dr larkin pain management: Pain Management Magdalena Anitescu, 2018-05-01 Pain Management: A Problem-Based Learning Approach provides a comprehensive review of the dynamic and ever-changing field of pain medicine. Its problem-based format incorporates a vast pool of practical, ABA board-exam-style multiple-choice questions for self-assessment. Each its 46 case-based chapters is accompanied by 20 questions and answers, accessible online in a full practice exam. The cases presented are also unique, as each chapter starts with a case description, usually a compilation of several actual cases; it then branches out through case-based questions, to increasingly complex situations. This structure is designed to create an authentic experience that mirrors that of an oral board examination. The discussion sections that follow offer a comprehensive approach to the chapter's subject matter, thus creating a modern, complete, and up-to-date medical review of that topic. This book is equally a solid reference compendium of pain management topics and a comprehensive review to assist the general practitioner both in day-to-day practice and during preparation for certification exams. Its problem-based format makes it an ideal resource for the lifelong learner and the modern realities of education.
dr larkin pain management: Pain Management in Rehabilitation Dr. Martin Grabois, MD, Dr. Trilok Monga, MD, 2002-09-01 Pain is a common symptom of many diseases and is often referred for a physical medicine and rehabilitation consultation. Despite the availability of information on the pathophysiology, assessment, and management of acute musculoskeletal pain, chronic pain still remains an unsolved problem for many patients. Pathophysiology in these patients often remains obscure, assessment difficult, and management frustrating. These issues become magnified when pain, acute or chronic, complicates a primary disabling disease such as spinal cord injury, cerebrovascular accident or multiple sclerosis. To date, the physiatric management of these complex syndromes has not been dealt with in a comprehensive fashion, especially with regard to the relationship of pain, functional status, and quality of life in these patients. Pain Management in Rehabilitation provides a single source that synthesizes information about the diagnosis and management of various pain syndromes in patients with primary disabling diseases. It discusses pain as it relates to various disease processes from the perspective of both rehabilitation specialists and primary care providers. It describes pain syndromes, their assessment and management, in some of the most common impairments seen in a rehabilitation setting. Relevant literature is reviewed, with emphasis on assessment and physiatric management. This valuable text is an unparalleled guide to the successful management of pain in persons with a primary disabling disease, with the goal of preventing physiological and functional decline and the improvement of functional abilities, which in turn lead to enhanced psychosocial functioning and quality of life.
dr larkin pain management: The Healthy Back Book Astrid Pujari, Nancy Schatz Alton, 2010 Eight out of ten Americans will suffer from back pain at least once in their lifetime: It's the second most common reason why people book a doctor appointment. Pujari and Alton offer a whole-body approach to healing, sharing information and tips from medical specialists, physical therapists, yoga and fitness instructors, and herbalists. The Healthy Back Book offers varied and simple solutions for active individuals.

Hung, 2018-12-28 This text provides a comprehensive review and expertise on various interventional cancer pain procedures. The first part of the text addresses the lack of consistency seen in the literature regarding interventional treatment options for specific cancer pain syndromes. The implementation of paradigms that can be used in treating specific groups of cancer such as breast cancer, follows. The remainder of the text delves into a more common approach to addressing interventional cancer pain medicine. After discussing interventional options that are commonly employed by physicians, the text investigates how surgeons may address some of the more severe pain syndromes, and covers the most important interventional available for our patients, intrathecal drug delivery. Chapters also cover radiologic options in targeted neurolysis and ablative techniques, specifically for bone metastasis, rehabilitation to address patients’ quality of life and function, and integrative and psychological therapies.   dr larkin pain management: Relieving Pain in America Institute of Medicine, Board on Health Sciences Policy, Committee on Advancing Pain Research, Care, and Education, 2011-10-26 Chronic pain costs the nation up to $635 billion each year in medical treatment and lost productivity. The 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act required the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to enlist the Institute of Medicine (IOM) in examining pain as a public health problem. In this report, the IOM offers a blueprint for action in transforming prevention, care, education, and research, with the goal of providing relief for people with pain in America. To reach the vast multitude of people with various types of pain, the nation must adopt a population-level prevention and management strategy. The IOM recommends that HHS develop a comprehensive plan with specific goals, actions, and timeframes. Better data are needed to help shape efforts, especially on the groups of people currently underdiagnosed and undertreated, and the IOM encourages federal and state agencies and private organizations to accelerate the collection of data on pain incidence, prevalence, and treatments. Because pain varies from patient to patient, healthcare providers should increasingly aim at tailoring pain care to each person's experience, and self-management of pain should be promoted. In addition, because there are major gaps in knowledge about pain across health care and society alike, the IOM recommends that federal agencies and other stakeholders redesign education programs to bridge these gaps. Pain is a major driver for visits to physicians, a major reason for taking medications, a major cause of disability, and a key factor in quality of life and productivity. Given the burden of pain in human lives, dollars, and social consequences, relieving pain should be a national priority.

dr larkin pain management: Pain Medicine Salim M. Hayek, Binit J. Shah, Mehul J. Desai, Thomas C. Chelimsky, 2015 Pain Medicine approaches the management of common chronic pain conditions using a unique interdisciplinary approach focusing on multiple facets of patients' clinical presentations. The comprehensive discussions in each chapter are centered on a vignette that mimics a fairly typical case presentation. In addition to detailed classical descriptions of the epidemiology, pathophysiology, prognosis, and confounding psychosocial factors of each disease entity, the text provides various interdisciplinary management approaches. The case-based approach illustrates key clinical points and demonstrates how practitioners from a variety of disciplines can work together to deliver optimal patient care. The ACGME criteria for fellowship training in Pain Medicine calls for an interdisciplinary approach, with required training and exposure to the fields of Anesthesiology, Neurology, Psychiatry, and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. As this trend is occurring in private pain clinics and practices as well as in academic institutions, there is a need for a volume which integrates the approaches of the various disciplines into a coherent whole to guide clinicians and trainees in the interdisciplinary management of pain. With each chapter authored by respected experts in the key specialties involved with pain management, Pain Medicine is a highly applicable clinical reference for practitioners, an excellent anchor text for fellows and residents in training, and a thorough review for initial board certification as well as maintenance of certification exams.

dr larkin pain management: Evidence-Based Interventional Pain Medicine Jan Van Zundert, Jacob Patijn, Craig Hartrick, Arno Lataster, Frank Huygen, Nagy Mekhail, Maarten van Kleef, 2011-10-19 Unrelieved chronic pain is a worldwide epidemic Chronic pain has been subject to multiple international initiatives through the World Health Organization. Interventional Pain Medicine, the use of minimally invasive techniques to relieve pain, is the best approach when simpler measures such as physical therapy or medications fail. However, these procedures can be associated with significant risk and expense. Establishing uniformity in diagnostic criteria and procedural performance can reduce both morbidity and unnecessary procedures, and hence healthcare expenditures. While other texts explain how to perform these procedures, little focus has been given to diagnostic considerations: if and when these procedures should be performed. Evidence-Based Interventional Pain Medicine focuses on a balance between effectiveness and safety of interventional management for specific diagnoses, across all areas of chronic pain including: Head, neck and shoulder pain Lower back pain Neuropathic pain syndromes Complex Regional Pain Syndrome Pain in patients with cancer Vascular and visceral pain Evidence-Based Interventional Pain Medicine provides essential knowledge for anyone who uses, or intends to use, interventional pain techniques.
