bessemer hall of history: Early Bessemer Jason Burnett, 2011 In 1887, iron and steel magnate Henry Fairchild DeBardeleben founded Bessemer and named it for English inventor Sir Henry Bessemer. DeBardeleben's dream was to make the city a steel center that would attract companies and people from all over the United States. Bessemer, like nearby Birmingham, is located within a few miles of all raw materials needed to make steel (coal, limestone, and iron ore). DeBardeleben bought 4,040 acres of land and marked off blocks for the town along Alabama Great Southern Railroad lines. With $2 million in starting capital, he built several blast furnaces for his coal and iron company. Within three years, Bessemer was Alabama's eighth largest city. The population grew so rapidly that Bessemer was nicknamed The Marvel City. The town quickly developed a thriving business district, beautiful neighborhoods, recreations ranging from parks to boating and dances at Westlake, and industries that spread iron, coal, and railcars across the nation. |

Bennett, 2011 When cotton was king and Jackson was president, Daniel Hillman built a bloomery forge on Roupes Creek near the Jefferson and Tuscaloosa County line. As the birthplace of the Birmingham Iron and Steel District, the forge grew into an important battery of three blast furnaces capable of producing 22 tons of iron daily for Confederate munitions. The Tannehill Furnaces--the handiwork of Moses Stroup, one of the South's leading ironmasters--are among the best preserved 19th-century ironworks in America. Known for her trademark white carnation corsage, Brown was the matriarch of Omaha’s Near North Side—a historically black part of town—and an iconic city leader. Her remarkable life, a product of the Reconstruction era and Jim Crow, reflects a larger American history that includes the Great Migration, the Red Scare of the post–World War era, civil rights and black power movements, desegregation, and urban renewal. Within the context of African American and women’s history studies, Amy Helene Forss’s Black Print with a White Carnation examines the impact of the black press through the narrative of Brown’s life and work. Forss draws on more than 150 oral histories, numerous black newspapers, and government documents to illuminate African American history during the political and social upheaval of the twentieth century. During Brown’s fifty-one-year tenure, the Omaha Star became a channel of communication between black and white residents of the city, as well as an arena for positive weekly news in the black community.
