authority weight management dog food: Dog of the Decade Deborah Thompson, 2021-11-05 What do dogs mean in America? How do Americans make meaning through their dogs? The United States has long expressed its cultural unconscious through canine iconography. Through our dogs, we figure out what we're thinking and who we are, representing by proxy the things that we don't quite want to recognize in ourselves. Often, it's a specific breed or type of dog that serves as an informal cultural mascot, embodying an era's needs, fears, desires, longings, aspirations, repressions, and hopeless contradictions. Combining cultural studies with personal narrative, this book creates a playful, speculative reading of American culture through its canine self-representations. Looking at seven different breeds or types over the last seven decades, readers will go on an intellectual dog walk through some of the mazes of American cultural mythology. |

authority weight management dog food: The Handbook of Veterinary Care and Management of the Military Working Dog - Including Anesthesia / Pain Management Standards , 2017-10-17 PREFACE Since 9/11 the veterinary care of Military Working Dogs (MWDs) has assumed a greater importance. The role of the working dog has never been more visible and more appreciated. At this writing there are a large number of MWDs deployed throughout the world in support of the Global War on Terrorism. Many people both in and out of uniform are coming to realize that MWDs are among the most valuable and cost-effective counterterrorism tools we have. Before 9/11 detector dogs and their skills were largely taken for granted, even downplayed. Comments like: “MWDs are low-tech”; and “Dogs will be replaced by sensors, imaging techniques and computers” were not uncommon. Detector dogs have become a very visible front-line protective measure against bomb threats – check out the headlines on suicide bombers to see what our terrorist enemies are up to. Then check out the film clips that show security forces in action – the dogs are everywhere! These are reminders that no other tool in the arsenal can match the efficiency, mobility, adaptability and field readiness of a working dog. So, what’s new – why publish a new edition now? Yes 9/11 did change things – this edition now has guidelines for MWDs exposed to Anthrax. This third edition of the Handbook also contains new information about the prophylactic laparoscopic-assisted gastropexy program that aims to protect our most “at-risk” dogs from GDV. We also provide guidelines on transitioning from once daily feeding to feeding two “meals” a day; the Dog Center now feeds over 500 MWDs twice a day. Additionally we have updated information about MWD Adoption – a program that has come of age in the 2 years since the publication of the second edition. Also in an effort to provide a “one-stop” resource for working dog policy, this edition now incorporates topics that were formerly available only as VETCOM policy letters. These and other revisions make this new MWD Handbook one of the most up to date resources for military veterinarians caring for MWD’s and other Federal Agency working dogs. All veterinary personnel involved in anesthesia should familiarize themselves with these standards, as some previously used agents (such as butorphanol / acepromazine / glycopyrrolate combination, tiletamine / zolazepam, and xylazine) have been removed from the guidance The world will continue to change and our veterinary care will also change as our knowledge, new technology, and improved therapeutics become available. Our commitment to the health care of MWDs is a constant. Keep up the good work! |

