expansion path in economics: Production Economics Chauncey T. K. Ching, John Fumio Yanagida, 1985-01-01 By combining information from microeconomics, mathematics, production functions, and temporal and spatial related production analyses, this book provides a variety of essential information to agricultural economics, economics, and business students. Empirical application of production theory and technique is presented at great length; actual data collected from various agricultural enterprises and experiments are used for production function analyses; and methodological and statistical problems commonly encountered in empirical research are carefully addressed. This book fulfills two great needs in the agricultural economics profession: a textbook suitable for senior-level and graduate students that develops and illustrates how calculus and linear algebra can be used in understanding production economics; and for a scholarly work that illustrates empirical applications and results of production function analyses and production theory.
expansion path in economics: Production Economics Svend Rasmussen, 2012-08-04 This book covers the basic theory of how, what and when firms should produce to maximise profits. Based on the neoclassical theory of the firm presented in most general microeconomic textbooks, it extends the general treatment and focuses on the application of the theory to specific problems that the firm faces when making production decisions to maximise profits. Increasing level of government regulation and the use of specialised and often very expensive equipment in modern production motivates the following focus areas: 1) How to optimise production under restrictions., 2) Treatment of fixed inputs and the process of input fixation, 3) Optimisation of production over time, 4) Linear and Mixed Integer Programming as tools for optimisation in practice. This updated second edition includes a more comprehensive introduction to the theory of decision making under risk and uncertainty as well as a new chapter on how to use linear programming to generate the supply function of the firm.

expansion path in economics: International Economics Henry Thompson, 2006 This text integrates the microeconomics of trade with concepts from open economy macroeconomics. The emphasis is on the powerful forces of international competition and the limitations of government policy. Economics began with a political debate over tariffs and the politics continue. Domestic industries lobby for protection against foreign competitors and for export subsidies. Government policy makers favor their pet industries in return for lobby money and votes. Meanwhile, other industries lobby for free trade. Governments worldwide tentatively negotiate free trade agreements while international financial markets determine the effectiveness of their fiscal and monetary policies. Wages, capital returns, and national income rise and fall with international commerce. The text covers these issues of international trade and finance. The trade theory is based on partial equilibrium market analysis, constant cost and neoclassical general equilibrium, the factor proportions model, and various theories of industrial organization.--Book cover.

This book covers the syllabus of almost all the universities and institutions running with the courses. Although this book is for under graduation but it also covers up the syllabus of the post graduation classes and even for the beginners of the subject, who have knowledge on the priority basis in this field would found this book easy to understand, the graph and mathematical analysis has been used but in a manner that even without mathematics background students will found it out more easy to grasp the points. The explanations and examples of the books are specifically written with the concepts of economics in the background and are not general cases on management. This will further enhance the value of the book in future. I have a great pleasure in presenting this book to the faculties and students of this subject. Although there are many books available in the market on this subject, but my experience of about ten years shows that the students somehow miss-out on basis concept of topic and, therefore, tend to consider this subject as very tough and difficult. Hence, in writing this book special emphasis has been laid on simplicity of language and presentation without losing the academic rigor of the contents. Even difficult topics have been presented in such a manner that the student understands it easily. Unnecessary details have been avoided.

expansion path in economics: Mineral Economics O. Rudawsky, 2013-10-22 Although profitable development and exploitation of natural resources has been, and still remains, the goal of many individuals and firms within the extractive industries, several new goals must also be considered, the foremost of which is the wise management of the already discovered stocks of renewable and nonrenewable natural resources. This aspect has become of vital importance for society as a whole. It is this dual objective - the economic feasibility on behalf of private interests, and the efficient development and utilization of natural resources as viewed from the societal point of view - that is covered in this book. The material presented is based on many published and unpublished sources, and serves to demonstrate the basic principles associated with the economics and management of mineral resources. Rather than attempting to carry on an in-depth analysis of the various topics, the author has provided a broad coverage of the basic concepts and their applications in real-life occurrences. For those interested in more intensive analysis, suggested additional selected readings and references are provided. The book is written as an introductory-level textbook in mineral economics. Advanced students in mineral engineering programs, economics, and business administration curricula, with a particular interest in economic analysis of mineral and energy activities may find this book an appropriate starting-point. Likewise, first-year graduate students in engineering programs, resource economics, mineral economics, natural resource management, environmental sciences, and law will find that the book provides a fundamental understanding of the basic concepts of mineral economics and how they relate to the general economic and management theories.

