agile physical therapy san mateo: Surveillance Valley Yasha Levine, 2018-02-06 The internet is the most effective weapon the government has ever built. In this fascinating book, investigative reporter Yasha Levine uncovers the secret origins of the internet, tracing it back to a Pentagon counterinsurgency surveillance project. A visionary intelligence officer, William Godel, realized that the key to winning the war in Vietnam was not outgunning the enemy, but using new information technology to understand their motives and anticipate their movements. This idea -- using computers to spy on people and groups perceived as a threat, both at home and abroad -- drove ARPA to develop the internet in the 1960s, and continues to be at the heart of the modern internet we all know and use today. As Levine shows, surveillance wasn't something that suddenly appeared on the internet; it was woven into the fabric of the technology. But this isn't just a story about the NSA or other domestic programs run by the government. As the book spins forward in time, Levine examines the private surveillance business that powers tech-industry giants like Google, Facebook, and Amazon, revealing how these companies spy on their users for profit, all while doing double duty as military and intelligence contractors. Levine shows that the military and Silicon Valley are effectively inseparable: a military-digital complex that permeates everything connected to the internet, even coopting and weaponizing the antigovernment privacy movement that sprang up in the wake of Edward Snowden. With deep research, skilled storytelling, and provocative arguments, Surveillance Valley will change the way you think about the news -- and the device on which you read it. |

agile physical therapy san mateo: Channel Kindness: Stories of Kindness and Community Born This Way Foundation Reporters, Lady Gaga, 2020-09-22 A New York Times Bestseller For Lady Gaga, kindness is the driving force behind everything she says and does. The quiet power of kindness can change the way we view one another, our communities, and even ourselves. She embodies this mission, and through her work, brings more kindness into our world every single day. Lady Gaga has always believed in the importance of being yourself, being kind to yourself, and being kind to others, no matter who they are or where they come from. With that sentiment in mind, she and her mother, Cynthia Germanotta, founded Born This Way Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to making the world a kinder and braver place. Through the years, they've collected stories of kindness, bravery and resilience from young people all over the world, proving that kindness truly is the universal language. And now, we invite you to read these stories and follow along as each and every young author finds their voice just as Lady Gaga has found hers. Within these pages, you’ll meet young changemakers who found their inner strength, who prevailed in the face of bullies, who started their own social movements, who decided to break through the mental health stigma and share how they felt, who created safe spaces for LGBTQ+ youth, and who have embraced kindness with every fiber of their being by helping others without the expectation of anything in return. In one story, you’ll read about a young person with an autoimmune disease, who after being bullied at school, learned how to practice self-love and started an organization with the mission of educating others about the importance of self-love, too; and in another story, you’ll meet a young person who decided to start a movement to help eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health and encouraged others to talk about their feelings openly and honestly, a reminder that kindness and mental wellness go hand in hand. Not only were we moved by these individual acts of kindness, but we were also touched by the many stories of organizations, neighborhoods, and entire communities that fully dedicated themselves to helping those in need and found new, innovative ways to make our world a kinder and braver place. Individually and collectively, these stories prove that kindness not only saves lives but builds community. Kindness is inclusion, it is pride, it is empathy, it is compassion, it is self-respect and it is the guiding light to love. Kindness is always transformational, and its never-ending ripples result in even more kind acts that can change our lives, our communities, and our world. |

agile physical therapy san mateo: Movement for Self-Healing Mier Schnieder, 2011-02-19 Born blind and declared incurably blind after a series of childhood operations left him with only a slight ability to discern light and shadow, Meir Schneider remained convinced that his handicap was not permanent. As a teenager, he began work with two teachers who gave him exercises and techniques to reverse his blindness. Within four years he had gained a remarkable degree of vision and begun to develop a system of therapeutic exercise combining movement, breathing, and mental imagery. He also began working with people whose physical problems ranged from chronic headaches to polio and muscular dystrophy, inspiring them with his example, enthusiasm, and faith — miraculous recoveries ensued. Sections in the book give specific guidelines for healing back problems, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, breathing difficulties, eye problems, and muscular dystrophy. Movement for Self-Healing parallels the stories of Schneider and the people he has worked with, detailing his holistic methods of stimulating the natural healing powers of the body, offering a practical guide to specific exercises, and articulating a profound message of inspiration and hope. |
agile physical therapy san mateo: Rewilding European Landscapes Henrique M. Pereira, Laetitia M. Navarro, 2015-05-04 Some European lands have been progressively alleviated of human pressures, particularly traditional agriculture in remote areas. This book proposes that this land abandonment can be seen as an opportunity to restore natural ecosystems via rewilding. We define rewilding as the passive management of ecological successions having in mind the long-term goal of restoring natural ecosystem processes. The book aims at introducing the concept of rewilding to scientists, students and practitioners. The first part presents the theory of rewilding in the European context. The second part of the book directly addresses the link between rewilding, biodiversity, and habitats. The third and last part is dedicated to practical aspects of the implementation of rewilding as a land management option. We believe that this book will both set the basis for future research on rewilding and help practitioners think about how rewilding can take place in areas under their management. |

