andrews physical therapy blaine tn: Trauma and Recovery Judith Lewis Herman, 2015-07-07 In this groundbreaking book, a leading clinical psychiatrist redefines how we think about and treat victims of trauma. A stunning achievement that remains a classic for our generation. (Bessel van der Kolk, M.D., author of The Body Keeps the Score). Trauma and Recovery is revered as the seminal text on understanding trauma survivors. By placing individual experience in a broader political frame, Harvard psychiatrist Judith Herman argues that psychological trauma is inseparable from its social and political context. Drawing on her own research on incest, as well as a vast literature on combat veterans and victims of political terror, she shows surprising parallels between private horrors like child abuse and public horrors like war. Hailed by the New York Times as one of the most important psychiatry works to be published since Freud, Trauma and Recovery is essential reading for anyone who seeks to understand how we heal and are healed. |

andrews physical therapy blaine tn: The End of Trauma George A. Bonanno, 2021-09-07 With “groundbreaking research on the psychology of resilience” (Adam Grant), a top expert on human trauma argues that we vastly overestimate how common PTSD is in and fail to recognize how resilient people really are. After 9/11, mental health professionals flocked to New York to handle what everyone assumed would be a flood of trauma cases. Oddly, the flood never came. In The End of Trauma, pioneering psychologist George A. Bonanno argues that we failed to predict the psychological response to 9/11 because most of what we understand about trauma is wrong. For starters, it’s not nearly as common as we think. In fact, people are overwhelmingly resilient to adversity. What we often interpret as PTSD are signs of a natural process of learning how to deal with a specific situation. We can cope far more effectively if we understand how this process works. Drawing on four decades of research, Bonanno explains what makes us resilient, why we sometimes aren’t, and how we can better handle traumatic stress. Hopeful and humane, The End of Trauma overturns everything we thought we knew about how people respond to hardship. |

andrews physical therapy blaine tn: Strengthening the Military Family Readiness System for a Changing American Society National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education, Board on Children, Youth, and Families, Committee on the Well-Being of Military Families, 2019-10-25 The U.S. military has been continuously engaged in foreign conflicts for over two decades. The strains that these deployments, the associated increases in operational tempo, and the general challenges of military life affect not only service members but also the people who depend on them and who support them as they support the nation †their families. Family members provide support to service members while they serve or when they have difficulties; family problems can interfere with the ability of service members to deploy or remain in theater; and family members are central influences on whether members continue to serve. In addition, rising family diversity and complexity will likely increase the difficulty of creating military policies, programs and practices that adequately support families in the performance of military duties. Strengthening the Military Family Readiness System for a Changing American Society examines the challenges and opportunities facing military families and what is known about effective strategies for supporting and protecting military children and families, as well as lessons to be learned from these experiences. This report offers recommendations regarding what is needed to strengthen the support system for military families. |

andrews physical therapy blaine tn: The Cowboy's Companion Paul C. Brady, Patrick J. Denard, 2012-02-14 In the past five years, the techniques used in arthroscopic shoulder surgery have advanced exponentially. The basic principles are the same, but the theories, techniques, and instrumentation have dramatically improved. The Cowboy's Companion: A Trail Guide for the Arthroscopic Shoulder Surgeon is truly a companion book to Burkhart’s View of the Shoulder: A Cowboy's Guide to Advanced Shoulder Arthroscopy, which builds on the principles of the first book and concentrates on the new theories and techniques that have developed since the first book was written. The book is separated into two sections: The Shoulder Roundup, which will be an update on the techniques and ideas that have developed in shoulder surgery and The Shoulder Rodeo, which will be a collection of challenging cases that demonstrate unique approaches to difficult shoulder problems. The text comes with two DVDs that feature advanced interactive technology. The surgical videos will be supplemented with state-of-the-art digitally enhanced illustrations and animations, to create an entirely new 3-dimensional learning environment for the surgeon. |

andrews physical therapy blaine tn: Therapeutic Exercise Frances E. Huber, Christine Lynn Wells, 2006 In response to the increasing need for progressing a treatment plan, this text shows the reader how to prescribe therapeutic exercise based on the best evidence and clinical experience. It teaches therapists how to make informed clinical decisions about the best way to progress treatment for their clients that integrates balance, strength, endurance and all of the areas necessary for optimal function. It also provides the underlying theories of treatment planning, using APTA's Guide to Physical Therapist Practice, 2nd Edition as the basis for practice. Three on-going client cases are woven throughout the text, promoting clinical reasoning skills and providing a framework to construct new knowledge. Learning objectives at the start of each chapter help readers focus their attention on important principles and concepts. Stop and Think questions mixed throughout the chapters show students how to reflect on new information and how it may be applied in a variety of situations. Client vignettes in each chapter illustrate the importance of learning the concepts for transfer to new situations. Concept maps illustrate how the chapter is organized and how elements fit together to provide a framework for constructing knowledge. A focus on the disablement model allows students to apply therapeutic exercise for maximum functionality as defined by the APTA. A focus on research demonstrates the best way to prescribe exercise by focusing on best practice. A companion DVD provides 60 minutes of video clips that gives students the ability to observe an activity, critique the technique, compare and contrast movement in a wide range of ages, select the appropriate exercise for the job and many other applications. |
andrews physical therapy blaine tn: Parasitic Diseases Dickson D. Despommier, Robert W. Gwadz, Peter J. Hotez, 2012-12-06 Worldwide, the numbers of people suffering and dying from parasitic diseases are overwhelming, with more than 100 million cases and 1 million deaths each year from malaria alone. Despite the magnitude of the problem and the importance of the parasites that cause opportunistic infections among persons with HIV/AIDS, medical schools in the United States, Canada, and other developed countries consistently reduce the amount of time spent on parasitic diseases in the curricu lum. As a result most medical students receive limited information about these diseases, and are inadequately prepared to diagnose or treat them as physicians. This problem is too large to be resolved within the time available for parasitology in the medical school curriculum; at most, students can be acquainted with the salient features of the medically important parasites. Likewise, the traditional isolation of parasitology from the rest of the curriculum (consistent with its exclu sion from most microbiology texts) is another unresolved problem. In my opinion, this is why most physicians are unable to think about the differential diagnosis of parasitic diseases in the same way that they routinely balance the probabilities of malignancy, cardiovascular, renal, and pulmonary disease vs other infectious diseases. To resolve these problems, relevant paradigms from parasitology must be used in the teaching of cell biology, molecular biology, genetics, and immu nology. |

With patient handouts that are comprehensive and customizable, this manual is intended for the busy practitioner in any medical specialty who prescribes exercise for musculoskeletal injuries and conditions. The most central aspect of any therapeutic exercise program is the patient’s ability to perform the exercises effectively and routinely at home. This book is organized by major body regions from neck to foot and covers the breadth of home exercises for problems in each area based on the current literature.
