european society of hypertension 2023: Versed Rae Armantrout, 2010-08 A collection of poetry organized in two sections. The first section, Versed, play with vice and versa, the perversity of human consciousness. They flirt with error and delusion, skating on a thin ice that inevitably cracks. The second section, Dark Matter, alludes to more than the unseen substance thought to make up the majority of mass in the universe. The invisible and unknowable are confronted directly as the author's experience with cancer marks these poems with a new austerity, shot through with her signature wit and stark unsentimental thinking.--Résumé de l'éditeur. |

european society of hypertension 2023: Hypertension and Heart Failure Maria Dorobantu, Giuseppe Mancia, Guido Grassi, Victor Voicu, 2019-03-30 This book explains how hypertension affects 20-50% of the adult population in developed countries. Heart failure is the result of the hypertension's effects on the heart and it represents a growing public health problem. In this context the international scientific community is continuously struggling to develop better strategies in screening, diagnosing and treating hypertension and its deleterious effects. Thus, this field is continuously changing, with new important information being added constantly. This volume will offer both insights into the intimate mechanisms of transition from hypertension to heart failure and clinical practice advice on the prevention and treatment of heart failure in hypertensive population. The mechanisms which explain the progression from hypertension to heart failure will be also covered exhaustively by offering two chapters referring to the diagnosis of heart failure in hypertensive population and one regarding echocardiography which is the most frequently used imaging method in clinical practice. The reader will be also provided with information on cardiovascular magnetic resonance which has the unique advantage of differentiating hypertensive heart failure from other pathologies associated with increased myocardial thickness. This book is a useful tool for clinicians but also to the research community interested in heart failure and consequences of hypertension on heart who want to be up-to-date with the new developments in the field. |

european society of hypertension 2023: Controversies in Cardiology John A. Ambrose, Alfredo E. Rodríguez, 2015-09-10 This book will consider several clinical and interventional topics for which there is uncertainty, continued debate and/or no consensus based on current guidelines. While there are numerous guidelines in cardiology, new and on-going trials that address new drugs treatments and procedures raise many unanswered questions. Furthermore, most practicing cardiologist taking care of the patients are likely unable to digest all of these studies or guidelines and necessarily correctly apply them to their patients. If one considers in the guidelines the frequent use of Level C (consensus), there are many areas or situations where no trial exists. Also, when applying the results of a trial to an individual patient, there can be uncertainty of how this patient should be managed based on the present body of evidence. |

Cardiovascular risk factors lead to the development of cardiovascular disorders from early life. An interdisciplinary approach to the estimation of risk and prevention of vascular events should be adopted at each level of health care. In the past few years, there have been some major advances in this field, with the development of various new markers of heightened cardiovascular risk in particular. With this book, we present some of the emerging concepts and risk elimination factors regarding cardiovascular diseases. It covers some significant issues relating to the impact of stress on specific gender groups, obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome, exposure to lead, and dietary assessment in cardiovascular risks. |

european society of hypertension 2023: Prevention of Coronary Heart Disease: Diet, Lifestyle and Risk Factors in the Seven Countries Study Daan Kromhout, Alessandro Menotti, Henry Blackburn, 2002-09-30 In the 1940s I was struck by reports about many apparently healthy middle-aged men who dropped dead instantly from heart attacks. The causes of these sudden deaths were unknown. I was interested to discover physio-chemical characteristics of individuals with predictive value for the occurrence of these fatal heart attacks. The discovery ofpreventive variables would point ways to prevent this disease. In order to find relationships between mode of life and susceptibility to heart disease contrasting populations had to be studied. Variety - not a high degree of homogeneity in culture and habits - must be sought. After exploratory surveys in countries with supposed differences in dietary patterns, lifestyle and heart disease rates in the early 1950s, the Seven Countries Study took off in 1958. This study established relationships between risk factors and development of heart disease in middle-aged men in health examined in countries with cultures we demonstrated to contrast in diet and lifestyle. The results obtained in the Seven Countries Study from its inception till now are presented in this book entitled: Prevention ofcoronary heart disease. Diet, lifestyle and risk factors in the Seven Countries Study. Long ago I realized that our concern should not be restricted to the prevention of coronary heart disease but should be extended to all diseases and premature death. |

european society of hypertension 2023: Autonomic Disorders in Clinical Practice Giuseppe Micieli, Max Hilz, Pietro Cortelli, 2023-12-06 This book is focused on a clinical-based diagnostic approach of autonomic dysfunctions, highlighting main diagnostic tools and pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies available nowadays. The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is a subcomponent of the peripheral nervous system (PNS) and dysfunction of one or more subdivisions of the ANS, when accompanying other diseases, is linked to a worse prognosis of the latter. In some circumstances or when severe, dysfunction of ANS itself results in symptoms and disability. A myriad of factors can cause autonomic dysfunction and more than one can concur even in the same patient; due to the expansive nature of the ANS, patients can be affected by a wide range of conditions. Each chapter is characterized by a similar structure and is devoted to a different dysfunction. For each pathology, the book offers the essential information on mechanisms of action, treatments and outcomes. Written by experts in the research of these disorders, the volume addresses primarily Neurologists, but will be a useful tool also for Gastroenterologists, Ophthalmologists, Urologists, Cardiologists and Internal medicine specialists. |