agile physical therapy san mateo: Virtual Worlds Jean-Claude Heudin, 2003-06-26 Virtual Worlds 2000 is the second in a series of international scientific conferences on virtual worlds held at the International Institute of Multimedia in Paris La Défense (Pôle Universitaire Léonard de Vinci). The term virtual worlds generally refers to virtual reality applications or experi ences. We extend the use of these terms to describe experiments that deal with the idea of synthesizing digital worlds on computers. Thus, virtual worlds could be de fined as the study of computer programs that implement digital worlds. Constructing such complex artificial worlds seems to be extremely difficult to do in any sort of complete and realistic manner. Such a new discipline must benefit from a large amount of work in various fields: virtual reality and advanced computer graphics, artificial life and evolutionary computation, simulation of physical systems, and more. Whereas virtual reality has largely concerned itself with the design of 3D immersive graphical spaces, and artificial life with the simulation of living organisms, the field of virtual worlds, is concerned with the synthesis of digital universes considered as wholes, with their own physical and biological laws. |

agile physical therapy san mateo: The Future of Technology Tom Standage, 2005-08-01 From the industrial revolution to the railway age, through the era of electrification, the advent of mass production, and finally to the information age, the same pattern keeps repeating itself. An exciting, vibrant phase of innovation and financial speculation is followed by a crash, after which begins a longer, more stately period during which the technology is actually deployed properly. This collection of surveys and articles from The Economist examines how far technology has come and where it is heading. Part one looks at topics such as the “greying” (maturing) of IT, the growing importance of security, the rise of outsourcing, and the challenge of complexity, all of which have more to do with implementation than innovation. Part two looks at the shift from corporate computing towards consumer technology, whereby new technologies now appear first in consumer gadgets such as mobile phones. Topics covered will include the emergence of the mobile phone as the “digital Swiss Army knife”; the rise of digital cameras, which now outsell film-based ones; the growing size and importance of the games industry and its ever-closer links with other more traditional parts of the entertainment industry; and the social impact of technologies such as text messaging, Wi-Fi, and camera phones. Part three considers which technology will lead the next great phase of technological disruption and focuses on biotechnology, energy technology, and nanotechnology. |

agile physical therapy san mateo: Thyroid Ultrasound Alexander N. Sencha, Yury N. Patrunov, 2019-07-30 This book is a wide-ranging and up-to-date guide to the use of ultrasound for imaging of the thyroid that will meet the needs of novices while providing more experienced professionals with advanced information. All of the techniques employed in modern thyroid ultrasound are covered, from conventional grayscale and Doppler imaging to elastography and contrast-enhanced ultrasound, with a focus on practical aspects and with detailed analysis of their diagnostic value and limitations. The characteristic ultrasound findings of the normal thyroid and a wide range of thyroid diseases and disorders are described with the aid of hundreds of high-quality images. Diffuse changes and thyroid lesions are discussed in depth, paying close attention to aspects of importance for early detection and differential diagnosis. In this context the authors summarize their personal experiences in the use of qualitative parameters of compression elastography and quantitative data of shear-wave elastography. In addition, a practical approach to the risk stratification of thyroid nodules is proposed. The book concludes with a resumé of the main challenges and pitfalls in thyroid ultrasound. |
agile physical therapy san mateo: Advanced Imaging Modalities Steffen Rickes, P. Malfertheiner, 2004-01-01 Imaging technologies are the cornerstone in the diagnosis and staging of benign and malignant lesions in the liver and pancreas. Although the methods are partly competing, they often need to be used in a complementary way in order to obtain optimal results for decision making. The introduction of new and refined non-invasive imaging technologies has lately led to a major progress in the diagnostic approach to diseases of the digestive system. For example, this is the case with echo-enhanced sonography: This technique is based on the property of microbubbles to resonate and emit harmonic waves in an ultrasound field. The initial method, defined as 'second harmonic imaging', was limited by the incapacity to separate the signals obtained from the bubbles and the tissue texture. This procedure has been replaced by the pulse inversion imaging technique which now gives a much better picture quality, allowing to depict the vascularization pattern of distinct lesions in the liver and pancreas. Similarly, the performance of other key imaging modalities such as CT-scan, magnetic resonance imaging, Doppler sonography and endosonography has been improved. Clinicians seeking current information on modern imaging modalities for diagnosis, differentiation and staging of gastrointestinal diseases will find this publication very useful. |

agile physical therapy san mateo: Self-healing Meir Schneider, 1988-11 Born blind and declared incurable after a series of childhood operations, Meir Schneider remained convinced that his disability was not permanent. As a teenager he began to work with teachers who gave him exercises to reverse his blindness. Within four years he gained a remarkable degree of vision, and began developing a system of therapeutic exercise combining movement, breathing, and mental imagery. When he began working with others, miraculous recoveries ensued. Movement for Self-Healing details Schneider's methods of stimulating the natural healing powers of the body, with specific guidelines for improving vision, back problems, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, breathing, and muscular dystrophy. |
