audrey hepburn education and awards: Audrey Hepburn: Biography of Hollywood's Greatest Movie Actress Sara McEwen, 2012-07-30 ABOUT THE BOOK Audrey Hepburn was a rare beauty who managed to be just as graceful and captivating on the inside as she was on the outside. Her lithe dancer's body, large dark eyes and effortlessly chic clothing have made Hepburn a fashion icon for decades, no matter how many other trends may come and go. At the same time, Hepburn's refined and charming personality captured her fans' hearts, and her charity work was an important part of her life up until her final years. With her characteristic and unique blend of tomboy, ballerina and socialite personas, Hepburn worked hard to make her way into the ranks of Hollywood A-listers, but never forgot to stay true to her roots and genuinely care for those in need. After a childhood that was marked with tragedy and hardship, from losing her father to enduring the trials of World War II, Hepburn persevered and quickly became a role model for many people. She showed the world that it was possible to have a blend of poise and playfulness, to be a movie star and a humanitarian at the same time. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK In the late 1980s, however, Hepburn turned her attention to charity work and humanitarian projects. Ever since her own struggles in the war, Hepburn had been focused on UNICEF's efforts, usually by acting as a spokesperson. Now that her movie career was over, Hepburn was able to travel and work firsthand with the struggling and underserved populations of countries such as Ethiopia and Turkey. She traveled the world to help with UNICEF's education programs and relief efforts. Hepburn also used her celebrity to bring attention to the problems of struggling countries and population, solidifying her reputation as, not just a beautiful face, but also as a dedicated and kind-hearted diplomat and humanitarian. In 1992, following a trip to Somalia, Hepburn felt concerned about some strange abdominal pains. When she went to a medical professional, her whole family was stunned to learn that Hepburn had a rare form of abdominal cancer. It had already spread too far for surgery to be successful. Knowing that she was nearing her final days, Hepburn and her family went to Switzerland to spend time together. Hepburn died in her sleep on January 20, 1993, leaving behind not just a family who mourned her beautiful and warm presence, but also a whole world that would miss the generous and inimitable Audrey Hepburn...   audrey hepburn education and awards: Dutch Girl Robert Matzen, 2019-04-15 Twenty-five years after her passing, Audrey Hepburn remains the most beloved of all Hollywood stars, known as much for her role as UNICEF ambassador as for films like Roman Holiday and Breakfast at Tiffany's. Several biographies have chronicled her stardom, but none has covered her intense experiences through five years of Nazi occupation in the Netherlands. According to her son, Luca Dotti, The war made my mother who she was. Audrey Hepburn's war included participation in the Dutch Resistance, working as a doctor's assistant during the Bridge Too Far battle of Arnhem, the brutal execution of her uncle, and the ordeal of the Hunger Winter of 1944. She also had to contend with the fact that her father was a Nazi agent and her mother was pro-Nazi for the first two years of the occupation. But the war years also brought triumphs as Audrey became Arnhem's most famous young ballerina. Audrey's own reminiscences, new interviews with people who knew her in the war, wartime diaries, and research in classified Dutch archives shed light on the riveting, untold story of Audrey Hepburn under fire in World War II. Also included is a section of color and black-and-white photos. Many of these images are from Audrey's personal collection and are published here for the first time.

audrey hepburn education and awards: Warrior Robert Matzen, 2021-09-28 UNICEF thought that with my mother they would get a pretty princess to show up at galas. What they really got was a badass soldier. – Luca Dotti, Audrey Hepburn's son. Warrior: Audrey Hepburn completes the story arc of Robert Matzen's Dutch Girl: Audrey Hepburn and World War II. Hepburn's experiences in wartime, including the murder of family members, her survival through combat and starvation conditions, and work on behalf of the Dutch Resistance, gave her the determination to become a humanitarian for UNICEF and the fearlessness to charge into war-torn countries in the Third World on behalf of children and their mothers in desperate need. She set the standard for celebrity humanitarians and--according to her son Luca Dotti--ultimately gave her life for the causes she espoused.

audrey hepburn education and awards: Fifth Avenue, 5 A.M. Sam Wasson, 2011-09-25 Before Breakfast at Tiffany’s Audrey Hepburn was still a little-known actress with few film roles to speak of; after it – indeed, because of it - she was one of the world’s most famous fashion, style and screen icons. It was this film that matched her with Hubert de Givenchy’s “little black dress”. Meanwhile, Truman Capote’s original novel is itself a modern classic selling huge numbers every year, and its high-living author of perennial interest. Now, this little book tells the story of how it all happened: how Audrey got the role (for which at first she wasn’t considered, and which she at first didn’t want); how long it took to get the script right; how it made Blake Edwards’ name as a director after too many trashy films had failed to; and how Henry Mancini’s soundtrack with its memorable signature tune ‘Moon River’ completed the irresistible package. This is the story of how one shy, uncertain, inexperienced young actress was persuaded to take on a role she at first thought too hard-edged and amoral – and how it made Audrey Hepburn into gamine, elusive Holly Golightly in the little black dress - and a star for the rest of her life.

