Records of this biodiversity are, for the most part, distributed across varied and distinct natural history collections worldwide. This makes the task of extracting and mobilising the information within these collections an immense challenge.ÿÿIn this special issue of ZooKeys, 18 papers by 81 authors examine progress and prospects for mass digitising entire natural history collections. These papers provide a snapshot of activity, in what is a fast moving field that is seeing ever-increasing degrees of collaboration across disciplines and between collection-based institutions. Examples of research covered by these articles include a description to efforts digitise 30 million plant, invertebrate and vertebrate specimens at NCB Naturalis in the Netherlands; new scanning and telemicroscopy solutions to digitise the millions of pinned insect specimens held in the Australian National Insect Collection and its European and North American counterparts; citizen science projects being used to crowdsource the transcription of thousands of specimen labels and field notebooks; and new data portals providing central access to millions of biological specimens across Europe.ÿÿMany of these projects deal with the unique challenges associated with major collections that have built up over several centuries, with different communities of practices and different user communities. Despite many differences, standards for collection acquisition, preservation and documentation are broadly consistent, meaning that there is sufficient common ground to bring together the enormous amounts of data that are being exposed through mass digitisation efforts. However, a timescale is equally important because it provides a way to compare phylogeny directly with the evolution of other organisms and with planetary history such as geology, climate, extraterrestrial impacts, and other features. Chvála, 2005-12-01 This is the fourth ‘empidid’ volume of the series ‘Fauna entomologica scandinavica’, covering the Scandinavian species of what is undoubtedly the most difficult Palaearctic genus of the family Empididae, the genus Hilara Meigen, 1822. The format of the present volume is the same as in the preceding three volumes. The General part refers only briefly to the morphology of the adults, and is followed by sections on the Classification, Life history (covering feeding habits, epigamic behaviour, phenology), and a section on Zoogeography. All these sections are arranged as in the preceding empidid volumes, including the zoogeography section in which the Scandinavian species are classified into the usual six distributional groups. The main part is the systematic treatment, which also follows the arrangement of the preceding empidid volumes. The ‘Key to Fennoscandian species’ includes several additional species which do not receive a separate treatment in the following systematic part, but they are all given a clear diagnosis in the discussion of the most closely related Scandinavian species. In all, 90 species of Hilara are treated in the present volume, of which 72 have been found to occur in Denmark and Fennoscandia. These further 18 species are included, as they may well occur within the area covered by this series although they have not yet been found there. |

National museums negotiate conflicts and contradictions and entrain the community sufficiently to obtain the support of scientists and art connoisseurs, citizens and taxpayers, policy makers, domestic and foreign visitors alike. National Museums and Nation-building in Europe 1750-2010 assess the national museum as a manifestation of cultural and political desires, rather than that a straightforward representation of the historical facts of a nation. National Museums and Nation-building in Europe 1750-2010 examines the degree to which national museums have created models and representations of nations, their past, present and future, and proceeds to assess the consequences of such attempts. Revealing how different types of nations and states – former empires, monarchies, republics, pre-modern, modern or post-imperial entities – deploy and prioritise different types of museums (based on art, archaeology, culture and ethnography) in their making, this book constitutes the first comprehensive and comparative perspective on national museums in Europe and their intricate relationship to the making of nations and states. |
