delta math problem solver: A Concise and Practical Introduction to Programming Algorithms in Java Frank Nielsen, 2009-04-05 A Concise and Practical Introduction to Programming Algorithms in Java has two main goals. The first is for novice programmers to learn progressively the basic concepts underlying most imperative programming languages using Java. The second goal is to introduce new programmers to the very basic principles of thinking the algorithmic way and turning the algorithms into programs using the programming concepts of Java. The book is divided into two parts and includes: The fundamental notions of variables, expressions and assignments with type checking - Conditional and loop statements - Explanation of the concepts of functions with pass-by-value arguments and recursion - Fundamental sequential and bisection search techniques - Basic iterative and recursive sorting algorithms. Each chapter of the book concludes with a set of exercises to enable students to practice concepts covered.

delta math problem solver: Chasing Revenue Gregory Cross, 2021-08-04 Revenue management is like any other management practice. It involves making pricing and inventory decisions based on assembled data coming from a variety of sources. The name revenue management was coined by Robert G. Cross, the founder of Aeronomics, Talus, and Revenue Analytics (no relation to the author). Ravi Mehrotra, a young computer engineer who wanted to start his own company, was another believer in revenue management. He’d go on to create the largest revenue management software company in the world. Both Robert Cross and Ravi Mehrotra built revenue management systems. It would be left to Gregory Cross and a few others to take the concepts of revenue management, which were originally focused on the airline industry and use them to revolutionize the hotel industry. Along the way he would discover it was more than just technology and algorithms. What they were building in the 1990’s was a new way of looking at the business. In this book, Cross documents the difficulty to reimagine hotel pricing and decision making in the last decade of the twentieth century. It was a time when the Internet was young and unruly and no one had ever heard of “big data.” The book also serves as a crash course of what it takes to succeed in the hospitality industry and how to get your ideas heard as you rise up the ranks.

delta math problem solver: Decision Procedures Daniel Kroening, Ofer Strichman, 2008-05-23 A decision procedure is an algorithm that, given a decision problem, terminates with a correct yes/no answer. Here, the authors focus on theories that are expressive enough to model real problems, but are still decidable. Specifically, the book concentrates on decision procedures for first-order theories that are commonly used in automated verification and reasoning, theorem-proving, compiler optimization and operations research. The techniques described in the book draw from fields such as graph theory and logic, and are routinely used in industry. The authors introduce the basic terminology of satisfiability modulo theories and then, in separate chapters, study decision procedures for each of the following theories: propositional logic; equalities and uninterpreted functions; linear arithmetic; bit vectors; arrays; pointer logic; and quantified formulas.

delta math problem solver: Scaling of Differential Equations Hans Petter Langtangen, Geir K. Pedersen, 2016-06-15 The book serves both as a reference for various scaled models with corresponding dimensionless numbers, and as a resource for learning the art of scaling. A special feature of the book is the emphasis on how to create software for scaled models, based on existing software for unscaled models. Scaling (or non-dimensionalization) is a mathematical technique that greatly simplifies the setting of input parameters in numerical simulations. Moreover, scaling enhances the understanding of how different physical processes interact in a differential equation model. Compared to the existing literature, where the topic of scaling is frequently encountered, but very often in only a brief and shallow setting, the present book gives much more thorough explanations of how to reason about finding the right scales. This process is highly problem dependent, and therefore the book features a lot of worked examples, from very simple ODEs to systems of PDEs, especially from fluid mechanics. The text is easily accessible and example-driven. The first part on ODEs fits even a lower undergraduate level, while the most advanced multiphysics fluid mechanics examples target the graduate level. The scientific literature is full of scaled models, but in most of the cases, the scales are just stated without thorough mathematical reasoning. This book explains how the scales are found mathematically. This book will be a valuable read for anyone doing numerical simulations based on ordinary or partial differential equations.

