide-legged forward bend shifts the position of the femur and the pelvis, allowing students with tight hamstrings to accomplish a deep forward bend--something they struggle with when the legs are together. Keil also shows how various yoga postures interrelate from the perspective of functional anatomy. Revealing in detail how everything in the body is connected and how your anatomy functions holistically during yoga practice, this book helps you to understand the body better and connect and integrate yoga postures in a completely new way.

anatomy of a well: The Anatomy of the Honey Bee Dr. R. E. Snodgrass, 2018-02-27 “As a world authority on insect anatomy, Snodgrass has given us this book a brilliant account of the anatomy of the honey bee and how it relates to the way that bees develop and how and why they function as they do in their interesting communal life. This book should be in the library of every student of the honey bee and bee behaviour—beekeepers as well as scientists. The book is delightfully written and is enjoyable reading.”—American Bee Journal “This is not just a technical reference book on honey bee anatomy. It is far more, it is essentially a treatise on entomology, using one species as an example, and including a discussion of the fundamentals of embryology, development, and metamorphosis as well as anatomy. The subject of each chapter is approached from the broadest evolutionary point of view, and its horizon includes all the arthropods and beyond, so that the bee really typifies animal life in general. Finally, the language of the book is such that it can be read straight through with pleasure....It is a delight to follow the author through this complete examination of one insect: how it develops, how it grows, and how it operates.”—Entomological News

anatomy of a well: Oxford Papers C. Terry Warner, 2013-09-20 Educated in philosophy at Yale, Dr. C. Terry Warner has devoted a lifetime to the study of self-deception. In a steady stream of lectures, papers, and seminars over nearly three decades, Dr. Warner has presented the results of his academic inquiry into the foundations of human behavior to both scholarly and non-scholarly audiences. The papers that make up this collection, among others, were all prepared as part of Warner's work at Oxford--either presented in lectures there, prepared for presentation or publication there, or prepared in response to colleagues there--and have been assembled for the use of the serious student of Arbinger's rich and robust philosophical underpinnings--

anatomy of a well: Kinetic Anatomy Robert S. Behnke, 2012-06-04 Created primarily for those who will work in physical activity fields, the third edition of Kinetic Anatomy continues to building on its previous editions to assert itself as the ideal resource for learning structural anatomy and how it affects movement. The text gives students a firm concept of musculoskeletal anatomy by systematically assembling each component of the human body. Layer by layer, readers will study bones, ligaments, joints, and muscles on the bones, as well as the nerves and blood vessels that supply these muscles that are essential for movement. Kinetic Anatomy, Third Edition, includes coverage of three major structures that are not often considered when studying the anatomy of movement: the brain, heart, and lungs. As the centerpieces for the nervous, cardiovascular, and respiratory systems, these structures are essential to human movement and are highlighted throughout the text where appropriate. In addition, other fundamental features make this resource a valuable tool for learning and teaching human anatomy: • A one-year subscription to Musculoskeletal Anatomy Review, an online anatomy program, provides an interactive forum for reviewing regional structural anatomy. • A new chapter on the head completes the regional approach followed in the text. • More information on muscle and motor units helps broaden information on movement potential in selected sport activities. • Expanded discussion on joint strength and movement and the function of muscles (agonists, antagonists, stabilizers, and synergists), levers, and exercise supports understanding of how the human body is constructed. • Full-color photos and illustrations enhance the learning experience. • New Functional Movement Exercises provide students with the opportunity for practical application of their studies by asking them to identify the prime mover, antagonist, fixator, and synergist muscle in a particular movement. • Hands On exercises throughout the book offer students practice in physically identifying anatomical structures on themselves or on a partner. Included with each new text is a key code allowing students one-year access to the online anatomy program Musculoskeletal Anatomy Review. This engaging supplement to the text offers a regional review of structural anatomy with exceptionally detailed, high-quality graphic images—the majority provided by Primal Pictures. Students can mouse over muscles and click for muscle identification, and each chapter features a pretest and posttest evaluation to help students pinpoint knowledge gaps and test their retention. The pretest can be taken multiple times and is generated randomly so it will never be the same, but the posttest may be taken only once. Test results can be printed and turned in so instructors have the option to use the tests as a grading tool. To further facilitate learning, each chapter in the book concludes with a review of the key terms referred to in the chapter, suggested learning activities, and review questions in multiple-choice and fill-in-the-blank formats. The answers to the questions are provided at the end of the book. For instructors, a new image bank accompanies the updated instructor guide and test package to aid in delivering the course content. Kinetic Anatomy, Third Edition, is an outstanding introductory resource for those who plan to specialize in any field related to physical activity. Readers will learn what structures are involved in movement and how those structures should function, allowing them to identify problems and correct them to enhance physical activity.

anatomy of a well: An Introduction to Human Evolutionary Anatomy Leslie Aiello, Christopher Dean, 1990-09-11 An anthropologist and an anatomist have combined their skills in this book to provide students and research workers with the essentials of anatomy and the means to apply these to investigations into hominid form and function. Using basic principles and relevant bones, conclusions can be reached regarding the probable musculature, stance, brain size, age, weight, and sex of a particular fossil specimen. The sort of deductions which are possible are illustrated by reference back to contemporary apes and humans, and a coherent picture of the history of hominid evolution appears. Written in a clear and concise style and beautifully illustrated, An Introduction to Human Evolutionary Anatomy is a basic reference for all concerned with human evolution as well as a valuable companion to both laboratory practical sessions and new research using fossil skeletons.
