Scientific research in this area is critical to understanding leadership, training and other personnel issues, social interactions and organizational structures within the military. The U.S. Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences (ARI) asked the National Research Council to provide an agenda for basic behavioral and social research focused on applications in both the short and long-term. They are followed by two topically organized chapters, namely, the role of nonverbal behavior in interpersonal expectancies and deceptive communications. They, in turn, are followed by a process-oriented discussion of the nature of nonverbal behavior. The book concludes with two contributions concerned with the demography of nonverbal behavior: the role of gender, class, and ethnicity (with the latter viewed from a cultural perspective).
