annapolis office of emergency management: Some People Watch Clocks to Tell What Time It Is, I Watch People to Know What Time It Is Carl O. Snowden, 2020-06-01 The opinion columns that were written by civil-rights activist Carl Snowden are both poignant and powerful. These columns address issues involving race, immigration, politics, guns, violence and history. Snowden’s analysis of contemporary issues are based on a lifetime of community activism. His analysis of politics is based on his experience as a former elected official. His penetrating discussion on race issues is from the perspective of a black man that not only lived during the American segregation era, but also as a person who helped his city divest from the racist Republic of South Africa in the 1990s during the height of apartheid. Snowden’s columns on personalities ranging from Oprah Winfrey to Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X are always coupled with the unique perspective of that of an activist. His views on the contemporary issues of our day makes for a good read. A Luta Continua This book is dedicated to my late loving mother - Mrs. Ora Snowden, my sons, and my soulmate. |
annapolis office of emergency management: The National Security Enterprise Roger Z. George, Harvey Rishikof, 2017 This second edition of The National Security Enterprise provides practitioners' insights into the operation, missions, and organizational cultures of the principal national security agencies and other significant institutions that shape the US national security decision-making process. Unlike some textbooks on American foreign policy, this book provides analysis from insiders who have worked at the National Security Council, the State Department, Department of Defense, the intelligence community, and the other critical entities included in the book. The book explains how organizational missions and cultures create the labyrinth in which a coherent national security policy must be fashioned. Understanding and appreciating these organizations and their cultures is essential for formulating and implementing coherent policies. This second edition includes four new chapters (Congress, DHS, Treasury, and USAID) and updates to the text throughout. It covers the many changes instituted by the Obama administration, implications of the government campaign to prosecute leaks, and lessons learned from more than a decade of war in Afghanistan and Iraq. |

annapolis office of emergency management: Greening Our Built World Greg Kats, 2013-03-05 “Green” buildings—buildings that use fewer resources to build and to sustain—are commonly thought to be too expensive to attract builders and buyers. But are they? The answer to this question has enormous consequences, since residential and commercial buildings together account for nearly 50% of American energy consumption—including at least 75% of electricity usage—according to recent government statistics. This eye-opening book reports the results of a large-scale study based on extensive financial and technical analyses of more than 150 green buildings in the U.S. and ten other countries. It provides detailed findings on the costs and financial benefits of building green. According to the study, green buildings cost roughly 2% more to build than conventional buildings—far less than previously assumed—and provide a wide range of financial, health and social benefits. In addition, green buildings reduce energy use by an average of 33%, resulting in significant cost savings. Greening Our Built World also evaluates the cost effectiveness of “green community development” and presents the results of the first-ever survey of green buildings constructed by faith-based organizations. Throughout the book, leading practitioners in green design—including architects, developers, and property owners—share their own experiences in building green. A compelling combination of rock-solid facts and specific examples, this book proves that green design is both cost-effective and earth-friendly. |

annapolis office of emergency management: Disaster Policy and Politics Richard T. Sylves, 2019-02-13 Disaster Policy and Politics combines evidence-based research with mini-case studies of recent events to demonstrate the fundamental principles of emergency management and to explore the impact that disasters have had on U.S. policy. Paying special attention to the role of key actors—decision makers at the federal, state, and local levels; scientists; engineers; civil and military personnel; and first responders—author Richard Sylves explores how researchers contribute to and engage in disaster policy development and management. The highly anticipated Third Edition explores the radical change in policy and politics after the occurrence of recent disasters such as Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria; Hawaii’s false nuclear attack warning; and responses to U.S. wildfires. This book’s comprehensive “all-hazards” approach introduces students to the important public policy, organizational management, and leadership issues they may need as future practitioners and leaders in the field. |

annapolis office of emergency management: Catastrophic Disaster Planning and Response Clifford Oliver, 2010-07-20 Presenting cutting-edge domestic and international approaches, Catastrophic Disaster Planning and Response explains how to effectively plan for and manage the consequences of a catastrophe. Recognizing that a business-as-usual approach to preparing for and responding to such events is doomed to fail, the book fills a gap in emergency management education. It introduces the many considerations that influence how we plan for and respond to large-scale catastrophes and how it differs from preparing for smaller-scale emergencies. Written by a recognized expert in emergency management, this volume is a thorough study of the planning process and response procedures for catastrophic disasters. Topics discussed include: The history of catastrophic events, both in and outside the United States How catastrophes differ from disasters and emergencies and how they are all part of the emergency management continuum The varying definitions of catastrophes and their political and societal implications The main ethical and value dilemmas that one will likely face before, during, and after a catastrophe The legal framework associated with government response to catastrophes The post-catastrophic environment that an emergency manager might experience, with a focus on logistics, critical infrastructure, mass care, and mass evacuation Planning strategies and skills an emergency manager can employ to mitigate the effects of such an event The use of crisis leadership skills and how to lead and influence others in a catastrophic situation Recent major events provide valuable lessons that demonstrate the characteristics of a catastrophic disaster, the special issues of response and recovery, and the necessary preparation on international, national, and local levels. Offering best practices using recent real-world case studies, the book provides a foundation for continued study and critical reflection. Catastrophic Disaster Planning and Response is one of only two books utilized by the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) in their elite 2010 Flag Office/SES Executive Change Leadership Program (ECL) curriculum. The ECL program develops the executive leadership skills of USCG Admiral-selects awaiting Senate confirmation, as well as members of the Department of Homeland Security's federal Senior Executive Service (SES), which in 2010 included representatives from the U.S. Secret Service, the Transportation Security Administration, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the U.S. Border Patrol, Citizenship and Immigration Services, and FEMA. Readily adaptable for classroom use, this cutting-edge professional reference provides qualifying instructors with access to teaching materials and a test bank. |

She earned her Bachelor of Science in Organizational Behavior from the University of San Francisco. Under Two Flags chronicles not just her achievements in volunteer service to numerous organizations but how she expressed her values of social justice and combating discrimination.
