The objective was to create a global forum where researchers in business informatics, seniors as well as juniors, could meet, collaborate and - change ideas. Over the years BIR has matured into a series of international conferences, typically organized in the Baltic Sea region, including Norway and Iceland. A steering committee ensures the high quality of the BIR proceedings. We are very proud that this year an international and very well known editor has agreed to publish selected papers of the conference. The interest in the conference in terms of submissions and participation has steadily increased over the years. This year, we received 53 contributions among which 14 submissions were accepted as long papers and 4 as short papers. A few additional contributions were invited for presentation at the conference. The selection was carefully carried out by an International Program C- mittee. The result is a set of interesting and stimulating papers that address important issues such as knowledge management, ontologies, models, work?ow speci?cations, data bases and OLAP. Parreiras, 2012-05-09 The next enterprise computing era will rely on the synergy between both technologies: semantic web and model-driven software development (MDSD). The semantic web organizes system knowledge in conceptual domains according to its meaning. It addresses various enterprise computing needs by identifying, abstracting and rationalizing commonalities, and checking for inconsistencies across system specifications. On the other side, model-driven software development is closing the gap among business requirements, designs and executables by using domain-specific languages with custom-built syntax and semantics. It focuses on using modeling languages as programming languages. Among many areas of application, we highlight the area of configuration management. Consider the example of a telecommunication company, where managing the multiple configurations of network devices (routers, hubs, modems, etc.) is crucial. Enterprise systems identify and document the functional and physical characteristics of network devices, and control changes to those characteristics. Applying the integration of semantic web and model-driven software development allows for (1) explicitly specifying configurations of network devices with tailor-made languages, (2) for checking the consistency of these specifications (3) for defining a vocabulary to share device specifications across enterprise systems. By managing configurations with consistent and explicit concepts, we reduce cost and risk, and enhance agility in response to new requirements in the telecommunication area. This book examines the synergy between semantic web and model-driven software development. It brings together advances from disciplines like ontologies, description logics, domain-specific modeling, model transformation and ontology engineering to take enterprise computing to the next level. |

In the public mind ever since a robot has been a me chanical humanoid, tireless and somewhat sinister. In the research community the field of robotics has recently reached large size and respectability, but without answering the question, What is robotics? or perhaps, What is a robot? There is no real consensus for a precise definition of robotics. I suppose that Capekian mechanical men, if one could build them, are robots, but after that there is little agreement. Rather than try to enumerate all of the things that are and are not robots, I will try to characterize the kinds of features that make a system a robot. A candidate definition of a robot is a system intended to achieve mechanical action, with sensory feedback from the world to guide the actions and a sophisticated con trol system connecting the sensing and the actions. |

Asprino, 2020-09-25 Social robots are embodied agents that perform knowledge-intensive tasks involving several kinds of information from different heterogeneous sources. This book, Engineering Background Knowledge for Social Robots, introduces a component-based architecture for supporting the knowledge-intensive tasks performed by social robots. The design was based on the requirements of a real socially-assistive robotic application, and all the components contribute to and benefit from the knowledge base which is its cornerstone. The knowledge base is structured by a set of interconnected and modularized ontologies which model the information, and is initially populated with linguistic, ontological and factual knowledge retrieved from Linked Open Data. Access to the knowledge base is guaranteed by Lizard, a tool providing software components, with an API for accessing facts stored in the knowledge base in a programmatic and object-oriented way. The author introduces two methods for engineering the knowledge needed by robots, a novel method for automatically integrating knowledge from heterogeneous sources with a frame-driven approach, and a novel empirical method for assessing foundational distinctions over Linked Open Data entities from a common-sense perspective. These effectively enable the evolution of the robot’s knowledge by automatically integrating information derived from heterogeneous sources and the generation of common-sense knowledge using Linked Open Data as an empirical basis. The feasibility and benefits of the architecture have been assessed through a prototype deployed in a real socially-assistive scenario, and the book presents two applications and the results of a qualitative and quantitative evaluation. |
