arcadia management area photos: Saving Arcadia Heather Shumaker, 2017-01-04 A David and Goliath conservation story set on Lake Michigan. Saving Arcadia: A Story of Conservation and Community in the Great Lakes is a suspenseful and intimate land conservation adventure story set in the Great Lakes heartland. The story spans more than forty years, following the fate of a magnificent sand dune on Lake Michigan and the people who care about it. Author and narrator Heather Shumaker shares the remarkable untold stories behind protecting land and creating new nature preserves. Written in a compelling narrative style, the book is intended in part as a case study for landscape-level conservation and documents the challenges of integrating economic livelihoods into conservation and what it really means to preserve land over time. This is the story of a small band of determined townspeople and how far they went to save beloved land and endangered species from the grip of a powerful corporation. Saving Arcadia is a narrative with roots as deep as the trees the community is trying to save, something set in motion before the author was even born. And yet, Shumaker gives a human face to the changing nature of land conservation in the twenty-first century. Throughout this chronicle we meet people like Elaine, a nineteen-year-old farm wife; Dori, a lakeside innkeeper; and Glen, the director of the local land trust. Together with hundreds of others they cross cultural barriers and learn to help one another in an effort to win back the six-thousand-acre landscape taken over by Consumers Power that is now facing grave devastation. The result is a triumph of community that includes working farms, local businesses, summer visitors, year-round residents, and a network of land stewards. A work of creative nonfiction, Saving Arcadia is the adventurous tale of everyday people fighting to reclaim the land that has been in their family for generations. It explores ideas about nature and community, and anyone from scholars of ecology and conservation biology to readers of naturalist writing can gain from Arcadia's story. Winner of the Eric Hoffer Book Award; The Next Generation Indie Book Award; and the Michigan Notable Book Award. |
arcadia management area photos: Theatres of San Francisco Jack Tillmany, 2005 You read the sad stories in the papers: another ornate, 1920s, single-screen theatre closes, to be demolished and replaced by a strip mall. That's progress, and in this 20-screen multiplex world, it's happening more and more. Only a handful of the 100 or so neighborhood theatres that once graced these streets are left in San Francisco, but they live on in the photographs featured in this book. The heyday of such venues as the Clay, Noe, Metro, New Mission, Alexandria, Coronet, Fox, Uptown, Coliseum, Surf, El Rey, and Royal was a time when San Franciscans thronged to the movies and vaudeville shows, dressed to the hilt, to see and be seen in majestic art deco palaces. Unfortunately, this era has passed into history despite the dedicated efforts of many neighborhood preservation groups. |

arcadia management area photos: Urban Stormwater Management in the United States National Research Council, Division on Earth and Life Studies, Water Science and Technology Board, Committee on Reducing Stormwater Discharge Contributions to Water Pollution, 2009-03-17 The rapid conversion of land to urban and suburban areas has profoundly altered how water flows during and following storm events, putting higher volumes of water and more pollutants into the nation's rivers, lakes, and estuaries. These changes have degraded water quality and habitat in virtually every urban stream system. The Clean Water Act regulatory framework for addressing sewage and industrial wastes is not well suited to the more difficult problem of stormwater discharges. This book calls for an entirely new permitting structure that would put authority and accountability for stormwater discharges at the municipal level. A number of additional actions, such as conserving natural areas, reducing hard surface cover (e.g., roads and parking lots), and retrofitting urban areas with features that hold and treat stormwater, are recommended. |

However, they are often constrained by lack of adequate resources, sound policies, and national support. It is clear that change and advancements, both systematic and scientific, are needed in a number of forensic science disciplines to ensure the reliability of work, establish enforceable standards, and promote best practices with consistent application. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States: A Path Forward provides a detailed plan for addressing these needs and suggests the creation of a new government entity, the National Institute of Forensic Science, to establish and enforce standards within the forensic science community. The benefits of improving and regulating the forensic science disciplines are clear: assisting law enforcement officials, enhancing homeland security, and reducing the risk of wrongful conviction and exoneration. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States gives a full account of what is needed to advance the forensic science disciplines, including upgrading of systems and organizational structures, better training, widespread adoption of uniform and enforceable best practices, and mandatory certification and accreditation programs. While this book provides an essential call-to-action for congress and policy makers, it also serves as a vital tool for law enforcement agencies, criminal prosecutors and attorneys, and forensic science educators. |