expansion path in economics: The Macrodynamics of Advanced Market Economics Alfred S. Eicher, 2019-07-12 This volume examines the macrodynamic behaviour of advanced economies with social institutions similar to those of the United States and other members of the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development. It is a critique of, and provides alternative models to, conventional neoclassical theory. The principles developed are used to explain two major phenomena in economic life: the nation's secular growth rate and the cyclical deviations around that growth. These interdependent movements of trend and cycle constitute the economy's macrodynamic behaviour. Eichner uses a systems framework for integrating four distinct institutional dimensions in society - the normative, the political, the economic, and the anthropogenic. This book, by one of the leading proponents of Post-Keynesian economics, is the culmination of over 13 years of scholarly work. The author's untimely death in February 1988 prevented the final revisions of his manuscript. The book should prove an essential addition to the library of scholars and students of economics both within and outside the Post-Keynesian tradition.
expansion path in economics: Environmental Economics Dodo J. Thampapillai, Matthias Ruth, 2024-11-27 Environmental Economics explores the ways in which economic theory and its applications, as practised and taught today, must be modified to explicitly accommodate the goal of sustainability and the vital role played by environmental capital. Pivoting around the first and second laws of thermodynamics, as well as the principles of ecological resilience, this book is divided into five key parts, which include extensive coverage of environmental microeconomics and macroeconomics. It drills down into issues and challenges including consumer demand; production and supply; market organisation; renewable and non-renewable resources; environmental valuation; macroeconomic stabilisation and international trade and globalisation. Drawing on case studies from forestry, water, soil, air quality and mining, this book will equip readers with skills that enable the analyses of environmental and economic policy issues with a specific focus on the sustainability of the economy. This new edition has been updated throughout and provides further coverage on topics such as energy transition, market organisation and the role of environmental economics in regulatory decision-making including critiques of contemporary policy directives like tradable pollution permits and net zero emissions. Challenges to achieving stabilisation and emission reduction have been expanded to include wars and conflicts such as those in the Middle East and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. This book further reinforces the premise that there are clear limits to growth and that modesty and moderation are superior alternatives. Rich in pedagogical features, including key concept boxes and review questions at the end of each chapter, this book will be a vital resource for upper-level undergraduate and postgraduate students studying not only environmental economics/ecological economics but also economics in general.

expansion path in economics: The Ethics and the Economics of Minimalist Government Timothy P. Roth, 2002-01-01 . . . Roth s book is useful and valuable. Using modern secular thought as his starting point, he reaches roughly the same conclusions that one would reach reasoning from the older Christian tradition. There is certainly much to like about that effort. Paul A. Cleveland, Markets & Morality This book is one of the best discussions of welfare economics since Murray Rothbard s classic paper of 1956 Toward a Reconstruction of Utility and Welfare Economics . David Gordon, The Mises Review Timothy Roth shows that social welfare theory, as currently defended by welfare economists and policymakers, is based on a confused and untenable moral theory, is incompatible with a rights-based legal order and is bound to promote unjust and arbitrary redistributions. By advocating a return to the Kantian conception of the moral agent, Roth shows the way to a normative economics that harmonizes with both intuitive morality and the American legal and constitutional tradition. Roger Scruton, Writer and Philosopher, formerly University Professor and Professor of Philosophy at Boston University, US The moral imperative of individual autonomy, embodied in the Kantian Rawlsian perspective on social order, cannot be reconciled with the utilitarian presuppositions that inform normative applications of modern economics. This book exposes the contradictions that are present when the basic philosophical foundations are ignored, a stance that is, unfortunately, characteristic of much modern discourse as well as political practice. James M. Buchanan, George Mason University, US and a Nobel Laureate At a time when technical economics dominates the thinking of much of the profession, it is important to be reminded that economics has roots in moral philosophy. Certainly this book, which deftly explores the ethical prior commitments underlying economic analysis, succeeds in bringing philosophical issues to the forefront. But it does more. Roth s closely reasoned study provides a clear exposition of the Kantian Rawlsian approach to public policy, and thus is able to establish a convincing critique of orthodox welfare theory. In general, the book offers a valuable change of perspective on social questions. Eirik G. Furubotn, Texas A&M University, US Because it is technically flawed and morally bankrupt, the author argues, the economist s consequence-based, procedurally detached theory of the state has contributed to the growth of government. As part of the Kantian Rawlsian contractarian project, this book seeks to return economics to its foundations in moral philosophy. Given the moral equivalence of persons, the greatest possible equal participation must be promoted, persons must be impartially treated and, because it is grounded in consequentialist social welfare theory (SWT), the economist s theory of the state must be rejected. Ad hoc deployment of SWT has facilitated discriminatory rent seeking and contributed to larger government. In contrast, this book argues that equal political participation and a constitutional impartiality constraint minimize rent seeking, respect individual perceptions of the public good and underwrite the legitimacy of government. Economists, moral philosophers and political scientists will find this book a unique contribution to the literature.
