dont call me after midnight math: Contemporary Michigan Poetry Michael Delp, Conrad Hilberry, Herbert Scott, 1988 As David Wagoner wrote in the earlier volume, The Third Coast, A Michigan poet may be undistinguishable from an Illinois poet or an Arizona poet (except for subject matter), but the publication of this anthology serves to underline one layer of regional cultural strength, even though these are not 'regional poets: Over a decade later, Contemporary Michigan Poetry is testimony that Michigan poetry continues to flourish. Preserving the mood and texture of Michigan in the 1980s, this new collection includes the best recent work by the state's most accomplished poets. Among the fifty-three contributors are Charles Baxter, Alice Fulton, Jim Harrison, Janet Kaufmann, Josie Kearns, Thomas Lynch, John R. Reed, and Stephen Tudor. Each of the editors is also a contributor to this sampling of poems. Styles range from understated to extravagant, from closely observed to freely imagined. dont call me after midnight math: A Knock at Midnight Brittany K. Barnett, 2020-09-08 LOS ANGELES TIMES BOOK PRIZE FINALIST • NAACP IMAGE AWARD NOMINEE • A “powerful and devastating” (The Washington Post) call to free those buried alive by America’s legal system, and an inspiring true story about unwavering belief in humanity—from a gifted young lawyer and important new voice in the movement to transform the system. “An essential book for our time . . . Brittany K. Barnett is a star.”—Van Jones, CEO of REFORM Alliance, CNN Host, and New York Times bestselling author Brittany K. Barnett was only a law student when she came across the case that would change her life forever—that of Sharanda Jones, single mother, business owner, and, like Brittany, Black daughter of the rural South. A victim of America’s devastating war on drugs, Sharanda had been torn away from her young daughter and was serving a life sentence without parole—for a first-time drug offense. In Sharanda, Brittany saw haunting echoes of her own life, as the daughter of a formerly incarcerated mother. As she studied this case, a system came into focus in which widespread racial injustice forms the core of America’s addiction to incarceration. Moved by Sharanda’s plight, Brittany set to work to gain her freedom. This had never been the plan. Bright and ambitious, Brittany was a successful accountant on her way to a high-powered future in corporate law. But Sharanda’s case opened the door to a harrowing journey through the criminal justice system. By day she moved billion-dollar deals, and by night she worked pro bono to free clients in near hopeless legal battles. Ultimately, her path transformed her understanding of injustice in the courts, of genius languishing behind bars, and the very definition of freedom itself. Brittany’s riveting memoir is at once a coming-of-age story and a powerful evocation of what it takes to bring hope and justice to a system built to resist them both. NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY KIRKUS REVIEWS |

dont call me after midnight math: You Don't Have to Go There Raymond Tapp, 2022-11-03 Book I of IV This book is about a man's everyday life in prison (that man being me). To me, my life in prison was about bettering myself by staying positive in all that I did. You asked, Raymond what did you do for five year? (while incarcerated). Well, I read, I wrote, I went to school, and I went to almost every church service I could. I became a chapel aide at the last two prisons where I was incarcerated. As you will find as you begin to read this book, I also took care of my physical body by working out, doing push- ups, crunches, working out at the weight pile and of course doing a lot of walking! Anything I could do to better myself physically and mentally I did. I wrote a lot of poetry, along with writing this book journal that you are about to read. I 'm sure you will feel emotional, sad, and even smiling at times. I was always truthful and I prayed a lot. I'm sure you will be blessed and at times excited as you read about a man's everyday life in prison. I suggest you read slowly and visualize what a man goes through in everyday life in prison. It was God and His presence that seen me through a five- years incarceration. May you be blessed Sincerely Ray Tapp 2018 |
dont call me after midnight math: Nocturnals Bradford Morrow, 2019-08-20 This spring 2019 edition of Bard College’s literary journal explores the fascination and mystery of night through stories, poems, essays, and memoirs. Scheherazade famously spun stories for a thousand and one nights in order to sustain her life. In recognition of how vital it is to voice our own stories, the stellar works collected here—including entries by Sallie Tisdale, Rick Moody, Joyce Carol Oates, and many others—address our myriad experiences from dusk to daybreak. In this volume, readers will encounter the monster of Kowloon, which relies on the imaginations of children in order to exist. Three men embark on a hallucinatory journey into the snowy pitch-dark night of the soul. Purgatory can be found here, along with ghosts, alternative universes, an East Village bar that doubles as a portal to another life, and a personal chronicle of a visit to Burning Man in Black Rock Desert. Also included are the nightbird Nycticorax, musical nocturnes, night thoughts at solstice, wheeling galaxies, and the cosmos itself. The pioneering nocturnal photography of George Shiras is celebrated in these pages, and the dichotomous world of night versus day in equatorial Uganda is observed by an ethnographic eye. |

