difference between neurovascular and neurological assessment: Neurovascular Neuropsychology Joanne Festa, Ronald Lazar, 2009-06-12 Neurovascular diseases and conditions, and their associated risk factors, represent a significant cause of cognitive disability in the United States and throughout the world. In the USA alone there are 750,000 new strokes each year, representing the number one cause of disability in the country. Hypertension, found in approximately 50 million Americans, has been shown to be associated with alterations of cognitive function, even in the absence of stroke and dementia. Recent studies of neurovascular disease have now revealed that neuropsychological function may be a more sensitive measure of brain integrity than coordination, motor or sensory function and correlates will with functional outcome measures. Neurovascular Neuropsychology focuses on focal and diffuse neurovascular disease in addition to systemic conditions in which cognition and behavior have been uniquely associated with different pathologic states. With an increasing number of patients being treated by healthcare professionals, Neurovascular Neuropsychology will prove to be a strong reference to consult in regards to neuropsychological syndromes. |

difference between neurovascular and neurological assessment: Brain and Spine Surgery in the Elderly Moncef Berhouma, Pierre Krolak-Salmon, 2017-03-01 This unique and richly illustrated volume presents the state of the art in the comprehensive management of major neurosurgical diseases in the elderly (aged 65 and over). It explores all of the common neurosurgical pathologies affecting elderly patients, and emphasizes the paramount importance of tailored management strategies for quality of life. It highlights updated techniques for anaesthesia and critical care, as well as minimally invasive neurosurgical methods intended for this specific group of patients. Radiosurgery treatment is also discussed, in particular for brain tumours. In western societies, the proportion of elderly citizens has nearly reached 20%, and shows no signs of slowing down. The management of neurosurgical conditions in this particular population requires specific multidisciplinary strategies. To address this situation, a team of internationally respected contributors accurately describe degenerative and traumatic spinal diseases, which account for the majority of admissions among the elderly, as well as brain tumours and intracranial haemorrhages, aspects that are raising new ethical issues. The book mainly addresses the needs of neurosurgeons and geriatric neurologists, but also neuro-oncologists and neuro-anaesthesists working with elderly patients, as well as students in these disciplines. |

difference between neurovascular and neurological assessment: Cerebrovascular Ultrasound in Stroke Prevention and Treatment Andrei V. Alexandrov, 2008-04-15 Ultrasound enables us to monitor the cardiovascular system and brain responses to treatment in real time; a genuine blessing on the route to more effective stroke therapies, and an invaluable tool with which to tailor treatment when available evidence is meagre. Ultrasound is a vital observational tool, yet a probe needs a scientist to point it in the right direction and a skilled physician to synthesise scientific data with practical management strategies. This book, intended for clinicians who are eager to learn and prepared to observe, focusses on the examination of stroke patients, the interpretation of ultrasound studies, and the application of cerebrovascular ultrasound to management and treatment strategies. Produced by an international team of contributors and edited at the University of Texas, one of the major world centres in stroke research, it is a practical volume that can be used by beginners to learn the principles of ultrasound testing, by advanced users to learn differential diagnosis, and by clinicians (non-sonographers) who treat stroke patients. The latter will gain knowledge on how to apply ultrasound, and what to expect from it in terms of clinical decision making and treatment selection. |

difference between neurovascular and neurological assessment: Neurological Outcomes in Preterm Infants – Current Controversies and Therapies for Brain Injury Carina Mallard, Mary Tolcos, Justin Dean, 2020-02-10 Preterm birth affects over 15 million newborns worldwide each year and is the main contributor of neonatal mortality and morbidity. While neonatal survival following preterm birth continues to improve, this has not been matched by a decline in neurological outcome. There is still a high prevalence of motor problems, executive dysfunction, and cognitive impairment in infants born preterm. Improved neuroimaging has helped to describe different types of neonatal brain injuries in this population and has given a better understanding of underlying pathogenesis. However, therapies are still lacking and there is a great need to find novel strategies to improve injury and functional outcome. |

difference between neurovascular and neurological assessment: Vascular Development Derek J. Chadwick, Jamie A. Goode, 2007-08-20 The formation of blood vessels is an essential aspect of embryogenesis in vertebrates. It is a central feature of numerous post-embryonic processes, including tissue and organ growth and regeneration. It is also part of the pathology of tumour formation and certain inflammatory conditions. In recent years, comprehension of the molecular genetics of blood vessel formation has progressed enormously and studies in vertebrate model systems, especially the mouse and the zebrafish, have identified a common set of molecules and processes that are conserved throughout vertebrate embryogenesis while, in addition, highlighting aspects that may differ between different animal groups. The discovery in the past decade of the crucial role of new blood vessel formation for the development of cancers has generated great interest in angiogenesis (the formation of new blood vessels from pre-existing ones), with its major implications for potential cancer-control strategies. In addition, there are numerous situations where therapeutic treatments either require or would be assisted by vasculogenesis (the de novo formation of blood vessels). In particular, post-stroke therapies could include treatments that stimulate neovascularization of the affected tissues. The development of such treatments, however, requires thoroughly understanding the developmental properties of endothelial cells and the basic biology of blood vessel formation. While there are many books on angiogenesis, this unique book focuses on exactly this basic biology and explores blood vessel formation in connection with tissue development in a range of animal models. It includes detailed discussions of relevant cell biology, genetics and embryogenesis of blood vessel formation and presents insights into the cross-talk between developing blood vessels and other tissues. With contributions from vascular biologists, cell biologists and developmental biologists, a comprehensive and highly interdisciplinary volume is the outcome. |

Korolchuk, 2019-03-19 This volume of the subcellular Biochemistry series will attempt to bridge the gap between the subcellular events that are related to aging as they were described in the first volume of this set of two books and the reality of aging as this is seen in clinical practice. All chapters will start from the biochemistry or cell biology, where the data is available and work up towards the understanding that we have of aging in the various areas that are related to the subject. Key focus points for this volume are nutrition, external factors and genetics on aging. There will also be chapters that will focus on various organs or tissues in which aging has been well studied, like the eyes, the muscles, the immune system and the bones. The aim of the book project and the book project that is published in concert with this volume is to bring the subcellular and clinical areas into closer contact. |