audrey hepburn education and awards: The Uncommon Reader Alan Bennett, 2007-09-18 From one of England's most celebrated writers, a funny and superbly observed novella about the Queen of England and the subversive power of reading When her corgis stray into a mobile library parked near Buckingham Palace, the Queen feels duty-bound to borrow a book. Discovering the joy of reading widely (from J. R. Ackerley, Jean Genet, and Ivy Compton-Burnett to the classics) and intelligently, she finds that her view of the world changes dramatically. Abetted in her newfound obsession by Norman, a young man from the royal kitchens, the Queen comes to question the prescribed order of the world and loses patience with the routines of her role as monarch. Her new passion for reading initially alarms the palace staff and soon leads to surprising and very funny consequences for the country at large. With the poignant and mischievous wit of The History Boys, England's best loved author Alan Bennett revels in the power of literature to change even the most uncommon reader's life.

audrey hepburn education and awards: Notable Americans of Czechoslovak Ancestry in Arts and Letters and in Education Miloslav Rechcigl Jr., 2021-11-02 As pointed out in my last two publications, no comprehensive study has been undertaken about the American Learned Men and Women with Czechoslovak roots. The aim of this work is to correct this glaring deficiency, with the focus on immigration from the period of mass migration and beyond, irrespective whether they were born in their European ancestral homes or whether they have descended from them. Whereas in the two mentioned monographs, the emphasis has been on scholars and social and natural scientists; and men and women in medicine, applied sciences and engineering, respectively, the present compendium deals with notable Americans of Czechoslovak ancestry in arts and letters, and in education. With respect to women, although most professional fields were closed to them through much of the nineteenth century, the area of arts and letters was opened to them, as noted earlier and as this compendium authenticates.

audrey hepburn education and awards: In the Scene: Jane Campion Ellen Cheshire, 2018-05-09 A comprehensive overview of the director Jane Campion and her work. Campion is one of the few women film-makers working today who has managed to create a unique body of work. A true independent film-maker, she has attracted many ‘A’ List Hollywood actors to appear in her films. Who else but Campion could have convinced a tattooed Harvey Keitel to run buck-naked through the New Zealand landscape in The Piano, or for the multi award-winning Kate Winslet to pee down her legs in the middle of the desert in Holy Smoke? Campion is also an outspoken champion in recent debates about the lack of women in senior creative positions within the film industry. This book covers Jane Campion’s remarkable career from her Palme d’Or winning debut short film Peel to her recent return to television with the Top of the Lake series, reflecting on the influence of her study in anthropology as well as her formative years growing up in New Zealand. Reviews “Ellen Cheshire’s rich and thoughtful study accessibly and incisively gets us to the heart of why Jane Campion’s films connect with viewers around the world. This book is hugely enjoyable and insightful.” -- James Clarke, Writer, Media Labs, what you need to know. I've been fascinated with Jane Campion's career ever since I saw The Piano make its debut at the movie theater. Ellen Cheshire did a very good job in detailing the gifted Campion's brilliant career... ****-- Diane H, NetGalley The strength of the book for me is the critical analysis from early short films to box office successes, ranging from the actors involved and the awards gained. I particularly like the appraisal of mood, colour, camera angles and locations which brings the movies alive again for me. A bit like those special box sets and DVDs that carried extra edited bits and alternative scenes/endings. **** -- Richard L, Net Galley About the author Ellen Cheshire has a BA (Hons) in Film and English and a MA in Gothic Studies and has taught Film at Undergraduate and A Level. She has published books on Bio-Pics, Audrey Hepburn and The Coen Brothers and contributed chapters to books on James Bond, Charlie Chaplin, Global Film-making, Film Form, Fantasy Films and War Movies. Fikry and Young Jane Young “We’ve been waiting for an hour.” That’s what Audrey says. She states it with a little bit of an edge, her words just bordering on cursive. That’s the thing I think first.   audrey hepburn education and awards: The Elegant Woman Eunice Leong, 2013-09-27 Fashion may come and go, beauty may fade, but elegance is forever. In an attempt to feel more comfortable in a more elegant crowd, I endeavored to find ways to assimilate. I didn't think I could keep up by buying more Chanel bags, and thankfully I realized later that I didn't have to! Elegance is so much more than beautiful things. I wanted to be like Audrey Hepburn, but I wondered how to translate old school manners and classic dressing into this modern world. I didn't want to be like the woman who looked stuck in the 50s. This book was based on my journey about learning to be elegant without losing myself and becoming someone I'm not. I've since realized that there is more to being elegant than becoming the stereotypical 'elegant woman'. You can wear your own version of elegance, as long as principles of elegance remain. You don't even have to like pearls (though, they are very tasteful.) This book is written for all those who feel they need more ideas for a little more elegance, confidence and beauty. Most of all, I hope they find encouragement that they too can live a beautiful life regardless of budget or circumstance.

