exercises to boost metabolism: The Complete Idiot's Guide to Boosting Your Metabolism Joseph Lee Klapper, 2008 How often have you heard someone say, after pushing back from the table following a hearty meal and ruefully patting his or her belly, 'It isn't me-it's my metabolism'? It's easier to blame our girth on the slow rate of the chemical reactions that convert the food we eat into the energy we need to live than it is to take responsibility for the amount and kind of food we put into our mouths, and although disorders like hyperthyroidism and diabetes do damage the good work of our metabolism, there's plenty we can do to assist those chemicals in doing their job. Eating right, exercising, and reducing stress all work together to boost the metabolism and control our weight. In The Complete Idiot's Guide to Boosting Your Metabolism, Dr. Joseph Lee Klapper, a noted cardiologist and author of The Complete Idiot's Guide to Lowering Your Cholesterol(9781592575527), takes readers from what the metabolism is and how it works through the many ways to raise it-from what we eat and drink, both independently and in combination; vitamins, minerals, supplements, and herbs that can be true body boosters; to other metabolic aids such as meditation and holistic healing; and medications and surgical procedures that can be considered as a last resort. Dr. Klapper's exercise plan-including aerobic and isotonic exercises and resistance training for the upper, middle, and lower body-helps readers reduce fat and increase muscle, and his recipes show readers how delicious it can be to be a booster! |

exercises to boost metabolism: The New Rules of Lifting for Women Lou Schuler, Cassandra Forsythe, PhD, RD, Alwyn Cosgrove, 2008-12-26 In The New Rules of Lifting for Women, authors Lou Schuler, Cassandra Forsythe and Alwyn Cosgrove present a comprehensive strength, conditioning and nutrition plan destined to revolutionize the way women work out. All the latest studies prove that strength training, not aerobics, provides the key to losing fat and building a fit, strong body. This book refutes the misconception that women will bulk up if they lift heavy weights. Nonsense! It's tough enough for men to pack on muscle, and they have much more of the hormone necessary to build muscle: natural testosterone. Muscles need to be strengthened to achieve a lean, healthy look. Properly conditioned muscles increase metabolism and promote weight loss -- it's that simple. The program demands that women put down the Barbie weights, step away from the treadmill and begin a strength and conditioning regime for the natural athlete in every woman. The New Rules of Lifting for Women will change the way women see fitness, nutrition and their own bodies. |
exercises to boost metabolism: Burn Herman Pontzer PhD, 2022-04-19 One of the foremost researchers in human metabolism reveals surprising new science behind food and exercise. We burn 2,000 calories a day. And if we exercise and cut carbs, we'll lose more weight. Right? Wrong. In this paradigm-shifting book, Herman Pontzer reveals for the first time how human metabolism really works so that we can finally manage our weight and improve our health. Pontzer's groundbreaking studies with hunter-gatherer tribes show how exercise doesn't increase our metabolism. Instead, we burn calories within a very narrow range: nearly 3,000 calories per day, no matter our activity level. This was a brilliant evolutionary strategy to survive in times of famine. Now it seems to doom us to obesity. The good news is we can lose weight, but we need to cut calories. Refuting such weight-loss hype as paleo, keto, anti-gluten, anti-grain, and even vegan, Pontzer discusses how all diets succeed or fail: For shedding pounds, a calorie is a calorie. At the same time, we must exercise to keep our body systems and signals functioning optimally, even if it won't make us thinner. Hunter-gatherers like the Hadza move about five hours a day and remain remarkably healthy into old age. But elite athletes can push the body too far, burning calories faster than their bodies can take them in. It may be that the most spectacular athletic feats are the result not just of great training, but of an astonishingly efficient digestive system. Revealing, irreverent, and always entertaining, Pontzer has written a book that will change how you eat, move, and live. |

Now, new research shows that as little as 15 minutes of resistance training is just as effective in spiking a man's metabolism—his fat-burning furnace—as a workout lasting more than twice as long. All it takes is 15 minutes to achieve lifelong results—and men are more likely to stick to an exercise plan if it's chopped down to those 15 minutes. The Men's Health Big Book of 15-Minute Workouts contains fast-paced circuit training and interval workouts that boost calorie burn, build muscle, and fry belly fat in half the time of regular workouts. exercises to boost metabolism: Skeletal Muscle Circulation Ronald J. Korthuis, 2011 The aim of this treatise is to summarize the current understanding of the mechanisms for blood flow control to skeletal muscle under resting conditions, how perfusion is elevated (exercise hyperemia) to meet the increased demand for oxygen and other substrates during exercise, mechanisms underlying the beneficial effects of regular physical activity on cardiovascular health, the regulation of transcapillary fluid filtration and protein flux across the microvascular exchange vessels, and the role of changes in the skeletal muscle circulation in pathologic states. Skeletal muscle is unique among organs in that its blood flow can change over a remarkably large range. Compared to blood flow at rest, muscle blood flow can increase by more than 20-fold on average during intense exercise, while perfusion of certain individual white muscles or portions of those muscles can increase by as much as 80-fold. This is compared to maximal increases of 4- to 6-fold in the coronary circulation during exercise. These increases in muscle perfusion are required to meet the enormous demands for oxygen and nutrients by the active muscles. Because of its large mass and the fact that skeletal muscles receive 25% of the cardiac output at rest, sympathetically mediated vasoconstriction in vessels supplying this tissue allows central hemodynamic variables (e.g., blood pressure) to be spared during stresses such as hypovolemic shock. Sympathetic vasoconstriction in skeletal muscle in such pathologic conditions also effectively shunts blood flow away from muscles to tissues that are more sensitive to reductions in their blood supply that might otherwise occur. Again, because of its large mass and percentage of cardiac output directed to skeletal muscle, alterations in blood vessel structure and function with chronic disease (e.g., hypertension) contribute significantly to the pathology of such disorders. Alterations in skeletal muscle vascular resistance and/or in the exchange properties of this vascular bed also modify transcapillary fluid filtration and solute movement across the microvascular barrier to influence muscle function and contribute to disease pathology. Finally, it is clear that exercise training induces an adaptive transformation to a protected phenotype in the vasculature supplying skeletal muscle and other tissues to promote overall cardiovascular health.
