are small business loans fixed or variable: Bank Lending in the Knowledge Economy Mr.Giovanni Dell'Ariccia, Dalida Kadyrzhanova, Ms.Camelia Minoiu, Mr.Lev Ratnovski, 2017-11-07 We study bank portfolio allocations during the transition of the real sector to a knowledge economy in which firms use less tangible capital and invest more in intangible assets. We show that, as firms shift toward intangible assets that have lower collateral values, banks reallocate their portfolios away from commercial loans toward other assets, primarily residential real estate loans and liquid assets. This effect is more pronounced for large and less well capitalized banks and is robust to controlling for real estate loan demand. Our results suggest that increased firm investment in intangible assets can explain up to 20% of bank portfolio reallocation from commercial to residential lending over the last four decades. |

are small business loans fixed or variable: Understanding the Development of Small Business Policy Thomas M. Cooney, 2020-04-29 It is not widely understood that the importance of small businesses only became apparent with the publication of David Birch’s book The Job Generation Process in 1979. Over the past four decades, governments across the globe have struggled to design, implement and evaluate policies that benefit the development of small firms. Deciding whether macro or micro policies are more appropriate for a given context has usually created an initial challenge for policy-makers. However, a cause for even greater dispute has been determining and agreeing what might be the preferred outcomes of such policies (e.g. more firms, better performing firms, fewer firm failures, job creation, greater productivity, higher levels of innovation, inclusivity of disadvantaged groups). Furthermore, evaluating the impact of specific policies presents a wide range of difficulties since it is impossible to isolate a simple cause-and-effect relationship between policy and its stated goal. This book explores the development of small business policy in five countries across five continents and seeks to develop a deeper understanding regarding how small business policy has evolved in these countries and what we might learn from their experiences. This book was originally published as a special issue of Small Enterprise Research. |

are small business loans fixed or variable: Financing Small Business in America Roger E. Hamlin, Thomas S. Lyons, 2003-10-30 Examining the role of the public sector in small-business debt-capital formation, this book describes current approaches, conceptually and pragmatically, and evaluates their advantages and disadvantages from a variety of perspectives. It also suggests a model for improving our approach to small business capital formation in the United States. Financing small business creation and expansion has always been difficult. Private debt capital providers tend to avoid small business because the latter are preceived to be too risky. Yet because of the importance of small businesses to national economic growth, stability, and innovation, ensuring that these businesses can obtain and effectively use appropriate levels of debt capital is vital to national well-being. How, and to what extent, should the public sector intervene in the debt capital markets to ensure that sufficient capital flows to small businesses? This book is an attempt to answer that question. |

are small business loans fixed or variable: The Entrepreneur’S Edge Ii Daniel R. Hogan Jr., PhD, 2016-08-18 There are many reasons for business failure, chief among which is management. Invariably, entrepreneurs / business owners usually blame outside forces for their shortcomings or ill luck. Often the very traits that lead them to launch an entrepreneurial enterprise are the traits that lead to the final demise of their dreams. The internal locus of control and if its going to be its up to me attitude that entrepreneurs possess and acknowledge as a factor of success is rejected as a contributing factor of failure. The reason for trouble and a resultant failure is most often attributed to the lack of capital and the lack of the ability, knowledge, and capacity to obtain capital both in the form of debt and equity and, most prevalent, the lack of positive cash flow. This book will help the entrepreneur who may be well versed in a given field, expertise, or industry to fill the ever-present task of constantly seeking required capital. In addition to the increasing management, communication, and people skills that the perhaps technically talented enterpriser must soon master is the realization that he/she must also always seek capital if the business is to survive and grow. Capital, working capital, positive cash flow is the lifeblood of the business. Without it, there is no growth, no survival, and no life. In the entrepreneurs enthusiasm, the zeal to achieve the vision, the exhilaration and activity of the moment, the need for money, and a timely positive cash flow are often overlooked. They are the very life force of the business, the oxygen for the venture, without which it will die. The Entrepreneurs Edge ll will assist the planning necessary in finding the money, raising the money, making the money, and keeping the money. It, along with the accompanying books in the series (The Entrepreneurs Edge: Finding the Money, The Entrepreneur Manager: The Business Mans Business Plan, The Entrepreneurs Guide to Start, Grow, and Manage a Profitable Business, and Economics Entrepreneurship Ethics : The Es of Business), helps to fill the toolbox necessary for every entrepreneur and business manager. |
