In the early 1950s, Goodman, Quine, and White published a series of papers that threatened to torpedo fundamental assumptions of traditional philosophy. They advocated repudiating analyticity, necessity, and prior assumptions. Some philosophers, realizing the seismic effects repudiation would cause, argued that philosophy should retain the familiar framework. Others considered the arguments compelling, but despaired of doing philosophy without the framework. Goodman disagreed with both factions. Rather than regretting the loss of structure, he capitalized on the opportunities that arise when the strictures of tradition are loosened.

But could a new science of wholeness heal what the old science of the machine had wrought? Some contemporary scientists thought it could. These years saw the spread of a new, holistic science designed to nourish the heart as well as the head, to reenchant even as it explained. Critics since have linked this holism to a German irrationalism that is supposed to have paved the way to Nazism. In a penetrating analysis of this science, Anne Harrington shows that in fact the story of holism in Germany is a politically heterogeneous story with multiple endings. Its alliances with Nazism were not inevitable, but resulted from reorganizational processes that ultimately brought commitments to wholeness and race, healing and death into a common framework. Before 1933, holistic science was a uniquely authoritative voice in cultural debates on the costs of modernization. It attracted not only scientists with Nazi sympathies but also moderates and leftists, some of whom left enduring humanistic legacies. Neither a reduction of science to its politics, nor a vision in which the sociocultural environment is a backdrop to the internal work of science, this story instead emphasizes how metaphor and imagery allow science to engage real phenomena of the laboratory in ways that are richly generative of human meanings and porous to the social and political imperatives of the hour.

La France doit affirmer davantage sa participation aux grands programmes-cadres de l'Union européenne, qui ont déjà contribué au décloisonnement des équipes, même si l'Académie reconnaît l'urgence d'une simplification des procédures et la nécessité d'une intervention plus directe des scientifiques dans l'établissement et le suivi de ces programmes. Par ailleurs, il apparaît nécessaire que la communauté scientifique française prenne mieux en compte les enjeux sociétaux et les problèmes éthiques dans un contexte d'ensemble où l'image de la science perd parfois de sa force. Au-delà des propositions liées à chacune des disciplines traitées, les auteurs formulent des recommandations visant à adapter le système français de recherche/développement et d'enseignement aux nouvelles données scientifiques et économiques.

Joy, 2016 Recent forms of realism in continental philosophy that are habitually subsumed under the category of speculative realism, a denomination referring to rather heterogeneous strands of philosophy, bringing together object-oriented ontology (OOO), non-standard philosophy (or non-philosophy), the speculative realist ideas of Quentin Meillassoux and Marxism, have provided grounds for the much needed critique of culturalism in gender theory, and the authority with which post-structuralism has dominated feminist theory for decades. This publication aims to bring forth some of the feminist debates prompted by the so-called speculative turn, while demonstrating that there has never been a niche of speculative realist feminism. Whereas most of the contributions featured in this collection provide a theoretical approach invoking the necessity of foregrounding new forms of realism for a feminism beyond gender as culture, some of the essays tackle OOO only to invite a feminist critical challenge to its paradigm, while others refer to some extent to non-philosophy or the new materialisms but are not reducible to either of the two. We have invited essays from intellectual milieus outside the Anglo-Saxon academic center, bringing together authors from Serbia, Slovenia, France, Ireland, the UK, and Canada, aiming to promote feminist internationalism (rather than a generous act of cultural inclusion).
