It was the inaugural effort in a program, founded by the West Texas diocese of the Episcopal Church, to educate and train former slaves and other African Americans in that city. Originally tied to St. Philip’s Church, about three miles east of the downtown center, the school grew to offer high school and then junior college courses and eventually affiliated with the San Antonio Independent School District and San Antonio College. One of the few remaining historically black junior colleges in the country, St. Philip’s, whose student body is no longer predominantly black, has also been designated a Hispanic-serving institution, one of few schools to bear both designations. Lola Orellano Norris has identified sixteen manuscript copies of de León’s meticulously kept expedition diaries. These documents hold major importance for early Texas scholarship. Some of these early manuscripts have been known to historians, but never before have all sixteen manuscripts been studied. In this interdisciplinary study, Norris transcribes, translates, and analyzes the diaries from two different perspectives. The historical analysis reveals that frequent misinterpretations of the Spanish source documents have led to substantial factual errors that have persisted in historical interpretation for more than a century. With this edition of the CEDER Yearbook, the editors wished to support student researchers as emerging scholars. Participating in research projects entails many benefits for students, including the onboarding of new teaching methods and strategies, becoming a reflective practitioner, engaging in a different model of professional learning, learning how to behave like a researcher, improving writing skills, and pursuing further degrees. Collaboration between faculty members and students (often teacher or pre-service teacher researchers) is critical (Brew, 2013; Johnson, 2000; Ries, 2018).Strickland (1988) posits that teacher researchers need to be engaged in every step of the research process and allowed to take ownership of the work. It should be thought of as helping to create lifelong researchers, for if students are properly trained, prepared, and supervised, the student-faculty collaboration can be a memorable and successful experience.