Pollak Chairman of the International Program Committee Bell Laboratories Murray Hill, New Jersey, USA The Fourth International Congress on Mathematics Education was held in Berkeley, California, USA, August 10-16, 1980. Previous Congresses were held in Lyons in 1969, Exeter in 1972, and Karlsruhe in 1976. Attendance at Berkeley was about 1800 full and 500 associate members from about 90 countries; at least half of these come from outside of North America. About 450 persons participated in the program either as speakers or as presiders; approximately 40 percent of these came from the U.S. or Canada. There were four plenary addresses; they were delivered by Hans Freudenthal on major problems of mathematics education, Hermina Sinclair on the relationship between the learning of language and of mathematics, Seymour Papert on the computer as carrier of mathematical culture, and Hua Loo-Keng on popularising and applying mathematical methods. Gearge Polya was the honorary president of the Congress; illness prevented his planned attendence but he sent a brief presentation entitled, Mathematics Improves the Mind. There was a full program of speakers, panelists, debates, miniconferences, and meetings of working and study groups. In addition, 18 major projects from around the world were invited to make presentations, and various groups representing special areas of concern had the opportunity to meet and to plan their future activities.

delta math problem solver: Mathematical Problem Solving ALAN H. SCHOENFELD, 2014-06-28 This book is addressed to people with research interests in the nature of mathematical thinking at any level, topeople with an interest in higher-order thinking skills in any domain, and to all mathematics teachers. The focal point of the book is a framework for the analysis of complex problem-solving behavior. That framework is presented in Part One, which consists of Chapters 1 through 5. It describes four qualitatively different aspects of complex intellectual activity: cognitive resources, the body of facts and procedures at one's disposal; heuristics, rules of thumb for making progress in difficult situations; control, having to do with the efficiency with which individuals utilize the knowledge at their disposal; and belief systems, one's perspectives regarding the nature of a discipline and how one goes about working in it. Part Two of the book, consisting of Chapters 6 through 10, presents a series of empirical studies that flesh out the analytical framework. These studies document the ways that competent problem solvers make the most of the knowledge at their disposal. They include observations of students, indicating some typical roadblocks to success. Data taken from students before and after a series of intensive problem-solving courses document the kinds of learning that can result from carefully designed instruction. Finally, observations made in typical high school classrooms serve to indicate some of the sources of students' (often counterproductive) mathematical behavior.

delta math problem solver: Mathematical Quickies Charles W. Trigg, 1985 For the mathematics enthusiast of any age or level of sophisitcation, this stimulating treasury of unusual math problems offers unlimited opportunity for mind-biggling recreation. Carles W. Trigg, Dean Emeritus and Professor Emeritus at Los Angeles City College and one of the country's best-known problemists, has compiled nearly 300 mathematical brainteasers from the field of of arithmetic, algebra, plane and solid geometry, trigonometry, number theory, and such general recreational mathematics and dissections, cryptarithms and magic squares. The object of each problem is to find the quickest, most elegant solution - they are often unorthodox and there is usually and element of surprise in each. Ranging from the simple to complex, problems are both original with the author and the work of over 100 other qualified mathematicians. Most are rarely seen or entirely new; all challenge the reader to devise solutions more elegant than the ones provided.

delta math problem solver: Numerical Approximation of Hyperbolic Systems of Conservation Laws Edwige Godlewski, Pierre-Arnaud Raviart, 2013-11-21 This work is devoted to the theory and approximation of nonlinear hyper bolic systems of conservation laws in one or two space variables. It follows directly a previous publication on hyperbolic systems of conservation laws by the same authors, and we shall make frequent references to Godlewski and Raviart (1991) (hereafter noted G. R. ), though the present volume can be read independently. This earlier publication, apart from a first chap ter, especially covered the scalar case. Thus, we shall detail here neither the mathematical theory of multidimensional scalar conservation laws nor their approximation in the one-dimensional case by finite-difference con servative schemes, both of which were treated in G. R. , but we shall mostly consider systems. The theory for systems is in fact much more difficult and not at all completed. This explains why we shall mainly concentrate on some theoretical aspects that are needed in the applications, such as the solution of the Riemann problem, with occasional insights into more sophisticated problems. The present book is divided into six chapters, including an introductory chapter. For the reader's convenience, we shall resume in this Introduction the notions that are necessary for a self-sufficient understanding of this book -the main definitions of hyperbolicity, weak solutions, and entropy present the practical examples that will be thoroughly developed in the following chapters, and recall the main results concerning the scalar case.