arcadia management area photos: Elasmobranch Biodiversity, Conservation and Management Sarah L. Fowler, Tim M. Reed, Frances Dipper, 2002 The Darwin Elasmobranch Biodiversity Conservation and Management project in Sabah held a three-day international seminar that included a one-day workshop in order to highlight freshwater and coastal elasmobranch conservation issues in the region and worldwide, to disseminate the result of the project to other Malaysian states and countries, and to raise awareness of the importance of considering aspects of elasmobranch biodiversity in the context of nature conservation, commercial fisheries management, and for subsistence fishing communities. These proceedings contain numerous peer-reviewed papers originally presented at the seminar, which cover a wide range of topics, with particular reference to species from freshwater and estuarine habitats. The workshop served to develop recommendations concerning the future prospects of elasmobranch fisheries, biodiversity, conservation and management. This paper records those conclusions, which highlight the importance of elasmobranchs as top marine predators and keystone species, noting that permanent damage to shark and ray populations are likely to have serious and unexpected negative consequences for commercial and subsistence yields of other important fish stocks. |

arcadia management area photos: Conesus Lake Sharon L. Mistretta, 2014-07-21 See how Conensus Lake has grown to become a Finger Lakes tourist hotspot. Conesus Lake is the westernmost of the 11 Finger Lakes. Often referred to as one of the Little Fingers, it is located about 25 miles south of Rochester, New York. In 1924, the City of Rochester announced plans to use Conesus Lake to supplement the water supply for its residents. A year later, cottagers around the lake successfully banded together to protect Conesus's sparkling waters and preserve the area as a summer resort. Over time, the lake area has grown, and restaurants, taverns, campgrounds, and amusement parks have sprung up from the demand of the lake's many visitors. Today, four towns--Geneseo, Groveland, Conesus, and Livonia--border the approximate 18 miles of shoreline. |
arcadia management area photos: The Civilian Conservation Corps Leo Caisse, 2019-04 In 1933, President Franklin Roosevelt created the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) as part of his New Deal legislation. The CCC provided unskilled manual labor jobs related to the conservation and development of natural resources on rural government lands. The CCC was designed for men and to relieve families who had difficulty finding jobs. Over 3 million young men would serve in the CCC nationwide. In Rhode Island, from Newport to Glocester, and from North Smithfield to Hope Valley, camps popped up to remake our own state's natural public places. Today, the efforts of those proud young men can be seen still in various stages of restoration and decay. This book provides a unique photographic glimpse at what remains of this important piece of little-known Rhode Island history. |

arcadia management area photos: Harrisburg and the Susquehanna River Erik V. Fasick, 2015-03-02 In 1719, pioneer John Harris settled along the banks of the Susquehanna River and began a new era in the relationship between the inhabitants of what would later become the Greater Harrisburg area and a river that would provide them with economic opportunity, leisure, and sometimes misery. Spanning the Susquehanna in the 19th century were bridges that funneled raw materials and a growing workforce in the capital city, which thrived during the age of industry. However, the late 19th century brought a shift toward revitalization and beautification of the riverfront and islands with the construction of the Riverfront Steps, Dock Street Dam, beaches, parks, and gardens that were showcased through large public events such as the Kipona festival. This revitalization was again renewed in the late 20th century with the reimagining of City Island as an entertainment complex hosting concerts and sports franchises such as the minor-league baseball team the Harrisburg Senators. |

It was also meant to be the epitome of Frederick Law Olmsted's distinguished career as the father of American landscape architecture. Its 527 acres of open space have been a salvation from urban plight and also the center of urban controversy. Today the community around the park remains strong and depends upon the work of volunteers, advocacy groups, and the City of Boston. The photographs in Franklin Park have been collected from a variety of personal collections and public archives in an effort to illustrate the park's history from its inception in the 1880s through its rebirth in the 1990s. |

Through his columns in the Providence Journal and his books, including the recently published companion volume to this one, More Walks and Rambles in Rhode Island, Ken has educated Rhode Islanders to the joys of this gentle sport. This second edition has been thoroughly updated by the author - almost half the walks have been substantially revised. Each of the 40 walks includes a map, hiking times and distances, an overview of the special features of the walk and its level of difficulty, directions on getting to the trailhead, and a two - to three-page description. There is also tremendous diversity to these 40 outings: one can choose from beach walks, woods walks, wetlands walks, and even island walks. Many of them, moreover, are suitable for families with children. |