Implementing the Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) Competencies in Healthcare clears up that confusion and serves as a guide for clinicians, leaders, faculty, EBP mentors, and students in achieving EBP competency, facilitating evidence-based decision making in daily practice, and accelerating the speed at which research knowledge is translated into real-world settings to improve health outcomes and decrease healthcare costs. Authors Bernadette Mazurek Melnyk, Lynn Gallagher-Ford, and Ellen Fineout-Overholt provide step-by-step explanations and case scenarios that illustrate realistic advice and ready-to-use resources to help organizations integrate EBP broadly and deeply across their infrastructure to improve patient care quality and safety.

audrey hepburn education and awards: Audrey Hepburn Martin Gitlin, 2009-03-05 From the moment she appeared on the American silver screen as a runaway princess in Roman Holiday, Audrey Hepburn was beloved by critics and audiences alike. From her childhood activism in the Dutch resistance movement during World War II, to her extensive film career, her charity work for UNICEF, and her roles as a wife, mother, and fashion icon, Audrey Hepburn's place in American cultural history is brought to life for a new generation of readers. Featuring illustrations, a timeline of events, a selected bibliography, and an appendix of Hepburn's film, stage, and TV appearances, this volume will appeal to students of American studies, American history, film, and popular culture. A graceful and diminutive presence onscreen, Hepburn breathed life into some of the most iconic film roles in Hollywood history. To study her life is to study American fashion and culture, especially classic films of the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Her story also illuminates the experience of everyday people living in Europe during World War II, and the possibilities of modern-day activism as exemplified in her work for UNICEF in the 80s and early 90s. From her childhood activism in the Dutch resistance movement during World War II, to her extensive film career, her charity work for UNICEF. With entertaining flair, this engaging biography explores the life and work of one of the most beloved actresses ever to grace the stage and screen. Readers will explore the German occupation of her hometown during World War II and her anti-Nazi resistance activities, her early stage roles and her discovery by French novelist Colette, who cast her in the stage production of Gigi, her status as fashion icon, and a behind-the-scenes look into the casting and filming of some of her most well-known films, including Breakfast at Tiffany's, Sabrina, and My Fair Lady.
audrey hepburn education and awards: Growing Up With Audrey Hepburn Rachel Moseley, 2002 Growing up with Audrey Hepburn is the first full-length academic study of one of the most loved stars of Hollywood cinema. A study of both Hepburn's star persona and films, it is also an audience study, using interviews to explore accounts given by British women who have admired her in the 1950s and 1960s, and, more recently, in the 1990s.
audrey hepburn education and awards: Just Being Audrey Margaret Cardillo, 2011-01-25 From Roman Holiday to Breakfast at Tiffany's, when Audrey Hepburn starred in a movie, she lit up the screen. Her unique sense of fashion, her grace, and, most important, her spirit made her beloved by generations. But her life offscreen was even more luminous. As a little girl growing up in Nazi-occupied Europe, she learned early on that true kindness is the greatest measure of a person—and it was a lesson she embodied as she became one of the first actresses to use her celebrity to shine a light on the impoverished children of the world through her work with UNICEF. This is Audrey Hepburn as a little girl, an actress, an icon, an inspiration; this is Audrey just being Audrey.
audrey hepburn education and awards: Audrey and Bill Edward Z. Epstein, 2015-04-14 Here for the first time is the complete, captivating story of an on-set romance that turned into a lifelong love story between silver screen legends Audrey Hepburn and William Holden. In 1954, Hepburn and Holden were America’s sweethearts. Both won Oscars that year and together they filmed Sabrina, a now-iconic film that continues to inspire the worlds of film and fashion. Audrey & Bill tells the stories of both stars, from before they met to their electrifying first encounter when they began making Sabrina. The love affair that sparked on-set was relatively short-lived, but was a turning point in the lives of both stars. Audrey & Bill follows both Hepburn and Holden as their lives crisscrossed through to the end, providing an inside look at the Hollywood of the 1950s, ’60s, and beyond. Through in-depth research and interviews with former friends, co-stars, and studio workers, Audrey & Bill author Edward Z. Epstein sheds new light on the stars and the fascinating times in which they lived.
