dotted line in er diagram: Advanced Information Systems Engineering Anne Persson, Janis Stirna, 2004-05-25 th CAiSE 2004 was the 16 in the series of International Conferences on Advanced Information Systems Engineering. In the year 2004 the conference was hosted by the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, Riga Technical University, Latvia. Since the late 1980s, the CAiSE conferences have provided a forum for the presentation and exchange of research results and practical experiences within the ?eld of Information Systems Engineering. The conference theme of CAiSE 2004 was Knowledge and Model Driven Information Systems Engineering for Networked Organizations. Modern businesses and IT systems are facing an ever more complex en- ronment characterized by openness, variety, and change. Organizations are - coming less self-su?cient and increasingly dependent on business partners and other actors. These trends call for openness of business as well as IT systems, i.e. the ability to connect and interoperate with other systems. Furthermore, organizations are experiencing ever more variety in their business, in all c- ceivable dimensions. The di?erent competencies required by the workforce are multiplying. In the same way, the variety in technology is overwhelming with a multitude of languages, platforms, devices, standards, and products. Moreover, organizations need to manage an environment that is constantly changing and where lead times, product life cycles, and partner relationships are shortening. ThedemandofhavingtoconstantlyadaptITtochangingtechnologiesandbu- ness practices has resulted in the birth of new ideas which may have a profound impact on the information systems engineering practices in future years, such as autonomic computing, component and services marketplaces and dynamically generated software. |

But Practice without Theory has no sense, as Leonardo said five centuries ago. In this Conference we try a comprornise between these two complementary aspects. A total of 5 sessions are application-oriented, ranging from classical applications to more unusual ones in Software Engineering. Recent research aspects in Databases, such as activity, deductivity and/or Object Orientation are also present in DEXA 92, as weIl as the implication of the new data models such as OO-Model, Deductive Model, etc .. included in the Modelling sessions. Other areas of interest, such as Hyper-Text and Multimedia application, together with the classical field of Information Retrieval are also considered. FinaIly, Implementation Apects are reflected in very concrete fields. A total of of nearly 200 papers submitted from all over the world were sent to DEXA 92. Only 90 could be accepted. A Poster session has also been establishcd. DEXA 90 was held in Vienna, Austria; DEXA 91 in Berlin, Germany; and DEXA 92 will take place in Valencia, Spain, where we are celebrating the discovery of thc New World just five centurics ago, in Leonardo's age. Both the quality of the Conference and the compromise between Practice and Thcory are duc to the credit of all the DEXA 92 authors. |

dotted line in er diagram: Nano-Structures for Optics and Photonics Baldassare Di Bartolo, John Collins, Luciano Silvestri, 2014-10-06 The contributions in this volume were presented at a NATO Advanced Study Institute held in Erice, Italy, 4-19 July 2013. Many aspects of important research into nanophotonics, plasmonics, semiconductor materials and devices, instrumentation for bio sensing to name just a few, are covered in depth in this volume. The growing connection between optics and electronics, due to the increasing important role plaid by semiconductor materials and devices, find their expression in the term photonics, which also reflects the importance of the photon aspect of light in the description of the performance of several optical systems. Nano-structures have unique capabilities that allow the enhanced performance of processes of interest in optical and photonic devices. In particular these structures permit the nanoscale manipulation of photons, electrons and atoms; they represent a very hot topic of research and are relevant to many devices and applications. The various subjects bridge over the disciplines of physics, biology and chemistry, making this volume of interest to people working in these fields. The emphasis is on the principles behind each technique and on examining the full potential of each technique. |
dotted line in er diagram: Spatial Tessellations Atsuyuki Okabe, Barry Boots, Kokichi Sugihara, Sung Nok Chiu, 2009-09-25 Spatial data analysis is a fast growing area and Voronoi diagrams provide a means of naturally partitioning space into subregions to facilitate spatial data manipulation, modelling of spatial structures, pattern recognition and locational optimization. With such versatility, the Voronoi diagram and its relative, the Delaunay triangulation, provide valuable tools for the analysis of spatial data. This is a rapidly growing research area and in this fully updated second edition the authors provide an up-to-date and comprehensive unification of all the previous literature on the subject of Voronoi diagrams. Features: * Expands on the highly acclaimed first edition * Provides an up-to-date and comprehensive survey of the existing literature on Voronoi diagrams * Includes a useful compendium of applications * Contains an extensive bibliography A wide range of applications is discussed, enabling this book to serve as an important reference volume on this topic. The text will appeal to students and researchers studying spatial data in a number of areas, in particular, applied probability, computational geometry, and Geographic Information Science (GIS). This book will appeal equally to those whose interests in Voronoi diagrams are theoretical, practical or both. |

dotted line in er diagram: Power Systems Stability Handbook Anthony J. Pansini, 1992 The increased use of power lines to interconnect multiple generating sources has lead to increased concern for preventing vulnerability to stability problems, in which failure of a single line can ultimately lead to the unanticipated blackout of an entire area served by a particular grid. Under deregulation, transmission lines become the weak link in the supply chain, and their vulnerability to stability problems assumes greater importance. This comprehensive reference will guide you through every aspect of improving the reliability and stability of electric transmission systems, so that the likelihood of such failures can be significantly reduced. You'll find coverage of hard-to-find information, such as the effect of high-speed breakers on stability, how to calculate unbalanced faults, multi-machine stability, and power factor control. |