dont call me after midnight math: The Greatest Love Story Never Told Richard Orion, 2015-10-30 This story is based on a true love story that spanned almost two decades. The names and places have been changed to protect the privacy of the individuals involved in this affair. The chronological sequence of events has been maintained for continuity. All the stories and experiences are based on facts. This book is about a love story that was kept secret for 18 years and perhaps shouldve remained a secret. The first book related to this love story was a book of poems entitled Somewhere, Sometime, Somehow: Love Poems and Short Stories published in 2008 by this author and Xlibris. For the perceptive reader of this book one can trace the ups and downs of our love relationship. These 18 years were filled with robust love and passion for each other. Perhaps it was fantasy; perhaps it was the most real thing we will ever experience. The heartbreaking part of this love affair is that I am not really sure my lover ever really understood or appreciated my profound and unconditional love for her. I opened my heart to her through poetry and thoughtful letters, but she rarely showed me what was in her heart. Perhaps it was a one-sided love affair, but I surely think and hope not. I was convinced that she truly loved me through her words and actions. At least I experienced a pure love that I had only dreamed was possible. The story is told mainly through the exchange of letters and emails to each other. Perhaps readers can experience and hopefully feel the deep love we felt for each other. |

dont call me after midnight math: Hella David Gerrold, 2021-07-20 A master of science fiction introduces a world where everything is large and the problems of survival even larger in this exciting new novel. Hella is a planet where everything is oversized—especially the ambitions of the colonists. The trees are mile-high, the dinosaur herds are huge, and the weather is extreme—so extreme, the colonists have to migrate twice a year to escape the blistering heat of summer and the atmosphere-freezing cold of winter. Kyle is a neuro-atypical young man, emotionally challenged, but with an implant that gives him real-time access to the colony's computer network, making him a very misunderstood savant. When an overburdened starship arrives, he becomes the link between the established colonists and the refugees from a ravaged Earth. The Hella colony is barely self-sufficient. Can it stand the strain of a thousand new arrivals, bringing with them the same kinds of problems they thought they were fleeing? Despite the dangers to himself and his family, Kyle is in the middle of everything—in possession of the most dangerous secret of all. Will he be caught in a growing political conspiracy? Will his reawakened emotions overwhelm his rationality? Or will he be able to use his unique ability to prevent disaster? |

dont call me after midnight math: Tales from Kentucky One-Room School Teachers William Lynwood Montell, 2011-02-18 In an educational era defined by large school campuses and overcrowded classrooms, it is easy to overlook the era of one-room schools, when teachers filled every role, including janitor, and provided a familylike atmosphere in which children also learned from one another. In Tales from Kentucky One-Room School Teachers, William Lynwood Montell reclaims an important part of Kentucky's social, cultural, and educational heritage, assembling a fun and fascinating collection of schoolroom stories that chronicle a golden era in Kentucky. The firsthand narratives and anecdotes in this collection cover topics such as teacher-student relationships, day-to-day activities, lunchtime foods, students' personal relationships, and, of course, the challenges of teaching in a one-room school. Montell includes tales about fund-raising pie suppers, pranks, outrageous student behavior (such as the quiet little boy whose first sharing involved profanity), and variety of other topics. Montell even includes some of his own memories from his days as a pupil in a one-room school. Tales from Kentucky One-Room School Teachers is a delightful glimpse of the history of education. |
dont call me after midnight math: The Front of the House Dillon Wilson, 2014-12-08 I was first inspired to write this book after reading some of Anthony Bourdains books, particularly Kitchen Confidential. I decided that I could write a story about the underbelly of the world of fine dining from my own perspective as a dining room manager, sommelier, and service professional. It is an autobiographic account of my own experiences, starting with when I was a teenager in high school and then detailing my first encounters in the workplace. Through trial and error, I find my true calling as a restaurateur. It is an odyssey, which describes in my own words the internal and external factors that shaped my career in the food and beverage industry. It covers four decades. During that time, there are subplots involving my friends and acquaintances, which revolve around the main theme of this book. Many social, political, and technological changes occurred, which had a direct and indirect impact on the course of this story and its ultimate conclusion. This book appeals to its readers on four different levels. It is a historical portrayal of how fashion, art, and music changed through the sixties, seventies, eighties, nineties, and into the next century. It also describes some of our nations most memorable events and tragedies as they relate to this book. It identifies with anyone who has ever held a job in the service industry or has ever wondered what it was really like. It has its share of romance and work politics, just like most jobs do. It is an informative guide for anyone interested in gastronomy and the world of eclectic beverages, in addition to exploring the wonders of the wine country from the perspective of a sommelier and service professional. Lastly, it has a moral element. It is a warning to all of the potential dangers and pitfalls of a demanding, high-pressure lifestyle surrounded by temptation, risk, and vulnerability. It is not for people with thin skins or inherent weaknesses. I have tried my best to combine all the things, which makes a book truly engaging as well as entertaining. There is humor, irony, fate, and hopefully, some valuable information for everyone to enjoy. Most of all, its a good story! |
dont call me after midnight math: Spy , 1995-03 Smart. Funny. Fearless. It's pretty safe to say that Spy was the most influential magazine of the 1980s. It might have remade New York's cultural landscape; it definitely changed the whole tone of magazine journalism. It was cruel, brilliant, beautifully written and perfectly designed, and feared by all. There's no magazine I know of that's so continually referenced, held up as a benchmark, and whose demise is so lamented --Dave Eggers. It's a piece of garbage --Donald Trump. |