authority weight management dog food: Switch Chip Heath, Dan Heath, 2010-02-16 Why is it so hard to make lasting changes in our companies, in our communities, and in our own lives? The primary obstacle is a conflict that's built into our brains, say Chip and Dan Heath, authors of the critically acclaimed bestseller Made to Stick. Psychologists have discovered that our minds are ruled by two different systems - the rational mind and the emotional mind—that compete for control. The rational mind wants a great beach body; the emotional mind wants that Oreo cookie. The rational mind wants to change something at work; the emotional mind loves the comfort of the existing routine. This tension can doom a change effort - but if it is overcome, change can come quickly. In Switch, the Heaths show how everyday people - employees and managers, parents and nurses - have united both minds and, as a result, achieved dramatic results: • The lowly medical interns who managed to defeat an entrenched, decades-old medical practice that was endangering patients • The home-organizing guru who developed a simple technique for overcoming the dread of housekeeping • The manager who transformed a lackadaisical customer-support team into service zealots by removing a standard tool of customer service In a compelling, story-driven narrative, the Heaths bring together decades of counterintuitive research in psychology, sociology, and other fields to shed new light on how we can effect transformative change. Switch shows that successful changes follow a pattern, a pattern you can use to make the changes that matter to you, whether your interest is in changing the world or changing your waistline. |
authority weight management dog food: Keto-Green 16 Anna Cabeca, DO, OBGYN, FACOG, 2024-01-02 An innovative 16-day plan that combines the fat-burning benefits of a ketogenic diet with the brain-clearing and keto-flu protection of alkaline food, by the USA Today bestselling author of The Hormone Fix. “A powerful program that paves the way for lasting health, longevity, and disease resistance.”—David Perlmutter, MD, New York Times bestselling author of Grain Brain Are you having a hard time losing weight? Do you suffer from brain fog, lack of focus, or poor memory? Do you run out of energy halfway through the day? Do you have unwanted cravings? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, join the club! In this revolutionary book, Dr. Anna Cabeca shares a proven way to finally give you the results you want, need, and deserve. There is no question that going keto works. This strict high-fat/low-carb diet denies the body glucose as a main source of energy and instead promotes the production and use of ketone bodies as fuel. It’s a great way to move you off a weight plateau, gain willpower, and get results fast. But going keto also often results in gastrointestinal discomfort, low energy, and moodiness—known as the “keto flu”—which makes the diet hard to sustain. The solution? Add alkaline foods—leafy greens, other vegetables, broths, healthy oils, nuts, and seeds—for a lifestyle that’s more sustainable and easier on your body. In other words: Go Keto-Green and thrive! A triple-board-certified physician, Dr. Anna Cabeca developed her method through years of careful patient and test-panel research. In Keto-Green 16, she explains the science behind her innovation: Hormone production dips as a woman ages, leading to increased visceral fat. By pairing keto-diet staples with foods that bring the body’s pH to a more alkaline level, you’ll shed belly fat while balancing the hormones responsible for that bulkier midsection. And by fueling your brain with ketones—like rocket fuel instead of gasoline—you’ll make better decisions, including healthier choices for what to eat. The unique nutritional balance of the Keto-Green 16 diet also boosts mood. With 16 days of what-to-eat instructions (including a version for vegetarians and vegans); more than 50 delicious breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack recipes; information about the 16 best alkaline foods; a 16-hour intermittent-fasting strategy; 16-minute HIIT exercise routines; and a chapter outlining the specifics of the nutritional plan just for men; Keto-Green 16 will ensure that you skip the flu and get on with rapid and amazing weight loss. |

authority weight management dog food: Big Kibble Shawn Buckley, Oscar Chavez, 2020-12-01 A big, inside look at the shocking lack of regulation within the pet food industry, and how readers can dramatically improve the quality of their dogs’ lives through diet. What's really going into commercial dog food? The answer is horrifying. Big Kibble is big business: $75 billion globally. A handful of multi-national corporations dominate the industry and together own as many as 80% of all brands. This comes as a surprise to most people, but what’s even more shocking is how lax the regulations and guidelines are around these products. The guidelines—or lack thereof—for pet food allow producers to include ever-cheaper ingredients, and create ever-larger earnings. For example, “legal” ingredients in kibble include poultry feces, saw dust, expired food, and diseased meat, among other horrors. Many vets still don’t know that kibble is not the best food for dogs because Big Kibble funds the nutrition research. So far, these corporations have been able to cut corners and still market and promote feed-grade food as if it were healthful and beneficial—until now. Just as you are what you eat, so is your dog. Once you stop feeding your dog the junk that’s in kibble or cans, you have taken the first steps to improving your dog’s health, behavior and happiness. You know the unsavory side of Big Tobacco and Big Pharma. Now Shawn Buckley, Dr. Oscar Chavez, and Wendy Paris explain all you need to know about unsavory Big Kibble—and offer a brighter path forward for you and your pet. |
